We are only English speakers in our house. Our 5 yr old has expressed an interest in learning Spanish. Since she's going to start half day kindergarten this Fall, we are considering signing her up for classes to "immerse" her in Spanish. What programs have really worked well for your young child? My only concern is that we don't have the ability to "talk" with her at home, although we of course will try our best to help her practice based off any workbooks or information she brings home.

We have a Language Stars by us. Is that a good program? It's very pricy, but wanted your reviews.

Thanks Mamas!

I don't have any insight into that program, but what we have done here to support my 2 1/2 year old in speaking German is to hire a German woman (recent college graduate) to come and play with him at home. She charges $10 an hour and comes twice a week for 2 hours each time.

All she does is speak German and play. I speak some German at home....he has picked up a lot and quickly. He will be going to an all German preschool in the fall, so I want him ready.

Look on Craigslist. There are lots of college age kids around who speak Spanish and are good enough with kids to play with your daughter in her own home while you are there. The nice thing about that is she gets one on one instruction and gets to play in a relaxed situation which is ideal for language learning.

Just a thought.

Good luck!

The spanish immersion programs at school are EXCELLENT. It's so popular here that my children are on a waiting list. I honestly think that is the best place to start. Learning a second language is priceless. Try doing her homework with her, and you will pick up on it yourself (kind of learning as she learns). Rosetta Stone is great for adults and children alike. Best wishes!

I have my daughter at Language Stars...she is in the Italian class and loves going every week even in the summer. It is costly but for us it is well worth it. They have a wonderful way of teaching through play and song. They give work sheets every week for you to reinforce information. Just noticed you are in Barrington. Talk to Joe Trsar he is great with information...he also speaks a little bit of all the languages and greets the children when they come in. My daughter is at this center during regular school year and her Italian teacher is Valeria. Right now I have her at the Naperville center for the summer and she really likes each teacher that she has.

Call the center and ask for a free class. See how your daughter does at the class and then go from there.

Good luck

I agree with Wendy, the school sounds good and I would do that, but also having a babysitter that comes to your house and play with your son is a good idea (plus, you get to learn too). Most babysitters charge around $10.
Buena suerte (good luck)
