Boys and Talking ... When Did Yours Start?

I'm not the least bit worried, but curious about others experiences...

I have a 16 month old son who is very alert, and developing quite nicely. He has two older sisters (both under 5 with wonderful vocabularies). He has not begun to really speak actual words (ball, cat, car etc.) yet.

It is NOT a case of his sisters talking for him, or having them anticipate his needs so he doesn't need to speak. I know that can pose a problem for younger bothers and sisters alike. They know not to do this, and we have always been very conscientious of their interaction with their brother to avoid that problem.

Mine says things like Mama, Dada, Ba, Wow, Ah, Ga and a lovely combination of them to communicate what he needs very well. I understand what he wants even without the words, and I ask him outright. I even tell him what I'm doing, explain situations and things... he is surrounded by interactive speech.

When did your little guys start talking?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'm loving hearing others experiences. I can't emphasize enough that I am NOT worried about his development. I just love sharing experiences with other moms, and hearing about everythihg you go through with your own little ones.

We have started to use sign language with our little guy. It's wonderful seeing how well they can communicate without words.

Keep the stories coming ...

Hi,
I just wanted to let you know that you can't compare girls to boys. Boys are slower than girls unfortunately. But it sounds like he is doing fine. His speech sounds right about right for his age. Both of my boys started talking fluently at about 20 mths. old. I hope this helps.

I have son who didn't talk until 2.5. I had a hearing test done to rule out any ear issues, he passed. He started getting Early Intervention (we live in PA) and that helped his speech along, we then got a diagnosis of autism at 2yr 9 months.
We are doing great, aside of all the insanity of therepies and teachers.
If you are really worried get a evaluation and a hearing test.

Good Luck

I would consult with your pediatrician. My son was not talking much at 2 1/2. His doctor suggested getting an evaluation with the WA county Early Intervention program. (Program up to the age of 3.) They will come out to your house for the evaluation. My son was diagnosed with a 25% delay in speech. The therapists came to our house for his sessions up until he turned three. He is now 4 1/2 and has been enrolled in the WA county Child Alert pre-school program for the last year and a half. He has come along way with his speech. They even help him with other skills, including potty training. It's nice to not have to buy diapers anymore! I am so glad that our pediatrian caught it and made the suggestion to get him evaluated at such an early age.

My son will be 2 in 2 months and is using 2-4 word sentances. he began using basic words such as momma, dadda, kitty, doggie, ball, etc. in context around 11 months. It might not be a bad idea to talk with his ped.
Then again remember that in comparison to girls boys tend to develop slower & it is much more difficult when there are older siblings for several reasons. One being that the younger child does not have the perfect model for speech as the older child did (the older child had the parents- perfect speech models)
If it seems that he is understanding & able to communicate with you in other ways & is making an effort to gain a vocab. don't stress- it will come! Just practice & really try to get him to use his words as much as possible.
There are services available if you feel he needs it, again talk with his ped.
Good luck!

Hi
I have a boy and a girl. My son is the oldest. He didnt use real words till he was almost 2. His Dr said he was fine and that boys talk later than girls. Which makes sense ! Boys are just little MEN !! :-) He made up his own words which we still tease him about to this day. Dont worry...wait until he is 2. Good luck !

Hi there!

Just wanted to let you know that my son was closer to three (he has 3 older brothers and a sitter that worshiped him) before he really talked and now at almosst 14 I cant get him off the phone! All kids are different and any concerns should be addressed with his peditrician. My grandson(who is only child) and just turned four talks non-stop (even when alone) but his mom did the same thing. Everyone grows and develops at their own pace.
Take care!

HI, I wouldn't worry my son who is now 21 months just began to talk. I have a 5 year old girl and yes she did speak for him. She spoke late and when it came to my son I asked the doctor. He said as long as he can understand he is okay example- say where are your eyes and let him point to his eyes, where is your nose things like that. My son now says alot and we told our daughter that she needs to let him ask for what he wants. I hope this helps you and always if you are worried ask your doctor.

Hello there! I just wanted to say that I have two sons and a daughter, and my daughter talked way before my sons did. My niece and nephew are the same way. In fact, my nephew is about the same age as your child and still uses various grunts to convey his wants and needs. I've noticed over the years that girls seem more precocious when it comes to speech, and boys seem more into physicalities such as climbing, etc. Not to worry! Kids do everything when they are ready, and not a minute before. Good Luck!

When my son was about that age he was only saying those words too. He said about 5 words until 18 months and then started saying new words all the time. I wouldn't worry about anything until he was atleast 2! They will talk to you about it at his 18 month well visit.

I babysat for twin boys that were 22 months old and still not talking. I wouldnt worry about it until he was 2! If he wasnt talking by then I would talk to the ped.

My son is also the youngest of three and will be 2 in a couple months. He does say a few words, and pronounces aleast one new word a day, but most of his vocabulary is still jiberish. The doctors have told me it is because of his older brother and sister. Lately I have been pushing his speech, making him try to speak before he gets what he wants. I don't really have any advice, being that I'm going thru it also, I just wanted to let you know that your not the only one. Hope everything works out for you.

I am in the same boat, except I don't have older kids. My son is also 16 mo. old. and doesn't really talk much either. He says "dada" for EVERYTHING. Within the last week he has really taken off a little bit by saying, "up, hello, hot and mama (for more). Several people have told me not to worry - he understands what we are saying - it just takes time. I know he undertands me b/c he will bring me things that I ask for. Hope that helps. I guss we all have to be patient. Just curious - what is an AP family? Goog Luck.

My son is 17 months and still not talking alot. Their language skills take off at about 18 months. As long as he can say a few words he is fine. Plus he probably doesnt need to speak as much since he has two older sisters to speak for him. I wouldnt worry too much but if you are really concerned to talk to your doctor at the next well check.

I'm going through kind of the same thing as you right now. I have boy/girl twins who are almost 18 months. The girl talks SO much more than my boy. But, it really is different with each and every child. Boys to tend to develop a little later than girls normally in that area though. I was a preschool teacher before I had the twins and they were all in this age range. It really is nothing to worry about though, If you can tell he is understanding what you say than he is right on track!!!

I noticed you are using sign language. I expect you do not watch DVDs because of your family values in "A little about me." But if you do, check out some of the Signing Time videos from the library. They are great for helping infants/toddlers use sign language. We taught our son starting at 10 months, we didn't introduce the videos until around 18 months.

My daugter starting talking at one year, and by 2 it didn't grow as it should. Now is receiving speech therapy. My advice is don't wait. If he is not talking more by 18 months (I forget how many words they are suppose to say 25??), contact your local school system. There are early childhood intervention programs. I waited a year, and things never got better. She is 3 1/2 and is talking at the age level of 2 1/2. It hurt my pride to seek help; like I failed at teaching her how to talk. I wish I had sought help sooner, she has social interaction issues and is not potty trained, which I beleive all relates back.
