Bathing Infants

Are there any bathtubs for infants that are waist size in height and can be used in a regular bathtub? My grandson is now 20" long and weighs 20 pounds. My daughter has a back problem and has trouble bathing the baby in a standard baby bathtub placed in the regular tub.

I came across an ad for what you are asking for in this month's issue of American Baby. It is a bathtub and changing table combo on legs that is waist high. Here is the website, it runs about $100, and the magazine has a discount code for 10% off (enter code: ambaby0409).

Usa a baby tub and place it over the kitchen sink. You are not bending and puting any strain on you back. I bathe my daughter like that for a very long time. I was also having some back issues using the tub and that was my miracle saver. Good luck.

I just got one at target that is blue that is supposed to fit in any size kitchen sink. Sorry I don't remember the name, but you can see the notches on the bottom that allow it to rest on a sink. Good luck!

We have a blue first years infant/toddler tub. It fits in our kitchen sink, and our baby (who weighs less but is longer) uses the toddler side. My husband often bathes her from sink height to spare his knees.

I do recall seeing those old free-standing models which were often part of a bassinet with a drain hose, but indeed, in the 50's!!

It now seems alot of work for nothing, and we too could not bend over a tub for infant washings. Besides, it is dangerous to have an infant in a huge, hard porcelain tub! We found the easiest, most secure, inexpensive, method was to purchase a baby bathing sling (fine mesh fabric mounted on a frame at an angle that water can pass right through), and place it either in a kitchen sink or in a small tub on the kitchen counter. They are sold at BabiesRUs and BuyBuyBaby stores for $7-10. Best invention ever! We did not use a folding model, but rather one with a fixed frame and incline. For viewing purposes only, try this link: http://www.threesunsresale.com/baby-bath-sling.html or http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=326505...
Good luck.

If she isn't able to find a tub...I used to take a bath w/my son! That may sound gross, but I would take my shower first, and then my husband would bring my son to me and I'd run bath water and wash him up. Hubby would take him and dry him off while I dried myself! When my husband wasn't home, I would put him in a bouncy seat (may not work if the kid can tip it though!) and get him out when I was ready, put him in a towel and back into the seat so I could dry...it was complicated alone, but it worked well w/someone there to help! I did it because we were living w/my mom at the time and her tub was very slippery! It was just easier that way! Then I got a tub mat when we moved to a new house and that worked just fine, but it never even occurred to me at mom's! haha!

You can put the baby tub on the kitchen table with a towel under it to catch any spills. Otherwise, look for a special kneeling stool to help support her back while bathing the baby in the bathroom tub.

I'm not sure if they sell a bathtub like what you are describing...at least I haven't seen one. You can move those infant tubs around though. You don't have to put them in a regular tub. Maybe you can use your kitchen counter, just place the tub on the counter and your daughter can bathe her son.

How old is he? I used to just line the kitchen sink with a non skid mat or towels and bath my kids there.

We've been using this Safety First model for our 10 month old:
http://www.safety1st.com/product/detail.asp?ID=2754

It's sometimes difficult to push down into the tub, but my son seems fine in it. He can sit upright and play with the running water and toys. The arm clamp fits over the side of the tub. You can also adjust how it's facing.

I usually sit on a step stool by the tub to bathe him. Although not the most comfortable position, it's much easier on my back than some of the other tubs we've used in the past with our daughter.

I've seen some at Babies R Us, Target, just about any store that sells infant products. And of course you can purchase it online from the link above.

It needs to drain thoroughly, too. So after you use it, flip it around (your daughter may need help with this if her back hurts). Unfortunately, it's bulky, too. We just hide it in the back of the tub.

She could take on of the little tubs designed to be placed in the regular bathtub and put it on her kitchen counter.

Hi

My daughter is 9 months old & 20lb and as yet cannot sit up by herself for very long. She outgrew her infant tub a while back and since then we have just been laying her on her back or front in the regular tub in about 2-3 inches of water with a few toys , she get's to have a splash around while we wash her and this way we don't end up breaking our backs by leaning over a very low tub trying to hold her...the only bending we really have to do is when we lift her out.

Alternatively you can buy little seats for the regular tub with suction pads on the feet that stick to the bottom of the tub , this keeps them in a sitting posistion in the water without the risk of tipping over...maybe she could look on ebay or amazon?

Good luck

Munchkin sells a blow up duck tub. I have seen them at Target and Buy Buy Baby.

You can use it anywhere. We used it on a table, at the beach, in the tub, on our deck, you name it. It also made a fun pool in the summer.

I never used a tub. I used the kitchen sink. It worked quite well. I was too cheap to buy one of those baby tub things.

YMMV

There's this http://www.amazon.com/Baby-Deluxe-Bathtub-Changer-BB030-2... but once the baby sits up on his own he is going to want to be in the big tub and it will be too dangerous to have him in this standing thing and it is very expensive so not sure it's worth it.

Dear L.-

My son was born in germany, and there they had EXACTLY what you describe! A bathing/changing table on wheels. The changing portion flipped up...and under was the 'bathtub' complete with a drain...and a hose for easy draining. Maybe you could google?

I know that several people who post here are FROM germany...perhaps they can tell you what it is called in german...and where it might be found on line.

Good luck!

I haven't seen one of those, but most baby bath tubs these days are made to fit securely onto a standard double sided sink. I always bathed my little ones in the kitchen at the sink in their baby bath tubs.

Good luck!

I have one myself, it's a Baby Tenda brand. I hope that helps! The website is www.babeetenda.com
It's part of the high chair ensemble. We're still using our table chair and my daughter is 3...using it as a desk and toddler chair that came with it, even has a chalk board side and a marker side but I think the bath part is quite easy on your back too! :)

Hi L.,

Target/Walmart have a duck that is a blow up bath tub for sitting in the tub and is great for infants and toddlers. I loved it.

Yes, I bought mine from "Babies "R" Us". It is a white tub that starts out as an infant tub. Then it has a piece in the middle that extends it out (to make the tub longer) for when the baby can sit up on their own. The tub can be used from newborn to the age of 4 yrs old. When I sit my son in his it cimes up to his waistline. It is very easy to use, very lightweight & ytou can use it anywhere, in the bathtub, on the kitchen counter, table, etc.! It is a grwat tub & I highly reccomend it! Just aske an associate at Babies R Us. It comes w/ a blue sponge that a newborn can lay on in the shape of a whale. (just a description to help you find it). This tub never hurts my back & it is fairly priced, I think it was around $25.00. Good Luck!
