Nail biting is a very difficult habit to break, so be kind and gentle with her while you attempt to help her stop. As a nail biter myself, I knew that as I was growing up, my mother would yell at me or nag me to stop, which only made me feel like I couldn't accomplish anything. Nail biting can go deeper too. Most kids whoo bite their nails are nervous or shy and it is a way that they can cope with things.

As far as trying to sop the occurance....try bandaids, lemon juice, the bitter polishes or cotton gloves.

Good luck

Since she is only 4 maybe try that nail polish that tastes really nasty? I would ask her DR. first though, but I would think that her being 4 the nail polish just might work. GL

Hey there. I used to bite my nails to the point of bleeding. It finally stopped (except the occasional broken nail or hang nail removal) when one of my junior high teachers brought one slice of bread to me and told me to clean out from under my nails and to put it on the bread. After I did she told me to go on ahead and eat it because that was what I was basically doing (minus the bread) and everything my hands had touched was under my nails and I was eating it anyway. She just thought she would "help" me and make it appetizing! :0 Needless to say I didn't chew like that ever again. I didn't actually eat the bread but it was a much needed demonstration of just how gross it was.
