I have 2 birthday's coming up this summer, one for a 8 year old and another for a 5 year old. We have done the bowling, swimming, Libby Lu's party's before. I was thinking Build a Bear for the 5 year old but with the Independence Center location not having a party room, did any of your kids have a good time with this. As for the 8 year old I am not sure what to do. It seems that we are doing the same thing over and over. Please help!

What can I do next?

One of my girls' favorite parties EVER was when we had a "carnival". We made games, had tickets, prizes, ballons, icecream cone cupcakes. We had it all outside. It was fairly cheap to do beacuse we made the games, bean bag toss, 2 liter bottle knock over games, balloon darts, basketball, duckpond, ect. It kept ALL of the kids entertained, thier siblings too. All ages had fun and the parents got involved as well. I will definately be doing it again! You can get tickets and "prizes" really cheap through some place like Oriental Trading Company or the dollar store.

We just went to a Build a Bear party @ West County Mall. They do not have a party room either. But the party was a blast and afterward, we all walked to the food court to have juice, cupcakes and to open presents. The parents spoke to the food court manager who allowed them to put balloons on the chairs ahead of time to reserve the tables. It worked out great and my child loved the fact that we got an $8 coupon from Build a Bear so she could go back and buy an outfit for her bear after the party.

For the five year old, if build a bear doesn't work out, and you're up to a little work yourself, you could throw a picnic style party with lots of friends and games. The 8 year old, maybe she'd like an old-fashioned slumber party. I provide theme parties (your home or venue) in St. Louis (Once Upon A Bash.com), so I may have some options that would either interest you, or spark your imagination to creat something on your own. Best of luck!

I knew someone that did a tea party theme for her daughter's 5th birthday. The girls came dressed up and wore gloves. Drank from little china tea cups..lace on the table..tiny snadwiches..the whole bit. My daughter's two and I can't wait to do something like that. I was also thinking about doing build a bear for her too when she gets older.

My girls (5 and 8) are obsessed with candy. (Probably because they're only allowed one piece a day!) I've noticed all of these hip "candy bars" (not like Snickers bar, like martini bar) at high-end weddings on TV lately. I am thinking of throwing a candy party. It would feature a favorite color of candy in jars or bins with scoops and bags like a candy store. Decorations should match. We'll play candy-themed music for the kids to dance to (Twister would be good here, too) and do some sort of candy related craft. (Either make a sculpture out of the candy or actually make candy - chocolate dipped pretzels rolled in sprinkles.) For the cake, make or order a regular cake and then press candy in frosting all over the cake (I actually had one of these as a child - very rad). The kids will think you are the coolest Mom and you send all the candy home with them as favors!

Summer time is always good for going to the park. Depending on the park they usually have a pavillion by the playground (for your entertainment).
If you like themes. How about a 50's party: girls dress in poodle skirts, white shirts, ponytails and tennis shoes or capri jeans/pants. Boys dress in jeans rolled up, white t-shirts and tennis shoes. You can purchase decorations from Oriental Trading. Server Hamburgers\hot dogs and fries and ice cream soda's\floats and play music from that generation and if you know someone that has a motorcycle you could have them come over and all the kids can get their picture taken on the cycle. It's fun when everyone dresses the theme.
Another theme is a luau again Oriental Trading has decorations.

I think the Build A Bear Workshop at Zona Rosa in the Northland has a party room next door. If I recall right, I saw it was a pizza place and they had some kind of discount worked out between the two for a party.

I have an 8 year old and for her 8 birthday we had a slumber party and the girls had a blast. It amazing how much fun they have. Then another slumber she went the mother took them to a place where they all got to dress up and put make up on and then take pictures. If this something you may be interested in I get more information. Best of luck.

My daughter's 5th birthday party was over the summer. It was our best party yet and the kids had a blast! My husband owns MVP Sports in Greenwood so we used Layton's Dance studio as the venue for free, but I know they rent it out for parties and I'm sure others do too. We invited boys and girls for a 12 Dancing Princesses Party. They all came dressed for a ball (princess dresses, dance costumes and the boys in their dancing shoes). We created a cd through I-Tunes that had "We're So Glad You're Here" Disney song and many other Disney, Barbie and ballet songs. The gift for everyone at the party was the cd and a balloon. The kids danced, then we played musically chairs, then did cake and then opened presents and then played musical chairs and danced again. It was simple, but we made everyone feel fancy with dressing up, the music, balloons and 12 Dancing Princess banner decorations. Have fun with her party!
