Bottom of Stairs Gate

We did not have to deal with stairs with our first child. This time around we have stairs. This is way in advance, but what is a good gate for the bottom of the stairs? I have the curved one at the top and absolutely love it. But, not sure of a good one for the bottom of stairs that you don't have to totally undo to go up and do not have to step over either. Perhaps one that opens with a door? Or something similar. Any feedback would be appreciated! I love MamaSource. I get so much good feedback from my questions! You moms ROCK!!! ;)

M.,

It's been a few years so I don't remember the name - but I got a wooden gate at Baby's R Us 10 years ago. These brackets screw into the wall (Into the studs or with anchors), and the gate slids into the brackets on one end, then opens and closes on the other with another bracket on the wall. It is so great we still use it for our dog. Very steardy and easy to remove and also to open and close.
Good luck,
D.

I have a fabulous swing gate. It is pressure mounted to the wall so that there is no real instalation. I got it at Target. It also has an extension piece for areas that are a little bit wider then regular spaces.

We have a swing gate at the bottom and top of our stairs. Since we don't have a wall to screw into (our stairs have banisters on both sides at the bottom), my husband screwed the gate into two pieces of wood (one on each side) and then we strapped the wood to the banisters on the stairs with some heavy duty zip ties. It's totally a brainchild of my husbands, but it really works and there are no holes in our banisters because he didn't have to screw into them! We actually looked at tons of baby gates and couldn't find any that didn't require at least one wall, so we had to come up with something. Anyway, if you want more info, just let me know.

Good luck and congrats!

We were unable to find a gate to fit the bottom of our stairs. We had a very wide staircase that flared out and got even wider toward the bottom, and the bottom steps were curved, so there was just no way of gating it short of having something custom-made. We ended up putting an extra-wide swing gate on the passage leading out of the living room, into the entrance hall (which is where the stairs were). We also gated the doorway between the kitchen and dining room. That way baby had the run of the living room, kitchen and master bedroom (areas where I spend most of my time), but couldn't get to the stairs, dining room, front door, guest bath or study, which were areas she didn't need to be in anyway. We also had a gate at the top of the stairs so she could be anywhere upstairs, where the playroom and all the kids' bedrooms were.

I don't know about the bottom of the stairs there are plenty that pressure mount with a door. I just wanted to make sure you know there are only two or three gates that are rated and SAFE for the top of the stairs. Make sure the one you have at the top is one of those, please!

We used a company called Baby Proofers. Very resonable cost and we were very pleased with our product. They installed at the bottom of of stairs and also going from out living room/diningroom into the kitchen family room, as well as the top of our staircase. The one going into the family room and the bottom of the stairs is a screen that you pull across and hook. When you want the step open you unlatch and it rolls back up into the other side. Very discreet! The top gate was metal and was permanently installed. You would close and latch to the knewel post of the stairs. It was stong enough that they could crawl and stand on it, but we tried to keep them from doing that. When the boys were old enough you we could just take it down. We still have the one at the bottom of the stairs, because it really is not noticeable when it is not pulled across. Great Products! We just used the local representative from Sugar Land or Houston. Good Luck! Elizabeth
