Boys and Jeans

What do you do? I don't think at this point we have any jeans that aren't patched on at least one knee. And now we are starting to get holes in the other knee. Where does it end? Gap kids have always fit my boys the best but we thought Levi's might stand up a little better...nope! I said I was going to draw the line at patching both knees and just toss them. I think I may get some new ones for my older son even though he may transition up a size soon but figure we may be able to hand down to the little one if they stay in one piece. As for the little one, just hoping to make it to summer if it ever shows up and then I will deal with them in the fall! Do you have any brands that can stand up to my active boys and fit their "solid" frames? Oh and yes, they both LOVE jeans...don't know why but I am sure at some point they will switch on me...ha ha!

What can I do next?

I used to buy jeans from Carter's, Old Navy and Gap...they all fell apart at the knees or frayed on the ends.

So I tried Toughskins from Sears and they have held up so far since last September, none of them have holes. My younger son will be able to wear them and they still look new. And, they were only 11.99. I bought 5 pairs of them and they're all my son wears. They also come in different fits for both slim and solid frames, I bought both and both fit my son with the relaxed fit just being a bit baggy on him.

I feel like you have described my boys to a tee! Mine are 4 and 6 1/2, so not sure they are the same age as yours. My 6 1/2 year old does not destroy them nearly as much as he used to, and he's never been as bad as the 4 year old. Hey, kids are different.

I buy as many pairs of jeans as I can at consignment shops, just to save a little money. My boys love Old Navy jeans, so I keep my eye out for sales. I also try to make sure they wear the patched pants on the weekends and after school whenever possible, so that they can keep the good pants good for as long as possible.

My oldest is much more particular now (really likes Old Navy jeans), but that's ok because he is not as rough on them. So, if your boys are anything like mine, they might grow out of this a little bit and start wearing them longer.

I guess I've just resigned myself to the fact that they are boys who love to play and run and climb and make messes and they are going to cost me more money in jeans (and shoes!) than I was originally expecting.

I know that there are a few stores that will replace jeans, same size only, if the knees wear out before the kid outgrows them. Shopko, used to be one place, fairly certain they still do. I think Sears was another, I believe at one time Kmart did also, but am not sure about them anymore.

Most of these stores weren't close to me, so I just bought cheap, and replaced as needed. Often times, I would keep the holey pants and turn them into shorts for the summer.

I used to buy all my kids jeans at Sears because they would replace the same size if they wore out. For EVERY pair of jeans we would get 2 because they always wore out. Call and ask about the Kidvantage program and see if it still stands. My kids wore jeans like the school uniform!

I used to throw out jeans when they got a small hole.. now.. I keep them until they get a large hole.. I bet by next year I will patch the hole and keep on going.. by 2nd or 3rd grade they spend less time on the floor and their pants last longer.. so Ive heard..

Sears will replace jeans, same size, when they get holes. Call Sears and talk with them to get the details.

Unfortunately Sears ended the program where they will replace worn out items. It ended last summer. That said, the Sears Toughskins jeans are the only ones that my 6 yr old son didn't rip out the knees in.

I remember hearing a mom talk about Sears having a guarantee on their boys jeans. Worth a call.

You don't mention their sizes...
My son loved the Canyon River Blues from Sears. They've held up for over a year, and they all get worn at least once a week.

He also has some Levis Signature from Walmart that have held up well, we've only had those for a few months.

My boys go through jeans like a wildfire too. I usually buy them from Old Navy and Crazy8 b/c you can usually find them on sale at one of those places for $10. They have slim, regular and husky.

Boys ruin clothes, period. Go to Goodwill, Salvation Army, garage sales, other thrift or consignment stores and buy second hand, then you are not out so much money if they get wrecked. Also remember cut off jean shorts - all those with holes in the knees, cut them off and use them for play shorts this summer - you can even hem them if you don't like the ragged cut look.

Good Luck!

My little brother just reminded me that our mom used to do preventative interior knee patches on the boys' pants when she first bought them. It really extended their lives.

Good question, I'm curious too! I just bought 5 pairs of jeans from The Children's Place during their last sale 2 months ago. The last pair got a hole in the knee yesterday.

I know Land's End makes some "Iron Knee" jeans, but I haven't tried them!

You could also try LL Bean or Land's End, if they have jeans with "reinforced knees."

When my son was younger, jeans did not stand up very well. He would fall on his bike or run with his sisters and another hole. Urban Pipeline (?) from Kohl's did stand up really well. I wished they made them for girls because one of my girls has always been more a tomboy and a new pair of jeans was torn by the 2nd wearing.

I buy all my son's pants at the thrift store. That way I am only paying $3-4 a pair. He is 9 and still puts holes in even the toughest of pants. He plays hard outside and slides on the ground a lot. But if I look for pants with double knee layers then I can trim back the torn part once he completely shreds the first layer. I used to try to patch but the patches don't last long enough to make it worth it for me.

I remember the brother, sister and I used to wear holes in our pant knees too. My mom bought some Sears jeans with a guarantee. So my brother thought he would be cute and make a hole using scissors. My mom went through the roof!!!!!!

I have never found a pair of jeans that can withstand my boys while under the age of 10. They are always on the knees. And it has driven me nuts for years. They try to tell me that the holes can be in their knees or lower but I still really don't like for them to wear them to school. The only solution is to keep them off their knees. Like that will happen. Luckly now that my oldest is out of that faze I don't have to worry about his and he can hand his down.
