Blinking

Hello,

I am trying no to freak out about this but my little one turning 14 months has this weird blinking that he does once in a while. He'll close his eyes shut and open then with a fluttering if that makes sense. Of course I looked on-line and got freaked out because I came up with some stuff about Tourette's and I'm pretty sure it's not that and fetal alcohol syndrom, but I'm sure it's not that. Co-workers tell me not to worry. Maybe it's just something he's discovered or he has long eye lashes. Anyhow, just wanted to get some feedback. I did make appt. with pediatrician for next week. Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to all who responded. I saw pediatrician today and she checked his eyes. First said she thinks he may have a lazy left eye. Then checked them again and said she thinks his eyes are fine and it is nothing to worry about. She referred me to an opthamolgist just to make sure he is okay. She thinks he may just be discovering what he can do with his eyes or could be a tick. So, we will see specialist and see what he says. I'm more relaxed now. Thank you again.

Don't worry, G.!

Mine did that too, at that age. I studied it, then thought about it for a couple of weeks. (As a food coach, after seeing many "miracles" in my work over ten years I even had her regenerative diet planned to put her little body into balance if it WAS something!) Then it hit me, she was trying to WINK BACK AT ME, because she saw me winking at her!

I know others who explore like that then go on with other development. It's fun for them, don't you think?

Shine on,

T.

You can check with the doctor just to be sure, but my son started doing this when he became aware of his face. He would also stick out his tongue for as long as he could...very funny to watch. My Mom calls it his flirty eyes...he's 2.5 now and only does it to mimic Grandma.

But, when in doubt check with the Pediatrician.

Good Luck,

D.

Tourette's syndrome generally does not begin to show until the school-age years but as early as 3 or four, so I wouldn't be too worried. Both of my kid's have Tourette's (which isn't as bad as most think because of the media stereotypes). It is a misunderstood, hereditary neurological disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics occuring for more than a year. Blinking can be one of many symptoms that occur usually in rapid succession, not every so often
It's most likely something he just discovered he can do with his eyelids.

it doesn't sound like a small seizure, but it sounds like a "silent seizure". at my school site, the district nurse had all of us teachers watch a video on this topic and they often go undiagnosed as people don't know what to look for. regardless, talk to your pediatrician. before you go to the pedtirican, begin a log and record how long they last, when they occurr (what was he doing before the onset, etc...), time of day... this will only help the pedritician make an accurate diagnosis.

My son was rocking his head, has now grown out of it, but she was asking me questions that were about seizures when i brought it up. good luck!

Hi G.
I think it's great that you are taking him to the Pediatrician, but I'd also take him to a Pediatric Opthamologist. The Ped's office cant check the eyes as thouroughly as an Opthamologist can as they have a lot of special equipment designed just for the eye. My daughter used to close one eye when she was watching tv and we all thought it was just an annoying habit. The Ped didnt find anything wrong and when I took her to the eye dr they found that she was in desperate need of glasses and that eye that she was closing is very week so we have lots of work to do but so happy we looked into it. Good luck! S.

The doctor should be able to tell you what other behaviors would correspond if it is a concern. My son was doing a weird thing that looked like a seizure from about 7-13 months that was really freaking me out. The pediatrician said that as long as I could "snap him out of it" by saying his name or touching his arm, and that he wasn't losing consciousness or acting differently afterward, that it was nothing to worry about. I watched him carefully and noticed that he always did it when he saw food or animals (his two favorite things until he discovered the trash truck). He is now 18 months old and he hasn't done it in a few months. Hopefully your son has just developed a little "quirk".

Good luck!!!!

G.,

I noticed you mentioned F.A.S. Is there any reason you should be concerned that the baby was exposed to alcohol in great enough volumes? I know, as I, sometimes the mother doesnt know she's pregnant for the first month and drank. I was so freaked out by it I cried and cried thinking sure I damaged the baby, and for nine months I silently suffered. She was fine. It takes alot of alcohol at the right timing to damage an infant. However I wouldnt say at all that drinking is safe by all means. Alcohol is the WORST drug all the way around, for baby, and for the person drinking it.

this could be the result of minor seizures and if you don't get what you need from the ped try a neuro and children's hospital might be a good starting place. Pls don't let anyone tell you "it's nothing" or "he will grow out of it" IT IS MUCH BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. Always error on the side of caution.....please.

Is it possible he is having little seizures? These might be called petite mall. Ask your doctor, he can ask you all the right questions, and good for you that you aren't freaking out! You being calm and collected is better no matter what it is!

Hi G.,
What do his eyes do when he does this? Are they still focused or are his eyes rolling back into his head? Is his body motionless or is he twitching? I am asking because this almost sounds like a mini seizure called a petit mal. I would bring up the possibility of this to have him checked.
