This happen to me a few years ago. It really stinks! Now because of other issues with my knee, I ride a recumbent exercise bike. It would be completely tedious but I watch Netflix on my iPad and I love it.
I broke my L wrist last Monday and I am in the cast. The pain is not so bothersome anymore as long as I do not twist my wrist certain ways. Before I broke my wrist I was jogging and doing other exercises 3-4 times a week. With this cast on I am beginning to feel like the prisoner. I’d like to jog but I get sweaty and I cannot risk of sweating under the cast because I cannot wash it off. I am very unhappy that I cannot jog and I am thinking of cutting this cast off myself. Anyway, what would you do in my situation? Anyone was through this? Any tricks you know? Thanks to all who will share.
Thank you everyone and especially those who mentioned waterproof cast!
I told the doctor and he said that usually he offers it to kids and since he had no clue I am an active adult - he will change it.
I already done that and I am back on the trail! Thank you!

Well, if you cut it off you can count on the disability becoming worse and worse with age. If you truly can't take it easy and let this bone heal ask the doc for some Valium. Your bone has to heal and not being able to stand taking care of yourself is obviously too stressful for you.
I think almost every doc has waterproof options for casts now. I would call the doc and ask them if yours is waterproof. If it isn't can it be switched out? If it is what are your limitations.
When I got tackled by Center Field in college softball and everything from my knee cap out was shredded and ripped in half. I had a water proof cast, that was the mid 80's. This Orthopedic doc didn't use anything but water proof at that point.
I don't know anyone who has not had a waterproof one since then. They are rough and like fabric, not like plaster. The lining is usually a more poly fiber fill type instead of cotton batting. I could shower with my cast on but not take a soaking bath. I would drizzle shampoo down mine and swoosh it up and down. It made lather come out of all the tiny holes. It felt so good! I would use a blow dryer on low to dry some of it if it was night time.
Good luck! Do call the doc though. You cannot take this cast off just because you want to exercise. That's not really sound living. You have to allow the bone to heal or you'll have to have some surgeries on it later in life just to be able to use it. It will not heal right and be painful and your hand can end up with nerve damage. Not even being able to grasp or use it to write if it doesn't heal right.
Why can't u walk instead? Next time u go in ask for a waterproof cast.
Yes, that thing can drive you buggy, can't it? I broke an ankle years ago and my leg felt claustrophobic until it got accustomed to the cast (at least two or three weeks).
You need to call your doctor and ask, "What can I do for exercise?" You already know the negative instruction - not to twist your wrist certain ways; now ask for positive instruction. Is it all right for you to walk? To use an exercise bike? It may sound silly to ask, but go ahead and find out for sure.
yikes! this is such a worry. running is my main form of exercise, if for some reason i can't, i will turn into a blimp.
in your situation i'd power walk, or just walkwalk but for long time periods. you're still getting exercise, just a different sort (which isn't a bad thing.) if you position yourself so you can touch a wall or couch for support if you need it, you can do squats and other lower body work. with help to get up and down from the floor you can do ab exercises and leg exercises.
don't cut off the cast!

I had a hairline wrist fracture when I was 9.
We tried putting taping a plastic bag over the cast so it would stay dry and I could go swimming.
Of course it got soggy and disintegrated.
Boy, was the doctor mad - it had to be recast all over again.
The cast is on for a reason - the injury needs to be immobilized so the bone knits and heals as strongly as it can.
If it were less serious they'd have given you a strap on removable brace which is easy to remove for washing.
It just takes time - usually 6 weeks if you are a kid (kids just heal faster) or 8 or more weeks if you are an adult.
Stick with stretching and some yoga till it's time for the cast to come off.
Ask your Doctor.
What do professional Athletes do when in a cast?
If it does not heal properly, you can have problems with that wrist, forever.
Elyptical machine ... is that an option? Do you have stairs around that you can walk up repeatedly? The sweat WILL happen, you are in a cast, I have been in 5! Most of them on my wrist, talking from experience here. Baby powder and Gold bond powders will be your friends - as well as felt covered or thin plastic hangers (to get to the itch) and plastic baggies. You will want to do what you can to maintain "normal" life here honestly and yes, jogging is too much of an impact activity, but an elyptical maching is smooth and you can bump up the resistance so you get a good strong work out in a small amt of time if needed. PM me if you have any cast and care questions, like I said I have had my fair share, growing into a 6'2" body as a teen gets dangerous!
