Hi moms,

My son and his boy scout troop are going on a winter campout for 4 days right before Christmas. The moms want to put together little treat bags for the boys to have since it will be cold camping weather!! We have candy, cookies and hand warmers. Any ideas for inexpensive toys or gadgets for a group of boys aged 11-18? We are preparing for 55 scouts, so the items can't cost too much. I've been to the Dollar Store...bouncy balls and playing cards was all I came up with there. I'm having a hard time because of the age span...11 to 18! Any advice?

EDIT: This is something the scout master is fine with, since it's a merit badge winter campout. Of course, the boys are still on their own..packing, cooking, etc. and moms are definitely not going. Since it's right before Christmas, this is just a treat for the day they get there. No big deal. They are having a holiday campsite decorating contest as well. It should be a blast since they are working on merit badges for 3 days and hiking for 1.

What can I do next?

The things that will most be useful are things like some more's, hot chocolate, cards, small flash lights, Remember things that do not take up space they will be in their back packs, Give the leaders the supplies to make a large dump cake for desert (cake mix, pie filling of your choice, butter) If they do not know what a dump cake is -----line large pan that can go on the fire lined with foil for easy clean-up l, put 2/3's of the cake mix in bottom (do not mix) just the powder--pour filling on top add the rest of mix powder and dot with the butter. While on the fire the butter milts and turns the mix on top into a crumb topping and the filling in the middles gets turned into a pudding type mix this is great while hot and there will most likely not be any left. Mine tried to lick the foil.

i was amazed how much my son and his friends enjoyed working out of this old book i found about string manipulation (cant think of what its called), we used to do it in grade school where you put yarn or string around your hands and make different shapes. cat in the cradle, jacobs ladder, tea cup. i'm sure they still make books like that. you could find one of those books and get a big ball of string and let them have at it! or a paper airplane book and some sheets of paper and have contests. good luck!

Thinking of my boys at this age in scouts, I'm thinking that to be sure there are 4 days worth of hand warmers would be appreciated! I agree that they will be too busy for any toys, and should already have their own flashlights. Maybe packets of hot cocoa could be added, or packets of hot apple cider mix.

As the mother of 4 eagle scouts I completely agree with Susan O. They probably have so much planned that "toys" would not be needed. If they are anything like the scouts I worked with for 20 years all they need to really keep them happy is a lot of matches, something to burn and a safe place to do it.

My son also in scouts although he's still in the Cub Scouts. I have found a lot of good gift ideas at Walmart. They have a section in the camping that is all pretty inexpensive from tools, folding utensils, cups to keep drinks warm, lanterns etc. Some are as inexpensive as $1 then goes up from there but I have gotten several items under $3. Good selection for $1. You could also throw hot chocolate packets and marshmellows in the bags then they just have to boil water instead of milk and they have Hot Cocoa for everyone. Or stuff for smores. Not sure what all they take with them as food for their campout.
