I had my son on Dec. 1st 2006 and had the normal post child bleeding. Then I stopped for a week in the end of Jan. and have been bleeeding ever since. I have tried birth control to regulate the problem even using two at one time per the advice of my doctor. I have tried depo and the pill and still nothing. It isn't just a little blood either it is a full on period. I am even anemic because of it. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this or know of anyone who has. I need to know what to do. It has ruined my sex life because there is NONE. But I am mostly concerned about my health and my doctor is making it seem like it is no big deal. She just gives me the "Ohhh. Yea it's a little bit of an inconvenience." In actuality it is a big inconvenience and starting to take its toll on my body. The constant use of a tampon is doing damage and I can't wear pads because they are just horrible and messy. I need some advice so if yu have any please let me know.

What can I do next?

Hi A.,

I felt compelled to write to you because I had the exact same issue after I had my daughter this past December. I bled for nearly 4 months!! My doctor also seemed very unconcerned...perhaps we have the same doctor! :) So I stopped taking the pill. Within 2 days, I stopped bleeding. Don't know why and the doctor didn't either. I've decided that until I have regular periods again, that I am not going to take birth control orally. Good luck and I don't know about you, but after 8 years, I've decided that it's time to find a new doctor. One that takes my issues a little less lightly.

I would find another doctor. There could have been internal damage when you had the baby. Get a new doctor and demand they do an ultra sound or exam to find out if there is anything damaged internally.

I had the exact same problem after I had my son. I bled, and bled, and bled. It wasn't even just a stream. (Excuse me for this one) I passed major chunks too!! I was on Depo and that slowed a lot of it, but I still bled a little constantly. What I did find worked was the Patch. HOWEVER, this is very important, DO NOT USE THIS IF YOU ARE NURSING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sry for all the caps, but I found this out the hard way, and I cannot stress enough to anyone I meet. The Patch will definitely harm the Health, Growth, and Development, of your baby. If you are nursing, then definitely go to another Dr. and see what's up. If they haven't done an ultra sound, request it. You could very easily have something left in there that needs to be taken out. They checked and it wasn't the case for me, but it is definitely worth a try.

Take care and keep us posted,
M. M.

You need to go see a different doctor. Bleeding for 5 months is NOT normal. Always trust your instincts and it seems as it your instincts are telling you that this isn't normal. LISTEN!!!! Good luck.

Get another DR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your health and mental well being is getting disturbed because of this. My mother recently started bleeding like that and she went through it for about 2 years 5 months at a time and finally went to see a doctor and turns out she has such bad adhesions and scar tissue from her two births that it was causing infections and so many problems, she had to have a hysterectomy. I'm not saying that you would have that, but bleeding for that long is serious and shouldn't be ignored any longer. There are so many things that could be happenening to you right now that you for your piece of mind need to find out what it is. A simple D&C may be all you need, and you'll feel like a new woman. Find a new doctor please!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi A.,

I am so sorry you are having to deal with this. I too went through this. Although, it sounds like you are experiencing it worse than I did. Here's my story. I had my son in November of 2006 and had the regular bleeding after for 2 weeks. Then I didn't have a period until March of 2007. Once it started though, it never seemed to stop or let up. I was going through pads and tampons like crazy. I had to use a tampon and a pad at all times. Super inconvenient and like you said no sex life. I expected a longer period, but it went on for 3 weeks. I finally went to see my doctor and she did an ultrasound to make sure I wasn't pregnant and having a miscarriage. Once that was ruled out she could see I had a build up due to not ovulating. That is why I didn't get my period until March. For some reason I wasn't ovulating in Dec, Jan and Feb. So my body was trying to rid itself of the build up. Anyway, she had me take 3 birth control pills a day for one week, which stopped the bleeding. Then after that week start the birth control as you normally would. Well once I did that the bleeding started again and it was worse. There was clotting and cramping. I was getting scared. So I called again and they said to just keep taking the one pill a day and it would eventually work itself out. If by the end of the new pack I hadn't stopped bleeding I was to go back to see my doctor, but it stopped. I was bleeding for almost 2 months! It sounds like your situation is much worse. Perhaps you should get a second opinion. Maybe a different type of birth control would help. I can't imagine all that bleeding is good for you. I think you should trust your intuition. If you feel something is wrong with your doctors reaction then there probably is. You have every right to have your concerns heard and responded to properly. Afterall, this is your health and you want to be healthy for your family. The type of birth control I am using is FemconFe. I don't know if that makes a difference or not, but probably worth asking about. Feel free to ask me any questions. I'm not sure what health carrier you have, but I'd be happy to give you my doctors number if you like.

Good luck and hang in there!

you definitely should seeks another doctor's opinion. obviously this is bad for your health, and affecting your life in some very negative ways. when my son was 5 months old i started bleeding for a several weeks, non-stop (not really bad but enough to worry), and i called my doctor's office over and over and said "this isn't normal, what's going on?" and they kept saying "its just the birth control you are on, don't worry this happens." but i knew something was wrong. finally they gave me a pregnancy test- just to rule pregnancy out- and it turned out i was miscarrying a pregnancy i didn't even know i had. moral of the story- women know when something isn't right with their bodies, even when the doctor says there isn't anything wrong. don't be afraid to be pushy, you shouldn't have to live with it!

I would strongly recommend going to another doctor and getting a second opinion. You deserve a real solution, not just an "I'm sorry". There could be a serious problem that your current doctor is overlooking. I wish you luck and hope that you find the help you are looking for.-- L.

I had the same problem with my 2nd child. It turned out it was the pill causing the constant bleeding. Once I was off bc all together I was fine.

One simple thing: GET A NEW DOCTOR!

This is not normal, it is more than an inconvenience, and is obviously harming you!

Too many doctors think a woman bleeding is just a normal thing, and tell us any problems we have are all in our head. Get a second, a third, even a fourth opinion until you find someone who takes it seriously.

Good luck!

Part of the placenta could still be in your uterus! It happens, and I just read about it.
See another doctor, i would think an ultrasound should be done or something to make sure everything is ok.
here's the story I read:

i had an issue like yours. my son is 7 months and i bled for 3 months after he was born. it turned out that i may have had an infection. my dr. put me on zithromax and in about 3 days the bleeding stopped. they told me that if the bleeding would not have stopped, they would have needed to do a d&c to make sure that i didnt have any tissues left from the placenta. hope this helps!!! let me know how things turn out

Definately find another doc. That kind of bleeding is common in my family because of VonWillibrands factor 8 deficiency. You might want to be tested for that because it is a female/male bleeding disorder, 2 of my 4 children have it and the oldest showed no symptoms until she was 19. My youngest was diagnosed before surgery but DDAVP is wonderful.
However I have no symptoms but I passed it to my children and it was vital that they be tested because it it only active in my family at childbearing years, injuries, and surgerys.

Dear A.,

Go immediately to a gynecologist (spelling?), and if she or he will not help you go to another one. This is a very bad state of affairs for you to be so uncomfortable and it is not healthy for you mentally or physically. I don't know why doctors don't listen to us, but they don't so you need to learn to ask more questions in detail, and ask for a referral to a gynecologist if you need one through your health insurance. Don't let them intimidate you, just ask politely, and be persistent. Good Luck, C. N.
