Hi! I have a 13 month old and was considering getting him a helmet and putting him on the back of my bike in a baby seat that is on it, but was not sure if he is too young for that. When is a good age, if this is too early? Thanks in advance!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for your insight!! I will be looking into possibly finding him a trailer or a safe helmet. We'll just be riding on our long drive way if anything (it is about 1/4 a mile). Thanks again!!

I think he may be a little to young still , I don't think you can even get helmets for that young a child. You'd be best going to a local bike shop and talking to them , I see a lot of people on the cycle track with babies in the pull along cars rather than on a seat on the back of the bike , he may need to be around 2 before he can go on the back of your bike.

Hope this helps.

hi-
My husband and I love to bike. He's an avid mountain biker and road cyclist. I would actually recommend a trailer more than a bike seat b/c its more stable. We actually bungied our 3 mos old in it in his carseat when he was very young. I'll admit I was a little worried at first since I'm sure that is not listed as a preferred way to take your child on a bike ride but that kid and bikeseat were in there solid and he slept the whole time. My fear with a bike seat is that if you fall the baby falls too. In a trailer you can fall and the trailer can still remain upright. My opinion is that a trailer is safer because it doesn't really change the center of gravity of your bike. but if you are heart set on using a bike seat and the baby wears a helmet (which i think in that case would be a must) AND you are a solid rider why not? Nothing like a little fresh air.

Everywhere I have seen it is reccomended after 12 months.......so I think your son is just fine. I have a friend who is getting a trailer for his daughter who just turned 1 last week.He says he does not trust himself with her on the bike seat.

If he fits in the seat well, is safely harnessed, and you're not going mountain biking, it's probably fine. Some 13 month olds have great trunk control and wont' slouch in a seat. It's not much different than a car seat, probably safer in that you're less likely to get into a serious accident to begin with. Will you be on a bike path or in a park setting, or on the side of the road? Those would be my main concerns.
