My Daughter's first birthday is coming up. I am not sure that we are really doing a "Theme" or not. Do you think a Cake or Cupcakes are better? With Cupcakes you could do both Chocolate and White; however you can't really decorate them "cute".
If we do a cake, do any of you have any websites that you would recommend for looking for cake "theme" idea's?

Central Market can put together a cupcake-cake! It's so cute. My friend had her daughter's 1st cake done this way. The cupcakes were laid out in the shape of her child's first initial. The icing was smoothed over all of them to make it appear as one large "A". It was adorable and very easy to serve!
For my daughters first birthday we made her her own personal butterfly cake which was extremely easy. found the template online. We then made cupcakes for the guests and had a sundae bar with different types of icecreams and toppings. Good luck and Happy 1st!
We bought my son his own little cake (we had a 1st birhtday bear theme) and cup cakes for the guests in the shape of a bear. I didn't have to worry about cutting and dishing up cake while trying to watch and take pics of my son eating his cake (and I got to clean him up while the guests simply walked over and grabbed a cup cake). We got ours at Wal-Mart, but all the groc. stores do them now.

I made my DD's first birthday, as tradition would have it in my family. It was healthy and sugar free, so of course, I didn't want to serve it to the guests. ;-)
So, I had a cupcake decorating party. I ordered undecorated white and chocolate cupcakes, and had all the fixin's, even dirt and worms, for the kids to decorate with. I put down a floor covering, and had them decorate at the table. Then I took each kid's photo with their 'creation' for my DD's scrapbook. The kids had a blast!
I also made a different cake for the adults which looked like a stack of birthday gifts. Cute. Check out this website...

We did a traditional cake for my son's bday and that was a lot of fun, but it was more for the guests. We also got him a smash cake. I think we'll go with cupcakes next year. We got our cake from Creative Memories Inc. in Hurst. They are absolutely wonderful cakes, very good icing, and very economical. They do cupcakes too...$7.50 for a dozen. I was gonna make the same suggestion! We have done the cupcake cakes a few times and it it sooooo much easier! Less clean up and no fights over who's piece is bigger! ;o)They make them in all sorts of cute things from cats to cactus's! I am actually doing a similar thing for my daughter's 2nd. Since we are going to Let's Jump, we are doing a frog theme and I am making frog cupcakes that I saw on brightideas.com.
This might not work for your daughter's 1st birthday but maybe for other moms out there. My niece was not a cake person - and never wanted any at parties, so for her last birthday (her 5th), when my sister asked what kind of cake she wanted, she said she didn't want cake, she wanted donuts. So my sister went to Krispy Kreme and bought glazed donuts and arranged them on a cake platter with candles. They were a HUGE hit, even all the adults had donuts (she bought a couple dozen mixed variety for the adults) and out of 7 dozen, at the end of the day she only had about 3 or 4 donuts left. I thought it was such a great idea and everyone enjoyed it.
If you're thinking of doing cupcakes yourself, note that it takes much longer to icing a bunch of cupcakes. And you can make them cute with those candy molds. I did cupcakes for my daughter's first birthday and they turned out really cute. I got the pink candy and used little butterfly molds, then stuck a butterfly on each cupcake. However, it took way too long to do the icing. I opted for ordering a cake for my next child's first birthday!
It's already been suggested but I'll vote for cupcake-cakes too. We've done that the last two years for my daughter (3rd & 4th bday) and it's awesome. Walmart even does them and they taste great and are like $12! Then you can order extra's to match if you need them. You can do 1/2 choc 1/2 white too.
Very easy and nothing to cut. Add to that ice cream cups and voila, a very easy bday :)!!
We had cake for my daughter's first birthday, but it ended up being more for the guests than for her; she barely touched it! But I've decided upon a cupcake-cake for her next birthday. If you go to the grocery store and look at their options, at least Tom Thumb and Kroger are now making a cake where they push a bunch of cupcakes together until they touch and then slather one layer of frosting across all of them, supplying one solid surface for decorating. I'm sure the pulling-apart process is messy, but for a 2-year-old party, that could be fun. :-)

I just used a cupcake cake at my 2 year old's party and LOVED IT!! It is so easy. We got our's at Walmart and I was very plesantly surprised, it was delicious!! The cake we got had 24 cupcakes and they have them in tons of styles!!
Whichever you decide for the party guests. I recommned that you get a personal cake for your birthday girl. They are about the size of 2 or 3 cupcakes. The additional few dollars was worth every penny when my daughter dove face first into it!! She was able to do whatever she wanted with "HER" cake!!

For both of my boys we had a "theme" and had a cake especially decorated to match. A friend of mine had Walmart make up a cupcake cake in the shape of a lady bug one year for her daughter. It really turned out cute. Also, I'm not sure where you live in the area but Lakeview Bakery on Lakeview Parkway in Rowlett does adorable cupcakes and they are really pretty inexpensive for all of the detail. They also do great looking cakes (not necessarily theme related, more whimsical) that taste great. Hope this helps and good luck on the birthday planning!

Just wanted to let you know that although I normally do not like store bought cakes or cupcakes, we (meaning my 6 brothers, sisters and their families) have figured out that we really like Tom Thumbs cakes. They make very cute cupcakes shaped into a cake (made to look like a butterfly or anything else you can think of) They are super cute, but theydo use lots of icing, and usually bright colors. I believe that the icing is sprayed with color after the white icing is put on, but I am not sure. Anyway that gets my vote, I am tired of always making the cupcakes for family parties anyway!!
For my son's first birthday we served cupcakes to guests and made a small cake for him to "play" in. We got a bit creative by filling ice cream cones 3/4 of the way full with cake batter, baking them, and then icing them with a cake decorator. When his guests were ready for cake, I set out candies for them to decorate their ice-cream cone cupcakes with. It was a blast and the little ones were able to hold on to their treats better with less mess. Setting the cones in a muffin pan surrounded by a few beans will help keep them upright while baking. Bake according to the cake mix package.
I did my son's first b-day in the baby winnie the pooh theme. I bought all the stuff at Party City and you they have a website on the back of their invitations that have all themes and where you can get a matching cake. You will only have their "1st" b-day once, so make it a "1st" b-day theme. I use the Target in Mansfield for all of my cakes and for the babies 1st, if you order your cake their and tell them it is their 1st then they will give you a 6 inch round cake FREE decorated to match. That is what we did to let him dig his hands and play and get messy. Then we had "Grandma" clean him up!!!
