Birthcontrol Pill Causing Menopausal Symptoms

OK, months ago I was put on Nortrel Birthcontrol pill in hopes it would prolong me from having a hysterectomy because of Endometriosis. My husband had a vasectomy so I am NOT on the pill for actual birthcontrol reasons.

ANYWAY..my doctor told me to skip the placebo's for three months so that I have a period only every 3 months. As he warned it took many trys before my body actually let me go 3 month w/ out a period.

2 weeks ago it was time to have my period and HOLY COW!!!!!!!! I had the mother of all migraines the day I started (get headaches and migraines before I start anyway..but this was insane!) I started having BAD mood swings, severe night sweats and hot flashes (I'm VERY cold natured) so I knew something probably pill related was going on.

Called OB/GYN he said I really need to have fewer periods so I need to try and stay on the period only 3 month thing. He said my estrogen is dropping way low (like menopause) so I have to wear a patch 2 days before last period and he is going to give me medicine for migraines obviously brought on by my hormones.

SORRY for long history...but has anyone had similar menopausal symptoms from the pill, has ANYONE wore this patch, or any other thoughts short of hysterectomy!

Also, I just got off my period and I'm having MASSIVE CRAMPS like I'm getting ready to start. WHAT THE HECK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I am on the pill and it has made things worse. I guess it could have been the pill, but I was on BC before my kids and never had issues...I really think it's because I skipped placebos and went 3 months w/ out period. I actually think the symptoms are worse than the Endometriosis. I had surgery before for Endometriosis (symptoms got really bad)and it always comes back so I am going to get off the pill for a while and tough it out. If the Endo symptoms get bad again, I'll have surgery again or consider hysterectomy. I'm only 31 so hopefully I can hold off before I make any huge decisions.

I was just wondering why you don't want togo through with the Hysterectomy. I am 27 and had one 10 months ago for the same reasons and I could not be happier I am not on any med and feel better than I have in a long time. I would be more than willing to talk to you more about this. ____@____.com. L.

If you think it is the medicine causeing hte headaches that is so bad and everything else you could always have your doc put you on birthcontol. yes i realize you cant get pg but you can do the skip period thing on those as well and it shouldnt cause those symptoms. Heck i was on birthcontrol and had to skip several months just to get it to where i wouldnt have a period on my wedding day and a weekend trip "our honeymoon" the month after.

good luck

There is a site.... www.hystersisers.com that deals with pre-andpost hysterectomy issues. There are many MANY women out there who have gone through what you are going through and I am sure they would have a lot to say. Check them out, they helped me alot 3 years ago when I had to have a hysterectomy, and they have helped a friend out who is trying to avoid the hysterectomy. Good luck and if theres anything I can help with let me know!

I can't say anything about the pre menopausal symptoms but I can tell you I get massive migraines from my cycle. I am on preventative meds because of them. I was on the pill continuously, and my Dr had me take it for 4 months straight. Then the green pill week to try to get some relief… I am currently not on any BC b/c I am pregnant with kiddo # 3 and still getting those nasty migraines. Its so wonderful how hormones work right???

Good Luck!

Dear M.,

I understand the migraine thing completly! Since my daughter was born I have had trouble finding the right prescription. I was on trithasil prior to her birth, but I have been through three medications since her birth trying to find one that doesn't give me raging hormone migraines, mood swings, and PMS three to four days prior to starting my cycle. I originally went on the pill to prevent these problems as well as vomitting and horrible cramps when I was twenty-two. I'm not pre menopausal or facing a hysterectomy, but the other problems are similar. I truely feel for you and hope you can work with the OB to get some relief!

Best Wishes,

J. N.
