Birth Control Suggestions?

It's been a while since I was actively trying NOT to get pregnant and I know there are now a lot of options out there for birth control. Are you using something you are particularly happy with, or do you have any warnings about ones you've had bad experiences with? I know it is a very personal decision but I'd like to get some feedback. Many years ago I was on a low dose pill and it was okay but I think I'd prefer something I don't have to think about every day. Thanks!

Hi G.,

I really love the NuvaRing. I have severe chronic migraines and the pill always made them worse, my skin was allergic to the birth control patch, and I was a basket case from the shot. IUDs scare me too much. Something about having something banging around in my uterus seems to be counterintuitive if I wanted to get pregnant again. The NuvaRing is also the first birthcontrol I've used with hormones in it that doesn't make my sex drive die out completely or make me gain weight. It works immediately. It didn't interfere in the slightest with trying to get pregnant when we were ready. All I had to do was take it out. We were pregnant within 6 weeks of stopping the ring, so it apparently didn't interfere with my ovulation cycle much. I'd been using it for two years, I'd been on various birthcontrol nonstop for 15 years at the time. So, I would suggest giving it a test drive.

After being off of the pill to get pregnant, I enjoyed how I felt off of it. I began using a machine that is not marketed or sold in the US. It is called the Persona. It is very similar to an ovulation predictor machine, but instead of telling you when to have intercourse to get pregnant, it tells you when not to have intercourse b/c you are ovulating. You can read more about it or purchase it online through the Garden Pharmacy, which is located in England. Let me know if you need more info or have any questions.

I recommend you not take birth control pills because:

They get in the way of absorbing vitamins and minerals, can make you very deficient and cause all kinds of disease down the road. An example of just one of the vitamins it will deplete is magnesium , which will cause premature wrinkles, headaches, increased blood sugar and blood pressure levels, changes in nerve and muscle tone and function, and can soften bones. Over 300 enzymes need magnesium to function.
Also depletes vit b, copper, manganese, and others

it will cause an overgrowth of yeast in your body, which can and will promote cancer.

They are estrogenic, which also can promote reproductive type cancers.

Hi G.,

I love Seasonique birth control pills. It is a great pill because you only get your period 4 times a year and its very light when you do. You get it at the end of third month. The drawback is that you have spotting for a while until you get used to it. But I didn't have any issues with weightgain, bloating or irritability like some other BC pills. Good luck with your search.

After the birth of my daughter, I got the Mirena IUD and I am very happy with it. There was spotting for awhile, but now it is gone and we don't have to think about birth control at all for five years. My OB/Gyn said it is more effective than tubal ligation and it is even safe for women who have never had a baby. It also has no effect on milk supply, weight, or mood.

I know several people have responded to you already, and also have said this, but I had Mirena put in after my second son and love it! I've had it for close to a year now with no issues. You don't have to think about it, I've gotten shorter and lighter periods, and if I decide I want another one later, it's easy to take out and we can start trying right away for another one. I have used pills in the past but could not be more happy with Mirena!

theres always mixed reviews on this, but i maintain my stance, i have had the IUD for 3 years and it is great. i don't have to think about it at all, it has caused me no problems, and there are no hormones. (mine is the one with copper). it prevents eggs from implanting, it may not prevent fertilization, so if you are hypersensitive about the moment of life abortion thing, maybe it's not for you, but otherwise...it is a choice i have yet to regret.
sex life is great, periods are normal and regular...

G. ~ I REALLY liked the merena IUD - it had a very low dose of a topical hormones that don't enter your blood stream, so they don't cause mood swings etc. It worked out really well for me also cause I had 2 very light periods when I first got it, and then didn't have one again until I had it removed when we were trying to have another. Another great thing about it was that it didn't have to get out of my system or anything. I had it taken out, had one period, got pregnant! Thought it would take a few months, but it didn't!.....

I highly recommend the Mirena IUD. It is great not worrying about taking pills everyday. and i no onger hav periods to deal with. My OB said this side effect wont happen for everyone but most will have much lighter periods, and mine just happen to go away all together. It is a great opion u should definatly look into.

I could not be happier with the copper IUD. There are no hormones; it lasts for 10 years; and once it's in you don't have to think about it. I highly recommend it.

I had the copper IUD after the birth of my first son, and I loved it. There are no hormones, so when we tried for our second child I didn't have to wait to figure out my cycle, and I got pregnant right away.

I think periods are lighter with the Mirena IUD, but if you want a truly hormone free form of birth control, I would recommend the copper IUD.

Are you married or with a committed life partner? Are you sure you only want one child? If the answer to both these questions is yes, perhaps your husband/partner would be willing to get a vasectomy. That's what my husband did. It was a pretty minor procedure with a few days of soreness. Not having to worry and not having to put any hormones in my body has been wonderful.

If you don't want to think about it daily, consider nuvaring, IUD, or implant into arm. Your doctor can give more info. Latter two last a few years.
