So What Happened?

I had 42 responses to this question. This is the best thing ever! Shanda was actually on her way to the doctor when I called her and gave her about 3 ideas that I learned her. She talked to the doctor and he was in total agreement with the Mylicon drops. If they don't work, we'll try the other ideas. Thank you all so much!

When my daughter was taking formula Similac seemed to upset her tummy terribly! I dont know what it is about it but several of my friends said the same thing. We switched her to WalMarts brand Parents Choice and never had any other problems. Good Luck.

We switched my grandaughter to Similac Gentlease which is milk based but lactose free. It states "for babies with gassiness or fussiness" Found usually at WalMart and Target. There is also a product which helps, I think it's called Gas Ease or something in the infant aisle specifically for gas symptoms. Good Luck to you, I know it's so sad to hear them cry in pain.

Make sure you stop in mid-stream so to speak while feeding him and burp him more than once while feeding, and since he is on milk instead of breast milk it can't be what she is eating. She may also try massaging his tummy.

He may not be able to handle lactose. There is another formula called Nutrangimen (think it's made by simalac) It's for babies that have gas/digestive problems. It's kind of a last resort if they cannot handle soy. But as always check with the Dr first

My son had similary problems and we discovered he had an inguinal hernia. The doctors said that it shouldn't cause him pain, but after the surgery (outpatient) it was like we had a different baby. The hernia appears around the groin area and will bulge (be visible) when he is crying or straining. My husband noticed it when changing a diaper.
Also, if that ends up being the cause, request that the surgeon check the other side for a hernia b/c often it will exist on the other side too, but not yet be visible. This could save lots in medical expenses from a second procedure.

The other thing I swear by is Little Tummies. Best stuff ever!

I would definitely take dairy (specifically milk) out of the baby's mother's diet. That helped my baby right away. I also give him Gentlease Enfimil formula (we are doing both breastmilk and formula right now) which is made for gassy babies. I hope this helps!

Too bad your not stll nursing...thats ofcourse the best. I breastfeed but had to supplement a few weeks in the beginning. Soy made my baby very gassy. We switched to goat milk. It is easier to digest.
Often though, just sticking it out until your baby matures is all thats needed. My little guy is 5 months and everything is better and they are so fun.
They sell goat milk at Walmart,Kroger and Albertsons. They also have powder form at the Vitmans plus, its cheaper than a fresh pint. (3.49)
Good luck...

Fennel tea. We used a french press (like for coffee); put 2 teaspoons dried fennel seed (from the spice section at the supermarket) into a mortar and pestle, and grind them up a little bit (you could also put the seeds in a cheesecloth or ziplock and wack them with a hammer a few times). Then combine the 2 tsps seeds with 2 cups boiling water and let steep 20 minutes, then use the little plunger on the french press (you could also just use a pot and strainer). For the baby, make sure it's cooled to lukewarm, then dilute 50% water/50% tea in a bottle. Give him an ounce or two at a time. The fennel is obviously totally safe and natural (I actually grow my own, organically, in the yard), and it will relax the little one just enough to let the gas out--a few minutes after he drinks the tea, you may want to clear the room (LOL!). But it worked great for our DD. It works for adults, too--follow the same recipe above, just don't dilute with water. You can also make fennel babyfood once he gets older, if he continues to have trouble. GL!

My little guy (almost 4 months now) had the same issues. We used Little Tummys drops for gas and they are FANTASTIC! It's the same stuff as Mylicon. You can get it at any pharmacy, Wal Mart, etc. With my son, I gave him the recommended dosage and it worked almost instantly. You might want to just check with the pediatrician to make sure it's OK to give him, but mine said it was no problem.

I started out supplementing while nursing with Similac Advanced but I switched my baby to similac sensitive at that age because she had gas problems too and it helped a lot. Also try putting a warm dish towel over his belly, you can iron it to get it warm. Also a warm bath might help; the heat helps relax the digestive system so he can pass the gas.

My baby girl was just a few days old, I was breast-feeding and evidently ate something that gave her terrible colic. I called a health food store who suggested CATNIP. My hubby went got it and made catnip tea as directed by the owner. It was incredible how quickly it worked! Would you believe that was 20 yrs ago and I still have the little bottle with the left over catnip? Ha! Anyway - I did the research and it actually comes in teabags now and here are the instructions for a new baby w/colic (from someone else's testimony): "The clerk in the store sold us tea bags which she told us to steep in a cup of hot water for two to three min. and dilute by half with cool water. We fed the baby 2 oz. of this tea..." It's natural and non-toxic - much better than something OTC, etc. I HIGHLY recommend it! D..... p.s. I just checked out all of your other responses - doesn't look like anyone is familiar with catnip - It really DOES work - I encourage you to do your own research before resorting to the OTC remedies... I just read this, also... "It soothes the nervous system and can safely help get a restless child off to sleep." That's another plus! Please let me know if you try it and the results! Good luck!

Foirst off make sure that its not Similac with iron- unless your doctor says he has to have it- stick with reg formula - the iron contipates and gives gas from what I have seen. There are drops- I cant for the life of me remember the name- Simethicone- they are gas relieveing drops- check with the Pharmacy- I used them for my baby again ck with peditrician but- harmless and I used them.
Also when burping- try working/massaging up the entire spine while the baby is in sitting position- worked like a charm for 3 generations in my family. Have no idea why but..

