Hank The Cowdog. My son loved them. I would hear him burst out laughing from the other room.
I second the Percy Jackson series.
Also the "Missing" series by Margaret Peterson Haddix. There are a number of these: Found, Sent, Sabotaged and Torn. They are sorta sci-fi realism I guess.
She also has another series "Among the Shadow Hidden Children" series - or something. My daughter didn't like that series, but the boys in her class loved them. They are mystery-ish in nature.
Also - The Judy Blume books NEVER go out of style. Tales of a 4th grade Nothing etc.
Roald Dahl is great - Esio Trot, The Enormous Crocodile, Fantastic Mr Fox - those are all 5th grade, so might be too young for him depending on his reading level. But these were class assignments for my daughter in the 4th grade.
You can also do the Narnia series and get him started on CS Lewis.
the Percy Jackson series.
