Bad Cramping

I have horrible, horrible cramping during my very heavy periods. It usually lasts for the first three days. I take Aleve (4) or (1000 mg) every four hours to control the pain. I have had my tubes tied after my last child so I don't really need birth control but when I was on birth control my periods were much lighter and the pain much more controllable. Does anyone have any advice? Should I ask my GYN to put me back on the pill?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I finally went to my GYN and he suggested that I try Motrin 600mg b/c I can take more of it and more often. So we will see how this works!!!

B6. Take B6 supplements. My OB/GYN suggested it to me when I told him of my severe PMS, heavy periods and horrible cramping. I tried the pill but emotionally it really messed me up because of the hormones. I refused to make that sacrifice. So I started taking B6 supplements and in about a month I really noticed a difference. Also, the number one culprit of difficult periods is dehydration. So many of us are seriously dehydrated and don't even realize it. Cut back (if it is an issue) on caffine and alcohol intake.

Hello,
I have had these same problems for years I have endometreosis. You might want to look into it . There are many People who have it but dont know. Birth control pills help so the growth is slowed down.

I have had my tubes tied as well. My periods use to be so calm and hardly no pain. But after my last sons birth I had my tubes tied. It has been nothing but pain all the way. And very heavy periods. I am to have the procedure done as well but yet to see the GYN. But I need to do it soon.
I have several friends who have told me the same happen to them after tubes being tied.

Im hoping you get relief soon

Being on the pill once you've had your tubes tied seems like an unnecessary hassle, but for the same things you're going through, my doctor put me on a heavy dose of Yasmin. I had horrible pms with tremendous breast and lower back pain, my periods were VERY heavy and VERY long. My periods are now predictable to almost the hour, MUCH lighter, shorter, and virtually no pms. But your GYN might have a totally different idea. Either way I'd call her ASAP. There is NO reason to continue suffering through this!!! Good luck honey!!!

I don't know what the best treatment is but definitely let your GYN know what you are suffering through. There are lots of options and you can find one that you are the most comfortable with .

I am having the exact same problem ever since my tubal - I just recently was put back on the pill but am experiencing a whole other world of problems not to mention the whole reason I had my tubes tied was because I didn't want to have any more children and I didn't want to be on the pill because of the side effects that it causes my body. I will see how much pain this period will bring (I currently have to take vicodine to even be able to stand the cramps). I am wondering where to go from here - my dr told me I had to try and stay on the pill for 2 - 3 months before any surgical treatments would be considered. ( I have had the ultra sound and vaginal ultasound and one small fibroid was found - I believe that all of my problems are because of my tubal)
I just mainly posted this to tell you that you are not alone and I hope that you find something that works for you!

Hi J.,

Please go to your OB/GYN. I had the same sypmtons and they were due to uterine fibroids. It is not normal to have painful, heavy periods that you need to control with Ibuprofen. Make sure they give you an ultrasound to find them. Let us know if you get any relief. I have 4 fibroids the largest measuring 10 x 11 cm!

I actually requested to be put back on the pill for that same reason. I, like you, had my tubes tied but I was dying when it came to cramps (the one true time I hate being a woman) and it really does make it feel a lot better. I would talk to your OBGYN and see what they say.

I would call dr.. Do go in if anything they can check things out.. I have a frind who has bad cramping.. not sure if you have clots like she does.. but she just went in...

Also... DO NOT TAKE 4 PILLS at a time!!! THAT IS SOOOO WRONG!!!! you are only to take 2 MAX!!!! IF you are in that much pain.... they can give you something that is save to take...

I would be sure to tell your dr you are taking 4 and see what they say about that...

It is not un comonon for one with a tubal to go back on BCP to help with bad cramps though.. It does help some people out... I know a friend who does... I hope they can help.. but Gosh.. DO go in call ASAP!!! Dont wait till next !!! Call NOW!!!

Hi J.;

I went through this last year and had to have a hystrectomy done because I was full of cysts. Absolutely tell your GYN, and ask about having a Sonogram done as well to check for cysts.
My last period lasted 5 months straight with severe cramping so bad at times that I couldn't get out of bed.

