Cereal should be fed separately when the pediatrician gives the go-ahead. My three kids started cereal around 5 months.

Concerning the nipple, there is usually an age-range for when to switch. It's most important when the teeth start to come in. You will want to have your child sucking with the least amount of pressure so as not to put any pressure on the tooth structures and gums: could cause future orthodontic issues.
good luck

I don't know that you need to change nipple size as long as your baby is doing well with it. If he seems to be having a problem it's time to change. I never had to change with either of my kids.

I started mixing a little cereal to formula and spoon feeding it to my girls at about 4 mos. If he isn't ready for it he will reject it. It takes them awhile to handle eating things from a spoon. Almost as much mushes out as stays in! Stay with it and he will get the hang of it.

Some great advice someone gave me was that if it takes them longer than around 15 minutes to feed (in other words, to finish the bottle), you need to 'up' the nipple size. I think I switched to #2 around 4 months.

As for cereal, I started 'cereal' at 6 months. At 4 months, I started w/food. I gave a 'fruit' for b-fast and a 'veggie' for dinner. I found that cereal was SO constipating for my babies. So, at 6 months, I added just a little cereal to their food.
Good luck! :)

the bottles my daughter used never had bigger nipples they just had faster flows (ie stage 1 was slow flow for new borns and so on for older babies). my daughter was on a stage 1 nipple till about 5 months (i did however keep her with a stage 1 nipple for juice until she got on a cup). i started giving my daughter rice cereal (by spoon) at 4 months and in the bottle at 3 1/2 months with her drs ok. if your baby is showing signs of readiness then try it by the spoon use formula to dilute it.

Hi S.,
I didn't know I had to change the nipple on the bottle and my son was taking forever to finish his bottle. Then someone told me to get a bigger nipple and it was much better. So if you think your son is not getting enough out of the nipple try the next size.

We started cereal when my son turned 4 months. He was a big eater and hungry. Some doctors have you wait longer. See what your doctor says but you can start now if your son seems hungry with just formula. Your doctor can give you a feeding schedule where you try a little at a time and increase each day - just doing one food at a time to make sure there are no allergies.

Hope this helps.

It should say on the nipple package when the best time to transition is. HOWEVER, babies are not advised to get "food" ie: cereal until they are 6 months AND it is advised that you do not put it in a bottle. You feed it with a spoon.
