We may be moving to Biloxi Mississippi, near Keesler Air Force Base. Does anyone live there, or lived there in the past?
I don't know anything about the area, but some of the reviews I have read for apartments are down right scary. There was one review that said several shootings happened on the property, and a woman was killed right in the parking lot. Other apartments don't have much better reviews. Is that normal for the area close to Keesler, or are people only posting the worst reviews?
Any info about the area would be helpful.
Thanks in advance.
Thank you for the answers ladies!
We thought about using a real estate agent, but that is too expensive. We've been looking at apartments online and have found several we think are nice in our price range. The only problem is knowing what is a good area and what is a bad area.
We are mostly interested in the area around the coliseum. There are a couple of apartments near there that we like, but are concerned about safety.
April C., I would be grateful for any information you can get from your buddy and pass on to me.

An old highschool buddy lives in Biloxi, working in a casino. I shot him a note...re: basic safety. If you have any other specific questions, message me and I'll ask him. I've only played there as a teenager and it was fun, haven't been as a parent or looking at it through "living there" eyes.
I'll message you when I hear back from him. In the meantime, the previous post was right: tell a reputable realtor what you're looking for and ask her to avoid showing you homes in areas you'd rather avoid. (Me, I shop schools and other specifics that are important to me-church, access to recreation, etc- and then only search homes in the area of the map that I have what I'm looking for).
In response to using a real estate agent, my daughter has used apartment agents (of some kind) twice to find apartments.... she never pays anything, as far as I know....I think they get a fee from the apartment complex? I may be totally off-base, though. They usually show her several in her price range, finding apartments with her requirements (ground floor, for example, because she has a piano). She usually looks on Craigslist for listing agents and goes from there.
I don't know much about Biloxi, but my brother and his wife live in Gulfport because he is stationed at Keesler. They absolutely love it and feel very safe there. They just bought their second home recently. I agree with another post-er on here that you should contact a real estate agent in the area. They can tell you which areas are better than others. Good luck!

I moved to the MS Gulf Coast in 2002 from New York City. Started out in Bay St. Louis, then moved to Gulfport. Met my husband there (Seabee) and only left after Katrina since my DH got out of the Navy. We left in 2006 and this month are moving back, and I can't wait! I absolulty love the Coast. I have 2 boys (1 and 3) and am looking forward to all the things there are to do with them there (beach, playgrounds, children's museum, marine museum, water park, family fun center, just to name some stuff). Biloxi, Gulfport, etc are like any other place. Some neighborhoods are better than others. Being at Keesler, you can look at Gulfport, Biloxi and Ocean Springs to live in and still be close to base. If you want to PM me I'd be more than happy to answer any questions you may have and help you out in any way I can.

Could you get in touch with a real estate agent there to find you a good area? Most cities have some bad areas, you might need help to avoid them.
