Bad Diaper Rash - Spring, TX

OK my daughter had an ear infection and was given an antibiotic I cannot remember the name at the moment but when it was prescribed the doctor told me that it would turn her poop red and give her diarrhea, to be careful because she might get diaper rash, and it has. She has had it about a week and a half now and she has never had anything like this before there are bumps and what looks like little pimples. It was also her dads weekend and he asked to keep her an extra night and the only diaper rash cream you can use on her is A&D because everything else seems to give her diper rash, although he did buy A&D he used a white cream instead of the yellow ointment I always use and all the white creams seem to make it worse. So its like for four days we were hurting the problem. But when I wipe her she tells me it hurts and the diaper rash ointment doesn't seem to be helping at all if anything it just seems to be keeping it from spreading worse. So my question is how long do I go before I take her to the doctor? and is there anything else I can use on her to help?

So What Happened?

well I took her to the dr and it was a fungal infection due to the antibiotics and she is getting better now thank u for all the wonderful advice.... and as to why my 21 month old is not potty trained she is not ready, she is smart enough to tell me that something hurts but physically she is not ready and unless I am not getting "real" with myself I believe that it is quite appropriate for an under two year old child to not be out of pull ups completely yet we are working on it but she is definitely not ready for me to throw them away

I know it really does sound crazy, but feed her yogert. It really does help. My son is 2 1/2 and when he was just a year old he got sick and put in the hospital and given IV antibiotics. When we got home he got diaper rash for the first time in his life, but after giving him yogert it disapeared without having to mess with those creams. Now it is his favorite food and he has a small jar every morning for breakfast!

Corona Small Animal Ointment, which you can find at the local feed store. It sounds funny but works wonders. My son kept having bad diaper rash (allergic to pampers, we think) and we used Corona on it and within a day it was better. Good luck.

The rash caused by antibiotics is generally fungal. (not unlike yeast infection) Any over-the-counter antifungal will clear this up. WalMart's Equate brand of chlortrimizol (spelling may be off, there) has always done the trick, and promptly for my boys, following treatment for an ear infection.

If you ever have a health concern like this w/ your child and you want an answer right away call a nurse hotline. Most children's hospitals have a toll free number. With my first child I remember calling several times a year and once it was a horrible diaper rash. You tell them the symptoms, they ask you a few questions too and sometimes you can find a solution w/o a trip to the doctor. They do advise if symptoms persist or if it truly is an emergency to consult a doctor though. My son did have a yeast infection. The pimples were bursting and even bleeding in places. The cream the doctor prescribed wasn't working and the nurse told me to put an antifungal on it like Lotramin creme for athletes foot or ringworm. By gosh it was like magic. I kept a tube on the changing table from then on. Good Luck & prayers your little one feels better soon. I also remember the tears it caused me from seeing him in pain.

I don't think it is diaper rash, I think it is a yeast infection. The antibiotic kills the natural bacteria that eat the yeast which are also natural in our bodies. Then the yeast overgrow and create a yeast infection. You can call your doctor's nurse to make sure, but I think if you just rub monostat or some other yeast infection cream on her bottom, you should see a marked improvement right away.

She had a horrible diaper rash when she was a month old, and I found some natural remedies. Anyhow this really works, and is 100% safe! I left them in her diaper for a little bit, and the next morning her rash was gone!!! No more diaper rashes since either!!! Good luck with everything!!! Hope I could help...

Have you tried Boudreux's Butt Paste? This stuff worked really well on my 18 mo old when he had a very bad diaper rash. It was caused by antibiotic too. Desitin, A&D, and all the others did nothing to help. I have also learned to use PURE Cornstarch baby powder. This helps to soak up the wetness and is soft on the skin. I use alot at a time though. You may want to call and speak to the doctor to see if he has any other ideas.

Old home remedy: Flour & water mixture. Ive used this to, but it is hard to wipe off

You might consider a probiotic to help with the digestion issue. If you can get your hands on any breastmilk, it works wonders. I use Resinol, which has calamine, corn starch, lanolin and zinc. It works almost as well as breastmilk. It will clear up an almost bleeding diaper rash overnight.

I would also suggest the Lotrimin stuff another mom recommended and then coat it with Resinol.

I think the tea tree oil might be a good idea as well. I was reading an article in Better Nutrition that recommended that for toenail fungus. I bet it works well.

I know that breaks your heart to see them uncomfortable. Good luck!

Let her go naked for a little while. Maybe when she watches a movie, lay her down on a pad and tell her she's got to stay on the pad to help her bum heal. Leaving the diaper off will keep her bottom dry and breathe for at least a little while and the rest of the time I would just use the cream and change her diaper religiously.

