Bathtub Safety

I've recently bought two different bath mats with suction cups on the bottom and neither have stuck to our tub where we bath our 14 mos old son. I read on the "instructions" that came with one that the tub should not be textured, but it looks like our tub has some very slight texture on it (maybe it helps adults not to slip but certainly it doesn't do anything for a 14 mos old). Given this, I am thinking I will need to buy those decals in order to help prevent slips/falls. Does anyone have any recos or other ideas for me other than trying to get my son to listen and sit down in the tub - which currently only works for about 5 seconds despite the toys we have in there with him.

Have you tried buying colored moose like soap foam, introduce a new bath toy or have his brother and sister take a bath with him? When my daughter was old enough to sit in the bath seat, I had given both of my kids a bath at the same time. They are now 4.5 and 2.5 and I'm sure would be totally bored if only one was to be given a bath. I also have a textured bath tub and I have those stickes and they don't work anywhere as close to those that you can pull off yourself at the end of the bath. It's now the kids job to place those on the side of the bathtub at the end of each bath.

Oh yeah, they also sell colored fizz tablets. I dropped 2 in the other day and when my son realized the water was yellow (there was a lot of bubbles in there before they got in), he started screaming saying that Caitlyn peed in the water and that's why it was yellow. She, of course denied it.

I know a lot of kids don't like taking baths, but if you make it a fun time thing, it will make all the difference in the world. Oh yeah, and we take lots of pictures and see who can have the tallest hat made out of bubbles.

I had the same problem, and couldn't get anything to stick to my textured tub. I finally bought a blow-up tub from Babies R Us, and put that in the bathtub for my little guy. He used it until he was almost 2 and a little more steady on his feet.

Decals will work and your son can help pick the design when you go to pick them out at the store. Also, consider using
glycerine soap that doesn't have lotion-ey/ slippery moisturizer ingredients.

It may sound a little strange but I think I gave birth to part fish. I have been there too. I was tired of laying the towel down in the bottom of the tub which my daughter always wanted to play with. What I did was to buy a shallow container you know the kind that would slip under your bed. They have some that are about 6 inches deep and maybe 2-3 feet long. Put your bath mat in it because it is smooth the mat will stick to it. Fill it up with water and you have a pint size bath tub for your little one. It is bigger than a baby's bath tub but smaller than the regular full size adult tub. Good luck.

Nothing is needed. It's not like he's in there alone showering. Getting them to sit in the bath can be a battle. I would just take them out when they wouldn't sit. Both mine eventually got the picture. Try and get him to sit as much as possible while in there and falls won't be an issue.

I hear you. Ever since he could stand, my little guy has been all about standing during his bath. I bought my bath matt at Target. It's quite large and rectangular so it covers most of the bottom of the tub. It has good suction so it stays put. It's clear, but they may have white or some other colors. A few tips...I wet the tub a bit before I stick it down. That helps it stay down. To keep it clean, I pop it in the dishwasher once a week or so. I also bought a second matt for the side/top of the tub in case my little guy slips, he won't hurt himself on the side of the tub. Hope this helps. Good luck!

I have used a bath towel in the bottom and then just hang it to dry after or wash it. Or at walmart and bed bath and beyond they have the little rubber ducks and other shapes that stick to the tub. They come in a pack of maybe 10 and they have little suction cups on the bottom of them. They are movable so you can move them everytime. But you do have to let them dry after the bath or they will eventually get moldy. They are usually near the bath/shower curtain isle at the store and not too expensive.

My 2 year-old still likes to stand in the tub for the first part of his bath, then if I don't mention it, he sits down on his own after about 10 minutes or so, and stays sitting or lying down in the water for the duration of the bath. I just let him go at his own pace in there. The bath towel on the bottom of the tub will certainly work, I just don't like having to deal with a sopping wet big towel after his bath. Also, some kids get fascinated with the towel being in there and try to pick it up. So we use the removable decals with the suction cups that someone mentioned below. Target also sells them, that's where we get ours. They are only about $5 for a pack of around 10, and they sell stars, frogs, ducks, and some other shapes and they are all cute.

I even take them to my mom's house when we visit there and they have a slightly textured tub...they stick perfectly. In fact the suction is so good on them that once they are wet, you can throw them against the bath wall and they will stick (fun game before getting out of the bath, haha). Do be sure to remove them so they can air dry after every bath though, because they do collect a bit of water underneath between the suction cups.

I always used a hand towel. I put it on the bottom of the tub under the water and sat them on it, and it worked great & didn't mark up the tub or get gross and moldy.

Hi L.,

I have been there and done that 4 times so I think I might have a little insight into what it is that you are going through. What I did when my children were that age I use to lay a bath towel into the tub prior to putting my toddler in it and I also took out the toys for the tub and made bathtime just that bathtime. I found the toys to be a distraction for my children thus I would save the toys for after they were bathed, and as for the towel I used it as basically a mat for them as when they stood up they didn't slip due to them not having to deal with the slippery texture of the bathtub instead they had a solid terry clothed towel to help support their little feet. Granted I had a little etra laundry to do, and I would have to wring out the towel or dry it out every night but it was better than having my little ones fall and hurt themselves in the tub.
