Big Lump Under Breast Bone, Please Help

I got very sick this weekend with a very high fever and I developed a big lump under by breast bone, it's about 3 and 1/2 inches all around. My husband says that it looks like I have a pregnancy tummy under by bra line. It's not hard, but its very sensitive to touch and it hurts the worse when I walk, it feels like I'm carrying around a big bowling ball. I went to the doctor and he just listened in on that ear and then said the lump was nothing. I had to get an antibiotic shot and meds for my fever, he said my blood results showed I had a bad infection. Apparently the shot and meds have worked because I'm here writing right now, but the lump has just stayed the same. I'm just worried that it's going to grow or that it's never to go away. Should I calm down and just wait until my infection is done with and see if the lump goes away? Has anyone else ever had something like this happen to them? I'm really worried and I would really appreciate some calming words.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It's funny, I'm not sure how my illness happened so quick. One minute I was okay ,then next minute I was laying in bed not being able to get up. I keep trying to think back at how I was able to get such a terrible bacterial infection because I'm the type of person that I'm always washing my hands, I carry hand sanitizer with me everywhere I go, and I just try to be very careful. It might have been something bad that I ate. Well, I did finish my antibiotics and the big lump went down, very happy about that, thanks to all who replied.

It maybe a cyst or boil. I think u should wait and see how u respond to the meds. If it is still there when the meds r gone and ur Dr thinks it's nothing I would get a second opinion. sincerely J.

Get a second opinion. It certainly won't hurt to let another doctor take a look.

Peace of mind is everything. Go to another doctor. Tell him/her about it and what action the other doctor took and let them know you were not comfortable with what the other doctor said. I don't believe in waiting. It's your body and only you know when something is not right. Don't be hesistant in going to another doctor. Call today. It's probably nothing but go get it checked so you won't worry.

I would suggest an internist. Call and make the appt. Also check webmd.com ; not in lieu of the appt but right after you make the call.

Hi C.,
I'll bet it's scary to find a bump anywhere on your body. It's very likely that you have a boil or a cyst that developed while you were so sick. Between having a fever and a infection sometimes this happens. I would continue to "watch" it and look for it increasing in size or pain. It should go down with time and with the fact that you have received proper care for infection. If not, continue seeking medical attention until answers are given. Not to put down your doctor but if your not content with the answers or lack of them you can and should seek a 2nd, 3rd or however many doctors opinions it takes. :)

Hi C.. I understand your fear. See if you can search the internet. I don't know how you would google that since you don't really have a word for the lump, but maybe this can at least ease your mind a little. God bless. :) C.

I'm sorry you are sick. How many days has it been since the antibiotic shot and start of oral meds? I would give it at least 3 days to notice any improvement in the lump. If it still looks the same to you go back to the doctor. Also, it is red and hard? Tender to touch? Does it feel hot? these are signs of infection and could be an abcess (boil). I think if your MD blows you off again you should, for your peace of mind, go get another opinion. Hope you're better soon. M.
