Hi Moms,
I have a seven week old who has been pretty much fussy since we brought her home from the hospital, she has had long bouts of colic, and we have tried just about every formula (I was unfortunately not able to breastfeed her), and also everything for the colic (previous post of mine), etc. She would scream and cry and be up for periods as long as eight hours at three weeks old. Finally after trying almost every formula we settle on Nutramigen and the test of time. She seemed to be sleeping a little better and crying a little less and I thought we were at a turning point. However, she has been on Prevacid for reflux/vomiting. the spitting up vomiting have not gotten better. She can only go two hours sometimes before she eats again. Now this week she has blood and mucus in her stool. This afternoon she was acting so fussy and crying a lot again.
We have an apt. with the specialist on Friday. I think the Pedi is suspecting a milk protein allergy. She has been so fussy and miserable, I see how happy and content other babies are, and I am desperate to help my little girl. Has anyone had experience with the blood and mucus in stool and these symptoms and what was the result? As always, any help is greatly appreciated. (But please do not send me info on soothing a colicky baby or anything like that, we have already been through all that ;) This is clearly a medical issue at this point.

So What Happened?

Hi, this did end up being a severe milk and soy protein allergy. My baby is now on prescription formula, and doing better although it took a full three weeks from her to recover from the inflamation, etc. Thanks so much for validating what I was thinking it was!!!

Hi !

Same thing happened to my daughter. She was diagnosed to be allergic with cow's milk and she's lactose-intolerant.
She was on Nutramigen for about a year and after that we switched to Soy milk. It works !
I think it's best to test her for some allergies.

I've always heard that was a sign of a milk allergy as well. Good luck!

My oldest had blood and mucus in his stool and it was a milk protein allergy. He also had reflux which made him a not so happy boy. After getting the milk allergy under control things were much better.

Probably milk allergy. A friend of mine had the same exact problem with both of her sons and she had to switch to soy in her diet (she breastfed) as well as formula. I actually had to switch to soy for my son as well and it has helped him. Hopefully that will help. Good Luck.

Our daughter had that at 5 wks. We put her on Nutramigen and it worked great for her. We were told it was most likely a milk protien allergy. She is now 18 months and has several food allergies mostly wheat and dairy.

When my son (#2) was born I nursed full time and he was colicky and miserable the whole time then I tried nursing and formula, taking out dairy in my diet while nursing, and then soy formula alone. Nothing worked. Finally, his pediatrician did a test on his stool which revealed he had blood in his stool. It also had some mucus. He said the blood and mucus clearly indicated a milk protein allergy. We switched him to Nutramigen and it worked great. He was 5 months at that point. I'm not sure, but I do think it does sometimes take a little while for the symptoms to clear up even though she is now on the Nutramigen. My oldest son (#1) had reflux even on Zantac and now takes Prilosec and it works great for the vomiting. My youngest son (#3)just got diagnosed with reflux in July and is now on Prevacid so I have dealt with vomiting, reflux, and several other Pediatric GI issues. If you need a really good GI doctor, we go to Dr. Jae-Koo An (Dr. Jack) at Dallas Medical City and he is also at Centennial Medical Center once a month in Frisco. We have also seen Annette Whitney and she is in the same practice with him. It is called Digestive Health Associates. Good luck and hang in there.