Hi K.....a few months ago my daughter also got a bad diaper rash after taking antibiotics for an ear infection, but she also had a yeast infection from the antibiotics as well. What my dr suggested was to use Lotrimin AF twice a day for the yeast infection (which were the red bumps), and then use a mixture of cornstarch and Maalox to sooth the diaper rash (my daughter stopped crying during diaper changes after using this one time.....it really works!), and to put Boudreax's Butt Paste (or any diaper rash creme with zinc oxide in it) to treat the diaper rash on top of the Maalox mixture. It was so much better within a day and was completely gone after about 4 or 5 days. Also, don't use the wipes that has alcohol in them because that just burns their little bottoms. I used the Lansinol wipes (in a purple package and can be found with the breastfeeding items)instead.

Hope this makes your diaper changing time easier! : )

Call your doctor and ask him/her to prescribe your daughter a diaper rash ointment. My boy and girl toddlers just got over the rotavirus and had the worst diaper rash I had ever seen. I called my dr. and she called in the prescription. It took a couple of days, but it did work. The ointment is similar to Aquaphor (it may even be the main ingredient).

Good luck!

My youngest son gets a rash from omnicef. It always does it to him. I called my doctor and asked them for a medication for the rash, which seems to be a common occurrence. They gave me some cream; but I can't remember the name of it. The 2nd time he had a rash from the omnicef they gave me some samples of BOUDREUXS BUTT PASTE. It really helped! It also works good as a hand lotion for extremely dry hands! Another thing a friends pediatrician suggested was burnt flour.... You brown some all purpose flour in a pan, let it cool and apply to the area needed. Its worked too. I just store it in a zip lock bag. It works too.

I'll just reiterate what a couple of moms have already said. It definitely sounds like a yeast infection, which is fairly common after antibiotics. I also used Lotrimin AF on my daughter. Be sure to note the AF, since there are different kinds of Lotrimin. Once you start that, it should clear up within a few days. Good luck.

I am not sure why you could only use A & D, but we always used Dr. Smith's, which worked wonders and healed rashes quickly - MUCH better than any other kind we used. It is a little harder to find but both Target and Wal-Mart (some of them) carry it. You might need to ask the pharmacist.

Good luck, but if nothing else I would definitely check/ w the doctor about it if it doesn't clear up right away.

When one of my 3 kids would get a diaper rash, I would end up having to use wet paper towels. The regular wipes would sting their bottom. Also, I sometimes would let them sleep at night without a diaper. Yes, I had to change their sheets in the morning, but the air helped to dry out their bottom. I can't remember the symptoms for a yeast infection, but you might want to look that up. Because, if she also has a yeast infection, the dr will need to prescribe meds for that.

Also, I use Culturelle for Kids whenever I start a round of anti-biotics on my kids. It is a probiotic that helps to replace the good bacteria in their digestive tract. This helps prevent the diaper rash.

She may have a yeast infection from the antibiotic. Sometimes children get this in the form of a rash on their bottoms. It looks like little cluster of bumps in patches on their bottom. If your not sure I would take her back to the doctor before treating it since she is so super-sensitive to everything.

The cream to use is Dr. Smith. It cost a little more, but it is worth it. My kids had senitive skin and bad rashs and this was the only stuff that worked period. I also did not use baby wipes I put water in a spray bottle with baby wash and would spray that on them and used wet paper towels to clean gently. It was a little cold, but gentle and no alcohol in it.

Amoxycilin I think is the name of first antibiotics given for ear infection. I might have spelled it wrong. Anyway, I remember it turned my son's poop purple too but he didn't get any diaper rash.

Have you tried Dr. Smith's diaper cream? That is also white cream so perhaps your daughter might be allergic to it as well. Anyway, you can always try OTC antifungal cream, which was suggested to me by a friend who was studying pediatrics. But if it's that bad and she is still young, I would just have her seen by a doctor and get something prescribed that could help her heal faster.

Good luck!

To me it sounds like a yeast infection, which is very common in women (even the smallest ones) after a round of antibiotics. Whenever the doc prescribes me and antibiotic I tell them they need to also write one for diflucan. I would try using Monistat for a week and see if that doesn't clear it up. If it doesn't or if it seems to be doing more damage than good I would take her to the doctor. They can give her a stronger antifungal, or reccomend another course of treatment. Just remember to frequently change her diaper. Fungus likes warm, dark, and wet. Hope this provides some relief- for the both of you.

