Hello all. I'm curious about milk boxes, you know they look like a juice box, but contain milk. Is this real milk? Why doesn't it need to be refrigerated? I see the boxes and yes it says milk, chocolate milk etc, but I'm still confused. Has it been treated? Little man loves milk and has asked for them but I'm a bit leary. It would be great and easy to send them in lunches. Have any of you tried them? Does it taste like milk? TIA

What can I do next?

I buy the organice individual sized shelf milk. I put some in the fridge and leave the rest in the case until I need to fill the fridge w/ more. My kiddo loves it. It works great for her lunches at school.

I've had the shelf stable milk many times, and it tastes just fine. They treat it differently so that it doesn't have to be refrigerated. However, I drink it AFTER it has been put in the fridge......

Here is the link from Borden Milk about the shelf stable milk... it is just heated to a MUCH higher temperature than your typical bottled milk.

When I was in college and lived in France, I was surprised that boxed milk was the only kind of milk you could buy in the store. Yes, it's real milk. They do something with regard to pasteurizing it and then storing it in an airtight container so it doesn't spoil. Room temperature milk does taste a little different than the ice-cold milk we're used to, but it still tastes like milk. Boxed milk is more common in countries where they don't drink the large quantities of milk that we do here in America. Same stuff, different packaging.

When we go to mexico for vacations that is the only kind of milk they have there. My opinion is that it is slightly different from refridgerated milk....but close enough that my whole family drinks it and doesn't complain. But we put it in the fridge so it is cold.

Yes, it is real milk. It is more extensively heated than required for pasteurization (UHT - Ultra-High-Temperature) and then vacuum packed, that is why it is shelf stable. There are no additives or preservatives to make it shelf stable, it is simply a result of heating it to a higher temp and packing it airtight.

The taste is a little different as a result of basically boiling it (just like scalded milk tastes different). Just have him try it and see if he likes it.

Good luck.
