I agree with the other posters and say it's probably kidney stones.
I hope he gets better soon.
Good luck.

My husband had blood in his urine last night. I scheduled him a doctor's appointment for this morning. They ran some tests and he should have the results tomorrow. Does anyone have experience with this? What could it be? He is 40 years old. Thanks in advance.
Update: He also has had pain urinating and abdominal pain. We are expecting results today, and time seems to be crawling. My guess is a UTI, now that he has told me more of the symptoms. Thanks for all the reponses so far.
Update 2: We just received a call from his doctor saying there was an infection, and that they will be sending a camera in to determine the cause.

My husband had that and he had a stone that needed to pass. It could be that, but I don't know for sure-there are other reasons.
Tess,
It's good that he is going to the doctor to check. Typically blood in urine is a small pull or tear in a muscle, kidney stone or a bladder/kidney infection.
For my husband it was kidney stones. We told our doc that I saw blood in his urine but when it was tested it came out negative. About a month later my hubby was doubled over on the floor. I thought he was having a heart attack! I called 911 and long story short they figured out at the hospital it was kidney stones. They gave him this med that wasn't covered under our insurance and very costly and he passed the stone 2 days later.
I do not know if it is related but I dated a guy who lifted weights and that was the cause of his blood in his urine.
he had lifted a bit to much one day.
Tess,
My husband has blood in his urine also but, it is due to having a disease called Amyloidosis. This disease attacks the kidneys and other body parts. I don't want to scare you or you to get scared from other responses. This blood in the urine can be simple he could have lifted something heavyand put strain on his body or even been hit in the back in the kidney area.
Please keep me informed on what is found.
I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers for good news. don't look for the worst until the results come back, I was thinking the worst and got it so think positive.

Please go the link I provided and read up on that page. It'll give you some great information. Here's a bit from the page.
"blood in the urine is a sign of something. Something that is not right somewhere within the urogenital tract. For men and women. It could be something as simple as a low-grade infection. It might be a bladder or kidney stone, bobbling around causing irritation of the lining and therefore blood. Or it may be an early warning sign of a kidney cancer, ureteral cancer or even a bladder cancer."

I would say with his age it most likely a kiddney stone! Does he complain of a lower back pain or tightness? My husband has the same problems and it turned out to be a kiddney stone. Hope everything turns out ok for your family!
A common cause of blood in urine would be a kidney stone or kidney infection, but he would probably be having significant pain with those things.
It may be a Urinary Tract Infection, Kidney infection, or even a bladder infection. Another thought is it could be a kidney stone moving around.
Dear Tess,
My husband had blood in his urine a couple of weeks before he told me. Got him into the urologist the next day and he had cancer. Don't be alarmed. This may be something different. The doctor scheduled him for surgery the following week and took five malignant tumors out of his bladder. That was
in 1999 and he is doing well. Gets a checkup now every year. It had not broken through the wall so we are so thankful that it turned out as it did. So even IF it is, please know that if you get bladder cancer on time he will be fine. Hope I have helped and not just frightenes you. Bless you both.

My husband had a bladder infection. Went to the dr and no big deal. Do have it checked out but don't panic.

Hi Tess,
Does he have high blood pressure? It could be a number of things, but the first thing that came to mind is his kidneys. It could mean an infection or possibly stones. Good thing he is getting tests. Hope everything is alright.