A week and a half is too long. My girls have never had a rash more then three days. call the dr (he can perscribe something that might help or might make it worse, you'll just have to see.) I would not put anything on her bottom during the day except maybe some yeast infection medicine. Do you have a training potty? take her diaper off and clean her up. Every half an hour or so have her sit on the potty for five minutes. You can read a story to her. If she's watching tv, have her sit on the potty. don't put a diaper on her until nap time and then put it on just before sleep (with diaper ointment) and take it off as soon as she wakes, clean her up, and go without a diaper again. If she is still having diareah you can restrict her playing to the kitchen or if you have carpet in the living room you could put down some plastic (drop cloth or garbage bags) with a sheet or something on top that can be easily cleaned up.

At bedtime try to change her diaper and clean her up at least once during the night so she's not sitting in so much pee. Make sure you put her on the potty before bed too to help get rid of as much pee as possible.

I hope this helps! Airing it out is much better then the ointments, at least that's what my ped said.

think about this one for a minute. when adult women take antibiotics its a common side affect to get a yeast infection. try yeast infection cream. if that doesn't work, although its messy it works like a champ. Vasoline and corn starch. The yeast infection cream you can buy any one over the counter and just rub it on her bottom. Expensive, but worth it. The vasoline and cornstarch is way cheap and messy but, works really well when nothing else will. Vasoline will keep the wet off and the cornstarch will help the itchiness. Poor baby, my heart goes out to her. My oldest daughter used to get really bad diaper rashes and had one that even scarred one time. but, try either of these. Guaranteed results..

Hi K.,

It sounds like things are tough at your place right now. I may suggest that you find a doctor that will use antibiotics that don't hurt your child. It is a good idea to use probiotics with antibiotics as well. You can cause terrible thrush infections with antibiotics. Those white spots are thrush. It takes an antifungal to get rid of that. I am not a doctor just a mother with the experience of thrush. You should take her back to the doctor now to get something for the spots.
For regular diaper rash I have a diaper rash cream that is magical. It was designed by a pharmacist for his child who had diaper rash that did not respond to other things. It is called GRAHAM SLAM. It is available from grahamslambaby.com . I use it on my autistic kid's bottom when it gets red, and it works quickly. Good luck with the ear infection. I wish I could suggest more to help.
best of luck,

You have had a lot of suggestions. My first would be to get a call in to your pediatrician. They may write a script or tell you to get something OTC, but I would at least call before you get something.

I would also like to suggest that you start giving your daughter yogurt. The PP's are correct in assuming that the rash is likely a yeast infection. Now that my daughter is old enough for yogurt, if she has to go on antibiotics, I give her yogurt and a banana everyday she is on the meds and then for usually two days after. The last two ear infections we have dealt with (we have to use very strong antibiotics as my daughter is somewhat resistant due to her 74 day stay in the NICU she she was born), we have avoided diarrhea and subsequent rash and yeast infection all together.

For now, if possible allow your daughters behind to get some "air time" if you can allow her to play outside in a dress with no diaper or bloomers that will help tremendously.

Good Luck and get a call in to the doctor soon. Amanda

I am an advocate of tea tree oil, corn starch, and air, keeping things as natural as possible. If these other things work for you, though, then by all means....

Also, once she's all healed up, spread petroleum jelly very liberally on her whole diaper area. Do not use this before the rash goes away. For future reference, if you can expect diarrhea, keep her greased up to protect her skin, especially overnight.

(I'm sorry if I'm telling you what you already know, but you didn't indicate that, so I didn't want to take it for granted.)

It is a yeast infection and daughter got them all the time. Nystantin is the prescribed cream; however if your little isn't prone to these, then you could probably get away with on OTC cream. Just buy the cream used for women's yeast infections. I forget the name, but you can get it almost anywhere. It is a bit runny, so I mix it with vaseline so the med can stay on the area in question and not get soaked up in the diaper. With in 6-8 hours you should start seeing improvement with the redness going away. I also give daughter drinkable yogurt. This puts the good bacteria back into the colon that the antibiotics wiped out. Preferably the kind with low sugar content, but any is better than none. If you have any area where the skin is cracking open (yes it can get that bad) then you can mix some Maalox in with the yeast cream and vaseline and then it helps to neutralize the acidity in the poop when it comes out and prevents any more damage from occuring. You can also use this method as preventitive for when your child is prescribed antibiotics to keep them from getting the rash to begin with. I don't know why Dr.'s don't tell people this when they prescribe antibiotics!! It is much easier to prevent than to heal.
Good Luck and hope your little one is feeling better soon. Oh, I keep this medicine on 24/7 until gone and usually it takes about 3-4 days depending on how bad it was to begin with. I use it now as preventative and we haven;t had one in ages, probably a year and a half or more.

Her antibiotics might have thrown off the balance of the good bacteria in her body, and the red pimples sound like a fungal infection.
