My son Ean has had the same problem, I just used an anal thermometer to gently guide some of the movement out and gave some apple prune juice to soften up the rest of his movements for the day it works quickly.
Hey ladies! I went to get my 10-month old out of her crib this morning and she looked like she was having a bowel movement. When I got her out and changed her nothing was in the diaper. However, it is right there! I can see it, but it is hard as a rock and she can't get it out. Any suggestions? As the poop is right there I don't think I could get one of the baby suppositories in?
Well, she eventually got it out! We already do the yogurt and many of the other suggestions? She definitely won't eat the prunes anymore! We will have to see how we can prevent this from happening again! Thanks all!

Use a Qtip and vasoline put a little on the Qtip and lightly put it in her rectom. It will probably come outright away so put a diaper underneith her. Good Luck!!
don't use suppositories you can try giving the baby koro syrup i had to do that with both my kids or grape juice but once my son started eating regular food i had to cook fiber sure with the meals until he turned 3 years old. because he wasn't getting enough fiber.
I know you already closed this but I didn't see anything about prune juice. You mix regular adult prune juice with water, (1/2 of each). I couldn't find prune juice for my son, and this is what my ped recommended. Give it twice a day until regular and then cut to once a day.
My now 4 year old had this issue and we tried EVERYTHING! He ended up being impacted twice and is now on Miralax daily with amazing results. Now, Im not saying give her meds right away, but it may come to that. When you see her pushing, lay her down and push her knees to her chest (gently), as kids sometimes strain to keep their poops IN when they know its going to hurt. Increase her fruit intake, I've actually had to decrease the Miralax as my kids eat more fresh fruit this summer...lots of fluids...stay away from rice, bananas, milk sometimes. Just remember that if she can't work it out, call the doc.

Gross, but I had to do it with my baby too ... the docs told me to grease my finger up and GENTLY go get it. A few times of this and your baby won't have probs anymore.
Took me awhile to get up the (ew) to do it, but it doesn't hurt baby if you are gentle.
Good luck.
Hey! just read a response .... a anal thermometer would have worked too...WHY didn't they suggest THAT?
Peaches and blueberries used to work wonders for my son when he was an infant (And had chronic constipation), As well as making sure any grains they're getting are whole. The more fiber the better, when it gets bad, as it'll help things move along.
I like the q-tip idea, that might work.
I would check her temp, rectally, That always got my DD to go.
I would do it 30mins or so befor i went some where, to try to get her to go b4 I left, I usually worked.
She is only 10months so she should be getting enough fluids with her formula, and what ever else you let her drink during the day, I wouldn't worry about giving her anymore.
I would start to feed her yougart, it is great for the digestive track, try YO BABY yougart, it has cereal mixed in it. Look for it in the yougart section at the store.
I had the exact same problem with my daughter...the poor thing...
I called the doctor and he asked how brave i was...this is what he told me to do.
take vaseline and massage it in around her anus. Then roll her legs like she's riding a bike, then kind of put her knees to her chest and push a little....all three of those things cause her to push...he said to repeat that several times, sometimes it comes out on its own that way, other times, she will be able to get it out far enough for you to GENTLY break off little pieces with your fingertip....i know...it's gross, but you have to help her....that's why the doctor wanted to know if i was brave! haha he said absolutely DO NOT use an object to break it up...just your finger...and always hold her legs to her chest when doing it....
to help try to prevent it...i bought metamucil and put a little in her juice once a day for about a week or so, or if i changed her diaper and noticed that it was looking very hard. my daughter did grow out of it....
good luck
Two ideas to hopefully prevent future problems. Prunes! Beechnut makes a good one in a jar. The other is adding some water to her diet. Good luck!
Prune juice or baby prunes always worked for me. I have also heard that cheerios and raisins work. If that does not work, I know my doctor suggested myralx (sp?) for my daughter when she could not pass her stools. But as far as how much to give her, you need to first check with your doctor to see if she would recommend it and ask for the correct doseage based on her weight. Good Luck! I know first hand how hard that can be on little ones. My daughter always had trouble with this. She eventually outgrew it.
Hi A.,
I don't know what foods you are feeding her but stay away from rice cereal, bananas. Feed her some prunes or yo baby yogurt. That will help her move things. Good luck.

My niece had the same issue. We had to take some vasaline on our finger and lube up the hole and as she pushed we had to pull it out. If she doesn't go by you helping her she will have to see a doctor. You don't want the fecal matter to build up.
Take a sliver of soap and hold it in her bowl track as much as you can. It will come right out. My son had the same problem. Good luck.
Hello A.,
pears work as well --actually I think they work better-- than prunes. it keeps my daughter going. She just turn 6 and I still put a couple of tablespoons of baby pear in her strawberry milk in the morning. also, did you know that MILK causes constipation too? I didn't believe it until it happened to my daughter. anyways when you get a chance go to
nomilk.com. there is lots of info there. I do love milk and specially cheese so I'm not on an anti-milk campaing, it's just that milk is not got for everybody. good luck! ~carmen~
I guess I'm old fashioned enough that I would think that a call to the pediatrician is in order. Perhaps it's just a one time hard stool, but I'd want to make sure there isn't an obstruction to be concerned about.
Give her time to work it out. If she can't push it out use a little bit of vaseline on a q-tip to lubricate things a bit.
Then work from the other end. Castor oil? Or a baby laxative. Baby prunes. That's natural and effective
I suggest this, but it may not be the most pleasant experience for either of you. My daughter was always getting constipated. The doctor told us to do one of two things - the suppositories or a lubricated thermometer. I agree that you may not get a suppository in. The thermometer you probably wouldn't have to lubricate, but if you chose to you would want to use either a diaper rash cream or vasoline. The thermometer may be enough to get her bowels pushing really well (to the the thermometer out) and push the poop out. If that doesn't work, call the doctor!!
You will want to use a baby enima(spelling?)
That will work fast. Good luck
You could try a little bit of apple juice (half water/half juice. They also make prunes in baby food that is suppose to help with that. I've never tried it but I hear it works.
