Hi Moms
I was just wondering at what age you let your toddler sleep with a pillow? And was it a regular sized pillow or something smaller?
My daughter is 28 months old and she loves to sleep with a pillow for her naps at my mom's. It is a small pillow, and I cannot seem to find one like it anywhere. I am wondering if getting her a pillow would help her, as she seems to not want to nap lately and then by the end of the day she is SO crabby!! I am just trying to figure out any solution I can, so your feedback is much appreciated.
Thanks!
My son loved cuddling with and napping with my pillow, so I took a flatter pillow and put a matching pillow case on it for him. I know that everything I've seen has said to not give a pillow for as long as possible, but he liked it so much, we started letting him use it in his crib around 18 months. A lot of times, it's just lying next to him when he sleeps, but he has never had a problem sleeping with it.

I gave my son a pillow shortly after we moved him to a toddler bed, he was probably just under two. It is a small pillow that we ordered from www.onestepahead.com. They also sell pillow cases that fit. I think I also saw a travel pillow at Walmart that seemed about the same size but I don't know if they have cases for them or not.

I wouldn't think you'd need one that is smaller in size really, but I would stick with one that is more flat for now.

Both my kids got thier first pillow for thier 1st birthday. We did travel pillows and I cut down the cases and I sewed their names on the case with a Disney character. At about two I gave them regular pillows. They still have the little ones on the bed with their names on them. It was a milestone for us at the first birthday, kinda of like the big boy/girl bed thing was. Where do you live? I can probably make one for you if you PM me. I would just do it for the cost of shipping, the pillow, the case, the thread and the backing for the project. (((HUGS))).

We got our sone a smaller pillow and it seems to be working great. We actually got it from the craft department at walmart and I made a cover/ case for it, but I am sure you could use a regular case if you wanted.

We started letting our son use a pillow around the time that he was 15 months old. We just pulled out an older flat pillow that we had in the closet.
He seems to REALLY like his pillow and sleeps well through the night at at nap time.
We are not quite at the age yet that you are (my son is 22 months old), but we have established a VERY scheduled nap and bedtime routine and we've found that my son doesn't resist us too much. He may play in his crib for a while before sleeping (sometimes up to an hour at bedtime) but he ALWAYS sleeps.
All that may change for us though as he gets older and when we transition him to a toddler bed -- I'm not really looking forward to that.
Good luck!

we started a pillow in the crib at 2 years after double checking with the pediatrician. The one we used was "full size" but was pretty flat. She's done fine. Hope that helps.

It's hard to find toddler pillows and when you do find one, boy, are they expensive. I use a small pillow that I got at JoAnn Fabrics- my mom made a small pillow case. When my boy started using one (2yrs?) he didn't keep his head on it all night anyway b/c he rolls around. I didn't worry about sufficating. Now (4yrs) he uses a regular pillow and the little one is on his cot at daycare.

Our ped. gave us the go ahead at 18 mths b/c he was useing his blankie as a pillow. I found a child size one at Bed Bath and Beyond. It's just a littler smaller. I wouldn't use a "vanity" pillow, they aren't made to the same specifications for fire proof, allergen resistant etc. Plus they won't be as comfortable.

Try a camping supply store or a Comfort Shop or a store that carries bedding. I found our small pillows at Shopko and I have seen them in the camping department.

You can find the small pillows at walgreens...They often have a 2 for $5 deal on them. My son has been using a pillow when he sleeps on a mat at daycare since he was about 16 months old. He just started using one at home a couple months ago (he'll be 3 in October)..becase I started seeing him putting his blanket under his head. We use a small pillow, but you could use a regular one.

Rather than hunt for a small pillow and a special case, I just went to Target and looked for a regular size pillow that was pretty flat. I ended up finding one that worked perfectly and he now has one in his crib/toddler bed and one at daycare. The nice thing about the standard size pillows is that they fit all the way across the width of the crib, so your child can roll over and still have their head on the pillow.
By the way, we introduced a pillow at about 28 months too.
Good luck!

We started using a pillow around a year, I'm not real sure. I was concerned about the pillow moving and suffocating him, of course so I put the pillow under the crib sheet to keep it safe.

My boys started sleeping with pillows when they were big enough and coordinated enough to stand up and throw the thing. =) After they learn to walk, they start hoarding all the pillows in the house and piling them on their bed. Each of them now sleep with 2.

With all 3 of my kids they were given pillows when we transitioned them into a twin sized bed. Which was about 2-2 1/2 years. We also used a flatter pillow from our linen closet. We haven't had any problems. My youngest is a little over 2 1/2 and he still takes a nap, sometimes he gives me trouble, but usually he goes to sleep farely quickly. I know how it is though if he doesn't get a nap!!

You can buy a "travel" pillow at Target, Walmart, or K-Mart for less than $5. They work perfectly. They even have small pillow cases for them, though it is fun to buy some fleece and make your own if you have a sewing machine.

My daughter is 23 months old. About 6 months ago, we noticed she had been resting her head on the stuffed animal she was taking to bed. She would also sit on the sofa or bed with us and rest her head on a pillow like we did. So we gave her a small pillow a friend had embroidered for her when she was born. She loved it. She just wants to do whatever the big kids do right now, so maybe that would help your child. She sleeps on her stomach and places one side of her head on the pillow. Sometimes she wraps both arms around it and lays her head down. She has always been a great sleeper, and continued with her normal afternoon nap and bedtime with the pillow. Her pillow needed washing, so I gave her a regular size pillow that was pretty flat recently. She slept fine with that too. She's still in a crib, but we're thinking of transitioning to a big girl bed.

I found a toddler pillow at Babies r Us. It works great. It came with a satin pillow case but I'm sure you could cut a standard pillow case down and make two from it. My son is almost three and has been using a pillow for about 6 - 8 months.

It may help her. My son loves his pillow. He has had one since about 15-16 months. It is a flatter regular sized pillow.
Although, my son is 26 months, and stopped napping in the last few months, so maybe she is done with napping even if she needs it. He SO needs a nap, but just refuses! UGH!
hope things get better for you!
