I just had baby number 3 four months ago and do not desire to get back on birth control pills. my doctor recommended I try the IUD Mirena. Looking for advice if you have ever used this birth control device and especially if you were breastfeeding. Cant find much for reviews on women who used Mirena who where breastfeeding at the time & side effects etc. Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

I've had Mirena for 3.5 years now and love it. I got it 8 weeks postpartum, my daughter was exclusively breastfed for 6 months and I weaned her at 19 months. I did not think it interfered with my milk production.

The one downside I find with it, is that it has none of the "pleasant" side effects of the pill. While on the pill my skin was relatively nice, I've always had issues with mild acne, which unfortunately isn't helped by the low hormones in Mirena.

I know a lot of women complain about weight gain on it, but again, I have not had any issues that can't be attributed to too much junk food and too little exercise.

I will get another one when this one is up next year (they are good for 5 years). Good luck.

have NOT tried that. Took the pills for years and years though and did not want back on them either. I started the Nuva Ring 4 years ago and never looked back. Super easy, can't feel it. Doesn't get lost. No side effects.... except that I no longer have periods! Not menopause..not unsafe... not scary or bad.... its just that it thins the lining down so much that in my case, there is nothing left for the monthly. LOVE this form of BC. Definitely recommend it. Pretty sure I started after I stopped BF.... but you would just need to ask your doc about that.

I haven't, but I know several who have and in almost all of them that thing has managed to get "lost". Best wishes. :)

Hi L.! I'm sending you a link from WebMd that entails the side effects of Mirena. I believe it will answer a lot of your questions about it along with those who've taken this.
Me however, I have never used Mirena. I wish I could help out more.
Have a great day!

I used it while breastfeeding for about 5 months and I thought it worked great. As far as side-effects, I had some moodiness (but what new mom doesn't!), I had more back pain and cramping that I used to have on the pill, but no periods. I also had some slight discomfort due to what I'm guessing was a PH imbalance, without giving TMI.

Overall, I would probably use it again as it's so easy.

Hello! I currently have Mirena and have since my son was 6 weeks old (he is now 3.5yrs). I breastfed until his first birthday with no problems at all. I had an ample milk supply and it didnt change with my IUD implant.

Side effects: Initial period and cramping, and light spotting at first. Now I dont have a period at all. I shed hair for about 3 months after I got it, but it wasnt enough that you could tell from looking and it did stop. Just extra hair in hair brush.

I personal love having mine and wouldnt change it. Its easy, no hassle and best off no periods!

Good luck

I had it put in 6 weeks after having my daughter. She EBF for 13 months. I had no problems at all. Loved it. No period at first for me. Then I would get some light spotting for a day or so. I had no side effects at all.
I ended up getting remarried and had it taken out 2 years after putting it in. It took us awhile to get pregnant but we did and now we have a 10 month old son together.

You are going to get many answers to your question, some with good experience and some with bad. You will have to research and decide what is best for you.

i am breast-feeding and pumping exclusively and i have the mirena. This is my 2nd one, I got one between my first and 2nd baby (5.5yrs). I love the mirena. I got the first one after I stopped breastfeeding (I hadn't really thought about it or considered it before that, so it wasn't because I was breastfeeding) and this one at my 6wk check-up. I bleed for a lot longer after having this one in, now bleeding with the mirena is not like a period, I use a pantyliner a day and that's sufficient, it's mostly blood when wiping, but never the less, it was like 3.5 months. With my last one, I bleed for ~2 months or less and then once it stopped my period was discharge with a pink hue that's it. It has not effected my milk supply at all (unless it increased it, which I never considered until this moment). My milk supply is WAY more with this baby, but I noticed no change once I got it.

I also notice the increase hair loss during the first 4-6months with both IUDs, it did stop and never did I see an effect in my hair. My ob says it can make your hair thicker and so you lose more, which is why you don't notice spots on your head. Good luck

PS...everyone I know that took the mini-pill, the one you have to take if you're breastfeeding, got pregnant while on it. That may be a weird thing, and I don't know that many that have used it, but the 5 women I know who took it all got pregnant while using it, so there was no way I was using that!!

Good luck!!
