It could very well be here iron intake or her calcium intake. I would take her to her pediatrician when you can. Don't get crazy concerned- just something they need to look into. Does she take any medication? I know as adults- things such as Pepto Bismol can do the same. It is a reaction to something she is tkaing in. Could be absolutely nothing. Are you still nursing her? Culd be something you are intaking. It is something reacting with the acids in her stomach.

M.,
I don't know if your daughter has been on any medicine. But I do know the pepto-bismol if taken before bed can make you wake up with a black tongue. There's an ingredient in it, i'm not sure which one, but i'm sure you could do an online search, but when it combines w/ your saliva (for an extended period of time ie. overnight) it turns black.
just a thought.

Hm, I don't know. Is there a way she could have gotten ahold of something that could turn her tongue black? If you can't think of anything you may want to call a doc about this. It seems very odd to me.

Hi M.,
There is actually a dental condition called "black hairy tongue" it is usually caused by bacteria that colonizes in the papillae -- the different sized bumps -- on the back and sides of the tongue. This could be from different medicines or from diet. Most often is treated just by cleaning the tongue by scraping, or adjustings meds and diet as needed. She is very young so it may not be easy, but try scraping her tongue gently with a tongue cleaner or a plastic spoon, and see if the discoloration comes off. Definitely take her to see your pediatrician, but hopefully it's nothing to be concerned with.

Could she have gotten ahold of a black marker or something along those lines? I would definitely contact your doctor, better safe than sorry. Good luck and let us know what it is!
