I have a four year old daughter that has been getting bites all over her lower parts of her legs and on one side of her stomach. At first I thought it was mosquitos but now I am thinking they are flea bites. The only problem she is the only one in the house getting bit, I have scrub her spots with soap and water plus have plus a cream on there. We are going to the doctor today to see what he says but I wanted to see if anyone had this same problem. We had a cat about 2 weeks ago come in for a few nights but the funny thing is she is just now getting the bites, my husband thinks they are coming from outside because our neighbors have like 2 dogs and a whole bunch of cats and they are in and out of their house all day so I am not sure what to do or where to start.

What can I do next?

The exterminator said that you will see an abundance of fleas after the animals are gone. Why? Because they no longer have the animals to feed off of. So they begin looking for the next closest thing, humans. And since your child is closer the the ground than you she is the first target. There are cheap powders you can get to put all over your carpet. Right after you sweep the powder empty your sweeper outside. Repeat this everyday for about a week. They will be gone. I think the powder was only a couple dollars and I only needed 2. I had a huge house, three story. The people we bought it from had 9 cats I was told. Oh the fleas! God Bless!

If she plays outside, they could very well be chigger bites. Chiggers are very tiny little red bugs that hang out in the grass. I don't think you can get rid of them, but you can contro them by keeping your lawn cut really short. You also should consider a bug repellent for her, especially with mosquito issues. Good luck!

I would try different things. Keep her in the house for a few days and see if they start getting better. If they do then you know it is outside. If not, then it could possibly be in your house. I think having a dr see it is a good idea but not sure if he will know what it is by looking.

Does your little girl go to pre-school or daycare?? It sounds like it could be scabies. Scabies is an infestation by the itch mite. They are tiny, just 1/3 millimeter long, and burrow into the skin to produce intense itching, which tends to be worse at night. The mites which cause scabies are not visible with the naked eye but can be seen with a magnifying glass or microscope.
I teach Kindergarten and we have recently seen an outbreak. It is contagious through skin to skin contact. They look similar to mosquito bites but are usually in a "connect-the-dot" pattern. I know it sounds really gross, fortunately it is easy to treat. You do however, have to go to the doctor and get a certain kind of cream (not sure what kind)to treat it. Hope this helps!

Flea eggs can stay dormant for up to six months. And for some strange reason, I'm the only person in the house that gets bitten. My solution is this: spray your yard, and put Advantage on your cat. If you don't feel like buying 4 doses at once a vet ought to sell you a single for about $12. Vacuum your carpets and your hardwood floors, put a flea collar in the bag, if it's a canister, freeze the canister for three days then empty it outside. Don't punish your kitty, either. It's hard for animals to live outside with all the parasites that live out there. PLEASE put the Advantage on your cat once a month, even in the winter, to keep your kitty from sharing parasites with your neighbors' animals.

I'd also like to add that fleas transmit tapeworms through ingestion, so your cat and your family are susceptible to that as well if your house is full of fleas.

Have you washed all the blankets and rugs etc in her room. I got a flea infestation last spring. My cat never goes outside but there are several cats that run loose in the neighborhood. I had evidently carried them in on my shoes. I treated my yard with granules and then watered it. If you can do it just before a rain, then you don't have to water. Do this two weeks in a row. Also I had Ameri-care spray my house for fleas. I vacuumed just before they came and emptied the vacum bag outside in the dumpster. and then the next morning after they sprayed I vacuumed again and emptied it outside too.
They did have to come back a second time about 2 weeks after the first and treat again but it did get rid of the fleas. Another thing to consider, I have read that bed bugs are making a come back and in some places are epidemic. This is a much worse problem to get rid of. If you treat your yard and your neighbors have all those animals and don't treat, you will probably have to treat your yard regularly. I have Ameri-care come every quarter just to make sure I don't have a problem. I seem to live on an ant hill and when it rains, they come in and the quarterly treatment keeps them at bay. It is not that expensive to do quarterly. I pay $59. a quarter and for the flea treatment, it was $27 or $28. Not bad considering what you end up paying to do yourself.
Good luck and have either a doctor look at her bites or someone with some knowledge of these things to be sure what to treat for. You might also try using some type of mint based cream to rub on her legs.

You mentioned the cat -- it could be that if the cat had any fleas on her they jumped off and their eggs are only now just hatching in your home.... two weeks later. You need to "bomb" the house with something that kills fleas and their eggs. You must stay out of it for a few hours, etc. Best to call a pest control company as their chemicals will be better than what you can buy over the counter and they will know exactly how to solve the problem.

More than likely it is chigger bites. Go to Google and then search images and search flea bites and chigger bites and see which one her bites look like. My son got attacked by a bunch of them (they lie around and wait for you to walk near where they are, like in the bushes or in the grass) and he had about 30 bites for about 2 weeks. They take a long time to heal. The best thing for his was to just bathe him and use Ivory or Dove soap and then use calamine lotion. But they took a long time to go away. Good luck!

flea bites are usually just small red dots on the skin. As a kid, we chronically had fleas and my dad is an exterminator! Our was indoor/outdoor and was always bringing them in (the days before advantage/frontline). Mosquito bites usually swell up. If she seems to be getting them while sleeping, don't rule out the possibility of bedbugs. They are becoming more prevalent in the US and could have been brought into your home a variety of ways. Bed bugs usually follow veins when biting so the bite areas tend to look linear.

I believe it is fleas in your carpet. But it could also be bed-bugs. Treat all the carpets and your childs bed.

Betcha $100 it's fleas in your carpet (if you HAVE carpet). Fleas bite through skin, and the thinner and more tender that skin is, the BETTER they like it. We got fleas in our house once (from a VISITING dog -- ours stayed outside), and our youngest daughter (of 4 kids) was the main one affected by the bites -- weeks later! You'll probably have to 'bomb' them.

God bless your little (enlarging) family!

My husband and I used to breed chihuahuas and never had a single flea. We used Bayer insect spray every 2 weeks for 2 months and as directed after that. My neighbors had hunting dogs, so we also sprayed the yard on a weekly basis for 2 months with a yard insectiside. And to this day we still do not have fleas. My husband would spray, and then we would leave the house for a couple of hours. It is safe for the children and pets once it is dry. Hope this helps.
