My son learned about bey blades from friends in school. He is in an afterschool program where he is with older kids so I'm not sure how old the boys were who exposed him to these. He's asked for them for Christmas. Any mamas out there familiar with them who can give me some guidance as to whether these are appropriate for a 5y.o. Thanks so much in advance!!

My son was 5 last Christmas and that is all he wanted so over the past year he has aquired a ton of them. When he has friends over or cousins they spend a lot of time battling.

I work at a Boys and Girls Club whose members are at least 6. The younger boys (grades 1 -3) seem to play with them the most. I don't really see any issue with it for a 5 year old. It is a pull-cord type top that spins around in an arena (plastic bowl). The tops of them are metal and interchangable (I think). They put 2 or 3 in at one time to knock out the other guys. Pretty easy to use, operate, play with, and don't seem to be violent or cause injury. From what I've seen. :)

Boy do I know about Beyblades. My son played with them when he was younger and loves to collect them. They are nothing more than little metal and plastic tops. What makes them different is that they rely on the laws of physics. Each top has different qualities that will make them either spin longer as in the stamina type, spin faster and irrattically as in the attack type, and there's a balance type I don't quite understand yet. They also come with different names and designs. (Rock Aries, Storm Capricorn, Flame Bixus, etc.) You can get the kind that he can take apart to make his own customized Beyblade or you can get the light-up kind that doesn't come apart but looks cool. (My son only likes the ones you can take apart.) Why would they want to take them apart to make their own customized Beyblade? Some parts create different spinning patterns. There are little metal wheels on them and some wheels are light and some are heavy...agiain it's physics. They have different tips that they spin on. (Flat, pointy, soft, etc.) The soft rubber tipped ones wear out faster, but create a nice flowery attack pattern. There's even a Beyblade with a tip that you can change positions to make it spin normal or jump. It gets really complicated, but it can stretch your child's thinking and imaginations. There's even a Beyblade chat room. Some of them are teenagers and some are only little 5, 6, and 8 year olds. There are some safety concerns to think about such as:
1. They have small parts, so you want to make sure babies, toddlers, and animals are out of the room he plays them in. Make sure to clean every thing up. A simple tackle box or tool box is great for carrying them in.
2. Do not use a wok as an arena! We did it once/twice. Those things really fly out of woks and spark.
3. Keep in mind that the speed of the Beyblade is also controled by the strength of the child. If your child is strong, It's going to fly if you get a Japanese arena/stadium. If you get a Hasbro one....No problem. Hasbro arenas are wimpy. Get the cheap big plastic ones instead of the boxed set. (More room and more fun.)
4. Always play Beyblade with your child if the child is younger than 9/10 yrs. as a safety precaution.

They are a top with a thing to spin them in. I am really hoping you have no idea what they are because otherwise I can't figure out what you are worried about.

My kids have been into BeyBlades for a loooong time. They were five and younger when we bought them. They are fun and get a group of kids all "battling" together. It is all the rage right now.

The age specifications on the boxes are for older kids...but we got them anyway. Just teach your boy how to handle them safely...and to not put your face down by the battle arena or area where they are playing and he will be fine.

My vote is to buy him a few with a battle arena....it will make his eyes light up on Christmas morning. I say get the arena because it keeps the playing in a confined space and also he can store all the pieces in there.

Good luck and best wishes!!

My sons are 6 and 9 and they love their beyblades. There's nothing wrong with them and your 5 year old should enjoy them.

I think it's fine. Bey Blades are actually just an "action" type of spinning top. Toys like this have been around for 1000's of years - google it.
You might watch to watch a cartoon first to make sure you ok with that.......find it on tv or you tube.

my son is 4 and plays with them. I would just mark them with a marker where he knows they are so he knows which is his. I would only let him bring one. :)

My 4 and 6 year old LOVE them. They are getting the cage thing for Christmas, so right now they are happy with an empty Joe Corbi's box to battle.

I'd wait til he's older. There are so many toys for the younger set - the older set gets a little harder to buy for unless you are constantly buying more pokemon cards or yu-gi-oh cards.

Bey Blades are also a little difficult to handle. I'm not sure a 5 year old has the dexterity to use them as well as they need to for optimal play. Other moms might correct me if they think that's wrong. My kids had them around 8 and 9 years old.

My kids are 12 and 9 and we have about 12 or more of them between the 2 of them. They were "into" them the beginning of the year but now are not too interested in them anymore. I think they should be ok for the 5 yo, not sure, but it will have an age listed on the box. Good luck.
