Best Pouch Type Baby Carrier, Thoughts on New Native and Mamma's Milk?

Hi ladies,

I have started looking for a pouch sling type carrier. So far I have liked the non-adjustable New Native and the adjustable Mamma's Milk slings that look so fashionable. Of course the most important aspects of the sling will be ease of use and the ability to use it immediately for a newborn. I would love to hear your experiences with pouch type slings. Thanks :-)

What can I do next?

Hi E....I really love the Moby wrap. I got mine at Milagros (Killingsworth and NE 30th). I waited until my girl was born so that I could see what she liked. A couple of other mums on the block use the Moby too. What I love is that it's cozy and comfortable since it goes around both shoulders to spread out the weight evenly so it's easier on my back.

Check out Kangarookorner.com - stretchy fleech pouches (stretchy is KEY for ease of use and comfort of your baby) are great for the winter and they have summer fabrics too that you can even wear in the water. When there is an older sib that has needs too the sling is soooo important! A friend of mine just carried hr 3yo in hr fleece pouch when necessary at Disneyland but pocket slings are really best for the newborn-5mo period in my opinion. After that check out the Ergo baby carrier! In a pinch I carry my 3yo on my back in the ergo and my 1yo in my pocket sling.

GOOD LUCK!

I tried several wraps with my son before I found one I really liked. My absolute favorite was the Moby wrap. You can use it at all ages and it is basically a large piece of fabric you wrap around you body in different ways. It is very comfortable and it comes with an instruction booklet. I found it at Mother Nature's on the east side. They are friendly in the store and will help you put it on with your baby to try it out in the store. Good luck.

I love the fleece adjustable Kangaroo Korner sling. So easy to use and both my husband I used it with our daughter until she was two. I've seen them in a few Portland area stores too, but here is the link.

We used the Peanut Shell sling (www.goo-ga.com) when our baby was a newborn and he seemed to enjoy it. And just recently, around the seven month mark, we brought out the sling again to be used as a hip carrier. It works great.

I highly recommend you go somewhere that will allow you try a pouch or other carriers out first. My daughter hated the pouch and I wasn't crazy about it either. We tried everything and eventually discovered the Moby Wrap and fell in love with it! It is super comfortable for both parents and babies.

You can get a free lesson on how to wear them from me. I am a WAHM and I give free cloth diapering lessons and babywearing lessons. No obligation to buy anything!

Or you can contact NINO and see if there is a babywearing group nearby that can let you try a number of carriers as well.

Sincerely,
A.

Hi,

New Native did not work well for me as I couldn't get the right fit (at the time I think they only offered S, M and L, don't know if this is still the case). My fave was Hotslings (www.hotslings.com) but I think Mamma's Milk gets good reviews too. I recommend visiting www.thebabywearer.com for if you haven't already for info on baby carriers. They have tons of reviews and tips.

Good luck!

My favorite is the new native. We got one when our son was born because it was easier to carry him to the side and still carry my daughter in the other hand. We used it all the time even until he was close to two. It's great for carrying on your back when they're older or just taking some of the weight off when you're carrying on your hip.
