I am a first time mom to a 13-month old baby girl. We are weaning her from her bottle and I just wondered if you can keep bottles from one child to the next or if you should throw them out and buy all new for baby #2. I don't know when baby #2 will happen (could be a year or two). We use Avent bottles. Any thoughts you have are appreciated.

Thanks!

I used Avent and other brands of bottles for my first and saved all of them for my second (4 years later). Because my first had reflux, we went thru a lot of different bottle brands to find the ones that gave her the least problem, but my second didn't have those issues so we ended up only using the Avent bottles for him. We used what I had saved from my daughter, bought I think 1 package of new and also picked up several real cheap (like 5 big and 3 small) from a garage sale for a dollar. I replaced all the nipples with new ones of course, and thoroughly sterilized all the bottles, rings and lids. They worked as great with my second as they did my first. And it was great having a plethora of Avent bottles for my second. I didn't have to wash/sanitize so often. :-)

We saved our Avent bottles for our 2nd who came 3 years later. We just bought all new nipples. The nipples can break down and cause a choking hazard after being stored for a long time.

I used Avent bottles with my first. My pedi told me to keep the bottles and just get new nipples. Sounds like what everyone else did too. With my second Dr. Browns bottles were finally out to purchase in stores instead of online, so I bought some of those as well. I like them both, Dr. Browns are easier to put in a diaper bag for outings since they have the plastic disc that dose not allow water or breastmilk to the nipple to prevent contamination before the baby uses it.

We too saved our Avent bottles for #2 & #3, five years total. Once we no longer needed them with baby #1 & #2 I would wash & sterilize them and put them up to keep. I did always throw away the nipples and buy new ones for each baby. I have never had any problems except I had one bottle to get a crack in it so I just threw that one away. Other than that they were perfect. I love avent and I attribute our sucess of breaking the bottle habit to them, due to the fact that I can switch to sippy tops with my babies still holding what they think is the bottle-I've never had a problem transitioning from bottle to cup. They are the best, except when they leak at the wrong times! :)

I saved the bottles (also Avent) and bought new nipples for Baby #2. However, he never took to them very well. After having my sitter struggle with difficult feedings for 2 or 3 weeks (and trying nipples with different flow rates without success), I tried a Playtex bottle and he sucked it right down! Of course, I'm the only person I know that this has happened to :-). Most folks I know say baby #2, 3, etc. all used the same bottles at the first. Those Avent are expensive -- I'd save them. If you don't use them next time maybe you'll have a friend or relative who will.
