Blood from Baby's Nipple

My four months old recently started spotting her undershrits. The little drops of blood are coming from her nipple. My pediatrician does not think it was trauma because there are no signs of injury in that area (or any other area), yet he has not seen this before. There are no other symptoms - she's eating, sleeping, playing as usual. Has anyone ever scene this? What is going on?

What can I do next?

Hello A.,

I hope your daughter is doing fine now.My daughter is also having bloody nipple discharge esp from her right nipple. It all started when she was around 4 months and she is almost 8 months now and it has not gone away. Bleeding is on/off and she is not bothered about it. Otherwise, she is a very active girl and reached all her milestones.
We got all her hormones and other tests mentioned on all the publications online and they appear to be normal. We also consulted endocronoligist and she is at loss too. Infact, her ultrasound revealed a small cyst on right breast. The repeat ultrasound after 3 months showed the cyst is still there and of the same size.
We don't know whats caused the cyst to develop or the bleeding. I am not taking any medications except vitamins or soy etc. While searching more info online, I came across your question and wanted to check how is your daughter doing now? What all testing was done for her and what was the diagnosis and prognosis?
Did the cyst go away on its own or was there any surgical intervention? There are not many reported cases for this so don't know which path to take.
I am very worried and looking for some concrete info on this issue as I have consulted so many doctors and they have never seen it happening and have not much info to offer.

You might want to go on the Wolfson Children's hospital website and tell them about this. I'm sure your Dr. is a good one, but in this case 2 or more heads are better than one. Take Care A.

I am sorry I have no similar situation for you, but I do sympathize. I googled for you and only found people looking for answers as well. Good luck in finding the cause. I pray it is nothing to worry about.

I have heard of this happening after birth, but seems odd to have it just start happening at 4 months. If i were you I would see if you can get a second opinion just to ease my mind. There are some great pediatric reference websites too that I regularly use.

Ok.. this is what I think.. I could be wrong.. but let me explain.. when my daughter was a newborn she had discharge from her nipples and vagina.. this being my only daughter, it freaked me out!! I spoke with my OB about it and he said that it is common.. that some of my hormones had transferred over to her and I may see the discharge up to about 6 months of age... that it was harmless.. just scary.. and he was right.. was completely gone by 6 months of age. Hope this helps!! God Bless!!!

Hey A..
I have heard of discharge before, but not bloody. So I, too, googled it. I DID find a page with some limited information (see below). The gist of what I got out of it was that it is indeed rare in infants, but all documented cases were benign and resolved on its own within a few months. I will warn you, the beginning paragraphs sound scary, but once you read through the article, it clarifies that there are no documented instances where this symptom was anything but benign and self resolving without medical intervention.
I hope this helps.
