If I buy a box of white wine to use for cooking, can I keep it in my pantry closet, or does it need to be refridgerated? Will it go bad in the box if it's not kept cold?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. I'll keep in refridgerated for good measure I guess.. tho it will take up a lot of space :/ for those who asked for the recipe, it's sooo easy-- cut up chicken breasts into either strips or cubes (my guy likes cubes) shake it in a bag of flour, salt and pepper. Fry in a little bit of olive oil. Remove the chicken from the pan, add a cup or so of the white wine and let it reduce for a minute or two and let the alcohol cook out. Then add some chicken stock (or water w chicken bouillon) bring up to a simmer, throw in a couple of pats of butter, and then put the chicken back in to simmer for a couple of minutes. The flour from the chicken thickens the sauce a little :) We like ours over spagetti, but it's also good with rice, or whatever starch you and your family like. Enjoy! :)

Another suggestion: I recently bought a 4-pack of white wine (individual serving bottles) to keep on hand for cooking. It's great - just the right amount for a meal here or there, and I don't have to worry about a lot going to waste if we don't drink what's leftover. Look for the little bottles at a liquor store -- I think mine had Barefoot and Sutter Home. Bon appetit!

I always keep mine in the refrigerator because my aunt told me it lasts longer that way. The only time I use my wine is for cooking and very rarely will I have a glass of wine with dinner. If you ask my sons they will tell you I make a mean Garlic Shrimp with Pasta. LOL I'm not sure but some of the boxes say to refrigerate after opening.

It's a sealed bag so it will be fine in your pantry. Just make sure you pour a little out and smell it before each use. If it smells like vinegar, toss it!

Just FYI- I have taken a couple of classes at the Culinary Institute and they use the boxed wine and keep them on their pantry shelves. I'm guessing that if it works for them it should work for you!

Wine with bottles that have corks need to be stored on their sides so that the corks do not dry out and kept in a cool place.
An open bottle should be kept in the fridge on it's side so be careful not to destroy the cork when opening the bottle so it can be reused.
If one doesn't have a wine celler with wine racks:
Over the winter a good place to store a case of wine is in the garage with bottles on it's side so turn the box on it's side. In the summer when the boiler is not running, the basement is a good place...

I'd store it in the fridge. It will last longer. The professional cooks probably go through them a lot quicker than we do, so it wouldn't matter to them.
Once opened, though, white wine will turn into white wine vinegar fairly quickly - which means it's safe to cook with, but only as vinegar.
This is why people check the corks at fancy restaurants. If any air has gotten to the wine through a crack in the cork, then it will first turn into vinegar and eventually become rancid.

Take care and enjoy your meal - What refined taste your son has:). Cheers!

My husband has been in the liquor and wine business for over 20 years so I asked him. It does NOT need to be refrigerated.

It doesn't really need to be refridgerated. But, the colder it is, the longer it will last.

as long as where you store it doesn't go over 80 degrees.. i put some wine in a bottle.. and would put the rest in the basement... then it should last longer.. good luck..

It doesn't need to be in the fridge. It keeps it cold, but that's it. Box wine is "sealed" and lasts longer than bottled wine, chilled or not.
