I have a one year old girl who is on vit D milk and was doing good till about a week maybe two weeks ago and is now stuggling to have bowel movements. She will eat whole fruit like watermelon, strawberrys, bananas. I have used kayro syrup in her bottles. but she seems to throw up hours later when she is trying to complete a BM. She will produce them and you can pintch it and it will smash. yes i know a little much but the more info i can give the better. If any one can help me with this i am open to thoughts. My only other thoughts is to go back to half similac and half reg milk?

What can I do next?

My dd will be 3 in right before Halloween and she has this problem is she drinks milk. She loves it though, so we switched her to goat and she is not having any problems. I don't know about the lactose free milk though, it is certainly cheaper than goat. I don't know if you get WIC or not, but they will switch to goat no problem, but lactose free you need a prescription from the doctor. Also, we have been using Miralax off and on for dd, but she is older. I don't know about a 12 month old. It can't hurt to ask.

Stop the karo syrup - it's pure sugar, has no nutritional value, is bad for the teeth, and helps encourage a sweet tooth. Move into things with nutritive benefit.

If she's constipated, stop the bananas. The BRAT diet is for diarrhea - bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. For constipation, you don't want any of those.

What else is she eating? Whole wheat French toast cubes, pancakes with lots of fiber (oats, wheat germ, flaw meal, etc.), blueberries, etc.?

I'm not sure what you're saying about pinching the BMs and they smash. I'm not grossed out, just trying to get a better picture. Are you saying there is no consistency to the stool? Then you are probably over-fruiting her, believe it or not.

Milk can cause constipation or diarrhea, so from what you're saying, I can't tell if the milk is good or bad.

Please elaborate.

Dont go back to giving formula. Have you thought about maybe her having a sensitivity to the milk? My son had this problem until he started drinking Lactose Free milk. Now he's doing much better.

Try giving her a little watered down prune juice or apple and see if it helps.

Milk and bananas will constipate her, so stop giving bananas, switch to pears, and give her water to drink in addition to the milk, which she needs. Even slight dehydration can make the bowels harder to pass so keep water in a sippy by her all the time. If you want you can substitute some yogurt for the milk so she still gets her calcium.

Also, whether she's walking yet or not, make sure she gets plenty of exercise, like crawling, scooting, moving all around, it will keep things moving through her system. Place toys all around the room or outside so she has to move to get to them, dance with her to music, whatever gets her to move.
