By 4 years old, most 12 year oldswill not even want to be there. Keep the games for the younger children and let the preteens help with the party so they feel like part of the adult group they're entering. They'll appreciate the party more that way.

How about a birthday party like we had in the old days? I remember my birthday parties were filled with playing tag and pin the tail on the donkey and stuff like that. It was fun! You can modernize it a bit and make a board with some holes in it to toss bean bags in (you can paint it with Barbie on it before you cut the holes - I'm sure someone sells a stencil if you do not trust your painting skills), make a Barbie birthday cake (the one with the doll in it), get a pinata with Barbie on it. Or you could do a cooking party and have the children make their own snacks. When the children first arrive have them color their own aprons. Before hand, write each child's name on an apron (I think they sell these at a craft store) so all you have to do is guide the child to the table so they can start working on their apron. Once they are finished with their aprons, give them each a little ball of dough for mini pizzas and have some toppings availble for them to put on their pizzas. While the pizzas are cooking, they can play. After they eat their pizzas, it is time for presents and then cake and maybe the pinata.

If I think of anything else, I will let you know!

Hi S., we had a very similar party for my daughter's fourth. We actually started out at a neighborhood park but ended up here at our place due to rain! But it turned out to be really fun. We had kids of very similar ages (big family full of cousins), and the most fun we had was playing a game called Hullaballoo. I highly recommend this game for all ages. You can pick it up at Target, probably. (we borrowed it) The older kids loved making up stuff to do. You do not have to use the enclosed machine (with a recorded voice on it) -- the older kids will quickly get the hang of it and will have fun making it up. Enjoy!

Too funny - my daughter turning 5 this month also wanted a Barbie party - it's been rough. The thing she wanted most of all was a Barbie cake, where the cake is her dress and then you stick a real Barbie standing up in the middle of the cake. Luckily my sister-in-law has the mold to make the cake, but I think you should be able to find it online somewhere. As for games, we are going to blow up a picture of my daughter in a 'Barbie' type outfit with a crown and then make some additional crowns to play, pin the crown on the 'Barbie' (sort of lame, but Barbie is HARD, huh?) For crafts, all I am doing is getting some white craft bags and having them decorate with Barbie stickers, crayons, foam letters for their names. Then to fill their decorated treat bags I have purchased Barbie fruit snacks (Jewel has them), glow braclets (Micheals has them 12 for $1), some beads/braclets (party stores sell them in bunches), then I think we'll have some little pads of paper & matching pencils (again, the party store). Factory Card and party outlet also has a 30% off coupon that you can get online and print it out to take to the store - good from the 14th to the 20th I think. We're also going to have some dress-up stuff available for free play - and I was thinking about having a fashion show with the kids??? That's all I had for now. Hope some of those things help! ~ K.