I used to have horrible cramping and very heavy flow until I started seeing a chiropractor. Come to find out my pelvis was tilted forward and turned to the left. Afer about 4 visits I got my next period and couldn't believe the difference. Now I get a little lower backache for a few hours after I start!! That's all!! If you don't have a chiropractor and live in the Tulsa area mine is locatd in BA. Dr. Dusti Thomas. If not be sure you look for a REPUTABLE chiropractor who uses an activator instead of cracking and popping you!! It should be listed with his add that he is an activator Dr.!! It's worth a try...better than pills if you can avoid them!!!! Good Luck!!!

I had the Novasure done like Danielle. So far it's been great. I had the same problem with heavy bleeding after my tubal. I dealt with it for 8 years. Then I started spotting, so the doctor suggested the procedure. This is a wonderful website about "endometrial ablation." http://p076.ezboard.com/fendometrialablationboardablation... I got more information there than I did from my doctor. You should call your doctor and make an appointment. You need to make sure nothing else is wrong. Good luck.

Hi J., This is also happening to me and i did talk to my OB. She told me to take 800 mg motrin 3 times a day and start taking it 2-3 days before yor period starts. yes it does seem excessive but it helps to relax the uterus and eleviate heavy cramping. I was not a believer but I now have less cramping and also the flow has slowed down. I was losing large clots and soaking pads every 2 hours, gross I knoww! We did a D&C but the motrin is helping.

My periods now last 4-5 days as opposed to 7-9 days! good luck and let me know how you do.

Actually if you are open to try a chiropractor that understands chinese medicine and does acupuncture then that is your best bet. It is safer than the pill and it will COMPLETELY remove your cramps. I use to be so severely ill from cramps that I was doubled over, taking pain killers and missing school (when I was in high school) for 2 days. This was 13+ years ago. Then it was barable to at least keep on advil pretty regularly for the 3rd day and after that I needed nothing. However, after starting chiropractic treatment, I got to where I had absolutely no pain and the only way I knew I was starting was by counting the days on the calendar because they were exactly 29 days apart. I had to be prepared for my period or I would go to the bathroom to find a real mess. Sorry if that is too much info, but seriously somthing to consider. Another thing that significantly reduces that pain is bio-identical hormones. You can use over the counter progesterone creams which work well, but I refrain from the creams as I have small children and don't want to risk rubbing it off on them. Good luck!

I had the same problem for years. Recently, I was diagnosed with endometriosis and the treatment options included the pill. I have had tremendous relieve from the cramping and heavy periods that accompany endometriosis. Since cramping and heavy periods could be a result of many other more serious medical issues, I would suggest that you discuss the cramping and heavy periods with you GYN so that the two of you can determine the best course of action. I had to undergo a lot of tests to rule out every other possible diagnosis. Good Luck and Best Wishes!!

You should definitely talk to your GYN about it. Hard cramping and heavy periods could indicate some kind of health problem that an over-the-counter medicine won't fix. If I'm understanding correctly how much Aleve you're taking, I gotta say, you must be in a lot of pain because you're taking WAY too much. You shouldn't exceed more than 1250 mg A DAY. My sympathies to you. You don't mention how your periods were before the birth control but when you were on it you seemed to have normal periods. Your note seems to point to the fact that it's only after your tubes were tied that this has been bad. So it is possibly hormone related, so pills might help. Either way make sure your doctor reviews your family history, if there is any, and tell him EVERYTHING. Don't be surprised if he orders an ultrasound to determine the cause of the bleeding. Don't be afraid of the diagnosis, its better to get it taken care of now rather than put it off until it does become something bad. Good luck to ya. :)

I had the same problem after the birth of my last child. I also had my tubes tied so I didn't need birth control. I went to my doctor and he told me about a procedure called Novasure. It is an outpt procedure, they "burn" you uterus lining. 90% of pts never have a period again, you may still feel some PMS but the symptoms are not as severe. It was the best thing I ever did.

By all means, you should go back on the pill if it helps. Nowadays, alot of women get on the pill for problems with their period and not necessarily for birth control.

I am having that problem now also. I have been having really painful periods since I had my little girl 5 years ago. I had my tubes tied after I had her. Now they are talking about doing a hysterectomy because my bleeding is so heavy that it is making me anemic and I rather not go on the pill because of all the negative reports I have been hearing. What is your age? I am trying to get them to just take out my uterus so i won't go through the change so fast. That could be a option also. Let me know what you decide. B.