I don't have any ideas on the formula...but something she may want to try giving him is Gripe Water. It is a natural soothing agent for tummies! You can find it at most nutrition stores...Vitamin Shoppe or any health store. I used it with my son and it worked great. When they are little, you don't need too much. Also may want to give him just a little (maybe 1/4 of a bottle) of chamomile tea. Don't let it interfere with his formula, but that will help calm him down as well.

Best wishes!

I had the same problem with my baby when he was a month old. I had to go to similac sensitive infant formula. It is made for fussiness and gas. It helped a lot. I also had to use gas relief drops. The only thing is the formula is $26.00 a can. I also, started using playtex bottles with the drop-ins. You can push all the air out of them and the nipple is the most like the breast. My baby is now 6 months old and I started using Parent's Choice Gentle formula. I have not had ny problems with gas with it. It is cheaper. It is about $14.00. I hope I helped. Good Luck with the new nephew!!

I have two kids and both had that trouble and they are both allergic to dairy. DON"T give him soy. 50% of kids that are allergic to dairy are also allergic to soy. soy is also terrible for boys. THey don't need that much estrogen. I nursed both of my kids for the first year and I had to take all dairy out of my diet and that changed everything for them. They were no longer fussy babies and they slept and were happy. Some dr's will not give you an exact answer on this, but hey, it works.

All these mommies definitely know what they're talking about! Mylicon (also called Simethacone) is great for gas. I put it in every one of my now 3 year old's bottles and fed him Similac Isomil.

One MAJOR money saving piece of advice...get the Simethacone at Costco. At regular retail, "Mylicon" can be $7/bottle. At Costco, go to the prescription counter and ask for "Simethacone". It's less than $3/bottle there. I would buy every bottle they had every time I went. It's exactly the same as Mylicon, even the same flavor, but obviously if your nephew needs it for a while, Simethacone is a big cost savings.

Also, Dr. Brown's bottles made a big difference for my kids.

Good luck to your family. I hope your nephew is feeling better soon!

They have baby gas drops you can put into their bottle. They are very gentle. My daughter's husband used the wrong syringe and administered the wrong dosage... so we called the poison control hotline and they said that he could have given the newborn the entire bottle and it wouldn't have hurt them any. It really helped a lot to put several drops in the bottle of formula at each feeding.

One other home remedy I had heard about years ago was to boil onions (I know sounds horrible), but then you strain the onions and give the onion water to the baby. It's a natural sedative to help them get through the pain until they pass gas. You can add a little karo to the water for taste. Good luck with your sweet little nephew.

It sounds like you have already received a lot of great advice. I just went through 'gas' issues this past year, so I couldn't pass up an opportunity to share. Sometimes doctors will just tell you the baby has colic and just to wait it out. I truly beleive that colic is a result of an immature digestive system. Our baby started screaming non-stop at 5-6 weeks. The doctor can actually do a simple test with a stool sample to see if the baby has milk allergies. We did and were placed on Elecare and prilosec for acid reflux. Elecare is very expensive and has to be specially ordered. But... we say a new baby in just one day. His stool sample came back negative. The colic did improve after month 3-4. We are still on Elecare at 8 months, but the doctor is planning on trying us back on Almentium next month since most babies grow out of milk allergies. The only other tip I would give is to provide your niece with a break away from the baby. I ended up with post partum and insomnia. My husband and family provided me daily breaks while we were going through the tough times. Our baby is the happiest baby now. Good luck to you.

When i saw this I has to respond right away. Ask her if either side of the family is lactose intolerant. Jaeden was the gas was from mild allery which is common and the child usually grows out of by the first or second year. My son is still Lactose intolerant. So if I give him cheese I give him acedopholis first. The greatest formula ever invented is Nutramigen it is expensive and it works and it works in a day or two and you have one happy non gassy or colicky baby. Get the liquid premixed and instant happy mommy. Also the other all natural thing I got from my husbands mother (very eurpoean) in Rose water. Its real water made from Roses I put it in Jaedens bottle and that was a miracle too.

It's not clear if the baby is still breastfed, if so eliminate dairy and citrus for a start and see if that helps. Also, get some chamomile tea. I make it in a mug in the microwave (heat water) then place in 1-2 tea bags let steep for 3 minutes covered, add a little sugar enough to make it slightly sweet and serve warm arounf 2-3 ounces at a time. You may adjust the amount as needed and as the baby gets older. This help with the cramps and gas like you would not believe! My grandma showed me this 18 years ago and I've used it with all five of my girls and it works every time!

If the mother is consuming dairy, that is usually the biggest culprit for gassiness in babies. Also, if the baby is reacting to that in the mother's milk, likely any of the cow milk based formulas will bother him. Soy is also highly allergenic and causes gasiness in my two sons (that are now teens!). So, her best bet may be one of the more expensive "pre-digested" sort of formulas or try to breastfeed again and watch her diet. La Leche League (www.llli.org to find a local support group) can help her with starting to BF again - for kids that are sensitive to foods like this, this is almost always the best and healthiest long term option - research shows that for kids that are destined for allergies, that BF really, really helps and likely is preventitive for asthma.
