Hello! My 4 year old son has shorter hair in need of a hair cut. The probem is, he has a cow lick on the back of his head so the hair sticks straight up! I'm not sure what or how to style this?! Does anyone have any advice on howI should tell my hairdresser to cut it? I want him to look as adorable as he should!
Thanks!

What can I do next?

My cousins little boy had such a bad cowlick that her only option was buzz cuts for him, or let it all grow long. (he looks cute either way)

My suggestion is to take him to a barber, they would have the best imput on what to do since it is a common problem with boys.

Your stylist should know what to do. I take my son to Sport Clips and they know his hair by now. They will cut it a tad shorter there because his is super thick and it stands up. I call it the mushroom effect! We do a 1 on the sides and a scissor trim on top with a fade in on the sides. I leave the front a tad longer and style it with some gel for that stuck up messy look. That way the top isn't super short and he can still have some style.

My son has cow licks in the back. His hair works best either 1. buzzed or very, very short or 2. Long enough for the cowlick to be weighed down flat. Right now it's long--he wants to look like James on Big Time Rush :-)

lots of little boys.... have hair that is all gelled so that it is all sticking up.
I have seen that...

Or you let it grow longer.... so it lays down.

My son has both the cowlick at the back and the cowlick at the forehead. In summer I have the hairdresser cut it very short. For a longer cut, they do a "scissor" cut. When I cut it myself, I do use clippers, but I still leave the hair long enough at the back to weigh down the cowlick. Also, at the back, I go with the natural flow, and I comb the hair kind of in a circle to the left, the way the hair naturally wants to lay. If the front looks nice, and the back looks combed (it doesn't have to be combed straight down like you would a girl's hair), he looks cute and combed.

I would suggest talking to your hair dresser, and make sure it is one that has been cutting hair for a while and knows how hair acts. I have 3 boys each with their own challenges for hair texture and cowlicks and even head shape it is horrible. One of my twins has cowlicks right in the bangs so we have to cut his bangs longer to weight it down a bit. One has cowlicks in the back so his hair is cut longer in the back. One has just crazy textured hair so his hair is shorter all around. I always wet their hair down to comb it down and spray gel it. And do make sure your hair dresser knows hair because we have made the mistake out of convience of taking the kids to the stylists in the mall where those hair dressers are just fresh out of beauty school, and they always look at me like they don't have a clue, and right now my twin with the bangs cowlick looks like he got ahold of a pair of scissors himself and hacked his own bangs because they do not fall right, and look chopped. I have even taken my daughter and when I have asked them to round her hair around her face and they had no clue how to do it. You can either work with your cowlick or against it. I did not want the spiked look when they were so little so we had it cut longer to weight it down, as they get older I might go shorter so they can spike it. All in what you want, and if the stylist thinks she can accomplish it for you.

We shave our sons hair... a 1 on the sides/back and a 3 on top. We think he looks great, but then again we are biased, hehehe.

Good luck!
