Bikes & Bike Carriers for Kids

We have been in Colorado almost a year now and are ready to buy some bikes. We have no experience in this so bare with me and keep the snickering to a minimum:) Other then taking a spin class when I arrived I have not been on a bike since I was a kid. That being said I need some advice on where to buy bikes; for me, a 16 year old boy, a 13 year old girl, and I also need advice on a carrier for my son who just turned 3. I have seen carriers that ride behind the bike right behind the person, the ones that attach to the wheels and are on the ground and enclose the kids, and I have even seen the ones where the child rides in a carrier in front of the parent. Any comments on types/kinds not to buy are helpful also. We are not cyclists so we only are looking for recreational bikes that are comfortable. Thank you in advance for your help.

What can I do next?

If you're north of Denver near me I can recommend Golden Bear Bike Shop in Broomfield. Lots of comfy commuter style bikes, and cruisers...not to mention cross-overs, mountain bikes, and roadies!
The newest child carrier I've seen is a WeeHoo, kind of like Trek's Tagalong (a half bike that sits behind parent bike), but the WeeHoo is better I think. I'm excited to try it out.
We currently have a cheap trailer, which has works okay, but hasn't held up under heavy use, and I know it's not super comfortable to sleep in---my daughter gets bored & tired back there.
The seats that sit behind are fine for a while, but soon enough your youngest's knees will be pushing on your behind, and he might be too heavy already to comfortably have him up front.
Let the teenagers pick their bikes, and I recommend the WeeHoo for the 3 yr old as it'll be great up until he's 6-ish.
Great job mommin' & welcome to Colorado!

Hi A..

My husband gets all of his bike stuff at Performance Bikes. They are total experts on everything bikes. If they are a little pricey, you can have them educate you then keep an eye out on Craigslist for something used.

Good luck!

We love Arvada Bicycles at 66th and Wads. Very nice, knowledgeable people. If you're buying bikes for the entire family, beware of sticker shock. You may want to shop around a little to see what suits you and then go to Craigslist. If money is no object then hey, go wild, have fun :-)

For carriers; I've tried all three. Since you're not a strong rider I will suggest that you only go with a trailer (Burley, Step 2, etc) that is a separate attachment on the back of the bike. The ones that attach directly onto your bike, and not in their own trailer, can be very unstable feeling and will throw you off. And if they sneeze, get scared, or otherwise throw your balance you many not be able to recover and will end up tumbling with them. With a trailer the bike may fall, but the trailer will stay upright and facing forward. GL!! Have fun!
