Hi everyone. I was expecting my menstrual period on October 12th, however went to the doctor for a blood test on October 8th and my HCG level was 12, so low that I took a home pregnancy test the same day and it was negative. On friday the October 10, I took a home pregnancy test and it was positive…..I was thrilled. Today (October 12th) I stated bleeding just like my regular period with some cramping! I went to the doctor and my HCG level is only 15. I'm devastated I don't know what to think. I'm supposed to go back for another HCG test on the 14th…I'm terrified.

What can I do next?

I went through something similar except when they tested me I was at around 200 and it kept dropping. Unfortunately, I had a miscarriage. Many women go through this and because it's so early in the pregnancy, often times women don't even know they've had one. I know how hard it is emotionally, haven't gone through that twice.

E. take it from a grandmother. Stop taking pregnancy home tests and getting HCG levels tested. You will make yourself crazy. Just be patient. When period is two weeks late (at the earliest) you can test. Thank goodness we never had these HPT. Missed second period and then went to doctor. Just try to relax and wait.

Welcome to MMP!

This is not a medical site with MD's passing out medical opinions. We are moms, some educated, some not.

Personally, never once during my fertile, baby making years did I test HCG levels and watch them this closely.

I'm sorry you are going through this. We see so many women on this site (and in our lives) who spend a fortune on home pregnancy tests that promise early results, and they get a whole lot of false readings both positive and negative. You started bleeding right on schedule so it's hard to know if it's your period and the HCG levels were misleading, or if it's what you fear (that you were briefly pregnant).

As hard as it is to wait - I think it's really easier emotionally to wait until a period is actually missed, and even then to give it at least 1-2 weeks. (I know that sounds like "the old days" but it makes a lot of sense in many respects.) The emotional roller coaster is so much harder than the waiting. Have a talk with your doctor before you go in for a whole bunch of repeat tests, and decide what makes the most sense financially, emotionally and medically.

This is why I never took a pregnancy test until I was a full two weeks late. Too often the pregnancy doesn't "take" and then you end up sad and disappointed.
Stop testing so early, you're just setting yourself up for unnecessary pain!!!

No advice from me, just empathy. It's devastating to lose a baby, even if it's early. I hope that this is just a fluky thing and that your appointment tomorrow eases your fears and that you have a healthy pregnancy. If you are not pregnant, whether you lost the baby or there was never one there and your hormones were just off, I hope that you will have peace and comfort and a baby in your arms someday soon.

According to what I've found - although less than 5 is not pregnant, it has to be greater than 25 to be positive for pregnant.
There after the numbers should be increasing rapidly (like almost doubling) every few days.
You never got above 25 (although you were higher than 5).
You were expecting your period and you got your period on the day you thought it would come.
It looks like nothing really got started.
Sorry it's not the answer you were hoping for.
Wanting to get pregnant and getting your period is a disappointment - an emotional roller coaster ride every month.
I know how it is - we went through 4 years of TTC before we got pregnant the 1st time we tried IVF.
If you've been trying for a year (a year if your younger than 35, 6 months if your over 35) with no success then it's time for you and your husband to go see a fertility specialist.

Sounds like you had a chemical pregnancy. It happens when the egg is fertilized which gives you the positive hpt but it doesn't implant successfully. Thus, your period starting. When we were trying our rule of thumb was to wait four days before my period was late to test. I don't know how long you've been trying but from experience I've found it's less stressful if you don't focus on the timing and all that. Sorry, I know it's disheartening.
