Black Spots on My Baby's Gums

I was playing with my 10 month old son yesterday and noticed 2 black spots on his upper gums. One on each side. I got nervous and called my dentist to ask what it could be. They told me that he could be teething. I looked it up last night and someone mentioned their son has Blood Hematoma. Is this a common thing? I don't remember my daughter ever having this. Just to make sure I have an appointment with the dentist to check it out at 1:45. I guess what I am asking is, did anyone else have this and what can I do for it? Thank you

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I took him to the dentist and he said everything was fine. Its blood pooling in the gums and will go away when the teeth break through. Thank you all for the information. Just felt better taking him to get checked since it never happened to my daughter.

It didn't happen with my son, but my daughter got them when her top front teeth came in and also a few molars. It's basically a bruise from new teeth coming in. I don't think there is anything you can do besides the basics of relieving teething discomfort.

My daughter had something similar, to me it looked dark blue and it was like a bump on her gums. I immediately thought infection or something and took her to the dentist that day. He said it's normal and called it an eruption cyst. It went away once her tooth came.

A hematoma is just a bruise / the medical Latin name for it.

Yep.

Totall common. They bite down, the new teeth pinpoint extra pressure, a bruise forms.

I think you are doing the right thing to get it checked out. Infants can have teeth come in with cavities already on them (not typical, but can happen). My DD had a precavity on a front tooth at 10 mo. and has seen a pediatric dentist since. Hopefully it's nothing major.

My middle son got them when he was teething- they were huge and looked terrible. So disturbing! But they did go away when the tooth broke through, and never caused any problems besides looking horrendous. My other two never got them.
