I have a hungry husband, too, and we both grew up on farms! My suggestion is googling "Baking Powder Biscuits". They are awesome! They are very light, flakey and buttery - at least my mom's were!
Did he mean Bisquick Biscuits? Very easy and yummy. Show him the box of Bisquick. On the side or back it has the recipe and usually a photo. My kids also love them! Also good to make and use for strawberry shortcake. YUM
My husband does at least 90% of the cooking and baking for our family. He will make homemade bread twice a week. On Sundays, we have what we call a German breakfast (he'a from Germany) it's not your typical American breakfast food. He will take the home made bread, from scratch recipe, and make them into individual balls, instead of a loaf. We like it much more than store bought bread and it doesn't have preservatives in it. It's made with part wheat flour and part bread flour, yeast and water. That's it! You do have to let it rise before baking it. You don't have to use wheat, it's just healthier and contains more fiber. Soetimes he uses rye instead which is just as good.
OK--quick and dirty not made from scratch but still taste like great biscuits: in the refrigerator section at grocery store buy the Grands Biscuits and follow package directions. Even better buy Bisquick mix (in the cereal aisle with pancake mixes) and follow package directions.
These make more like a bun rather than biscuit but are more homemade tasting: take 1 loaf of frozen bread dough and let unthaw until able to slice. Slice into circles (like you'd slice french bread)--you should probably get 8-12 or so depending on how thick you slice the dough. Lay the circle slices about 6 to a greased cookie sheet to rise. When they've risen to about double their size (might take as long as an hour or more and you should cover them with plastic wrap or a moist towel to prevent drying out) bake in a 350 oven for 15-20 minutes and brush with butter when they come out of the oven.
Hope this helps!
Try buying a box of Bisquick. I think the recipe is on the box.
In this day and age, especially if you have a child, I would tell him to consider himself lucky if you find the time to throw some Pillsbury Biscuits in the oven!
If his mom's around, call her.
I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for but I found this on cooks.com
BISCUIT BREAD
2 c. self rising flour
1 c. milk
1/3 c. vegetable oil
Combine all ingredients and mix well. Pour batter into a hot well greased cast iron skillet. Bake at 400 degrees for 18 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. 8 to 10 servings.
Would that be the same as dinner rolls? I think so. Unless you like to bake (and bread is tough!) try out the Rhodes brand of frozen bread dough. You have to still do the work of letting it rise and bake, but they do the hard part. They make bread and dinner rolls. The wheat are delish.
I don't make bread biscuits. but I love baking powder biscuits. I use the recipe from betty crocker. I can send it if you want it. it is oil, flour, salt, baking powder and milk. We love them. they raise in the oven and are nice and flaky. good luck
Can you ask him what's in it or talk to his relatives? Maybe someone has the receipe?
I did a google search for bread biscuts and found a thing called monkey bread and calls for cinnamon and sugar.
Try cooks.com or a google search.
Here's a recipe I found online for you:
I know it doesn't say to pull or cut into pieces to roll, but I would bet you could. After you roll it out, just cut (or pull) into small pieces (1-2 inches) roll into balls and place on a cookie sheet and bake. I don't know how long you'd want to bake them, I think you'd just have to watch them and when they are golden brown they're done. Time frame for below might be good to use also.
SPOONBREAD BISCUITS
2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
4 tsp. baking powder
1 tbsp. sugar
3/4 tsp. salt
1/4 c. shortening
Approximately 3/4 c. milk
Sift dry ingredients together, then cut in shortening. Slowly add milk until mixture is wet enough to hold together. Turn onto a floured board. Roll to 1/2 inch thickness. Bake in preheated 450 degree oven for 10-12 minutes.
GOOD ???..Never heard of them...(I'm a city girl too)
I assume you know what an ordinary biscuit is since they are available at McDonalds or IHOP for breakfast or at KFC, and I assume that you know you can make them from scratch, buy them in a tube, or use Bisquick. I am a farm girl raised on down-home farm meals and I wonder if your husband might be talking about what we call "fried bread"? For fried bread, you use homemade or frozen bread dough that is thawed, shape it in biscuit-sized rounds, and fry them in a greased skillet (cast iron works best)until both sides are browned. Serve them hot with butter and jelly or butter and honey. Ask your hubby if that sounds like what his grandma made.
I'd go to www.foodnetwork.com and pick any of Paula Dean's biscuit recipies, she's from the south so you KNOW she makes a good biscuit!! :)
I love reading through the answers here... I don't think anyone actually makes things from scratch anymore..lol.
I agree that you should talk to someone in his family. Someone probably started calling them bread biscuts in the family and it stuck... Tell him if he finds the recipe, you will be more then willing to make it for him.
Monkey bread is good. You use canned biscuts and cut each one into forths. Roll it in melted butter and then a cinnamon and sugar mixture. Stack them in a Bunt cake pan... although if you don't have one, a bread pan would work ok. I always mix the left over butter with the sugar and cinnamon mixture then put that on top. You bake it at what the can says but for about 15 or 20 minutes... until you can pull apart the biscuts and have it done through.
As far as I know Bread Biscuits are just homemade bread made into small (biscuit) form. Here's an easy recipe to try:
(Start anytime in the morning before 11:00 and they'll be ready by dinner time.)
3 cups flour
1 tsp. salt
2 Tbl. sugar
2 tsp. yeast
1 1/2 Tbl. butter
3/4 cup milk
1 cup warm tap water
Get in there with your hands and mix everything together. You may need to keep adding flour to get it to a point where it's not too wet and sticky.
Cover in a glass bowl (if you have one) to rise for 3-4 hrs.
Grease a cokie sheet.
Roll dough into walnut size balls, place on cookie sheet.
Let rise for about 2 hrs. covered either in a towel or a piece of plastic wrap sprayed with cooking spray.
Bake about 30 min at 350.
I'm a city girl too so if I can make this so can you! =) Good luck and feel free to email me with any questions!
