I am 5 weeks post partum and a few days ago noticed a fishy smell on my pad, still have lochia.
Called doctor today and will be seeing them on monday -- during my online research, i found 2 possible explaination for foul smell: BV or yeast infection. The only symptom that I have is the smell.
Could you share the difference (symptoms) between the 2? I've never had either one before. Also, I know that I will need antibiotics if it is BV -- I am breastfeeding, and nurse said it is safe -- anyone have any experience with this?
BV is classic for fishy smell and with yeast their is no smell unless you have BV with it. So you will need to see your doctor to get medicine. You can get oral meds or intravaginal gel wish ever your doctor recommend and please do not douche if you were thinking about it because it will only mast the problem.

well I've had both and honestly, each time I've gotten them it was difficult for me to tell the difference except for the consistency of the discharge would be slightly different, but even then it was difficult. I always went to the Dr. to have them verify for sure for me. Do know that if it is BV, it is likely that after you finish the antibiotics, you might get a yeast infection afterwards. It has something to do with the bacteria that your treating (due to an overgrowth of the bacteria) actually controls the yeast amount, so when the antibiotics are taken, the bacteria decreases causing an increase in yeast. It all balances out after that though.
I've never had to worry about the antibiotics while breastfeeding, but during my first trimester (about 6-8 weeks) I was on antibiotics for BV for about a month (apparently it had become resistant) and the Dr. didn't seem to have any concerns with it and so far there hasn't been any noticed impact on the baby.

I get usually get a yeast infection half way through the p regency and then again sometime during the baby's first year. Along a smell there usually is the itch and whitish discharge. When I feel the infection coming on I take probiotics and get the vagisil regular strength. I have also BF all five of the kids. Even if you have a BV you will want to take the probiotics. Good Luck hope you feel better soon.

I usually get both together. I really don't like to take antibiotics so I treat them naturally. I know that I usually have a lot of itching with a yeast infection and a fishy smell with the BV.

With a yeast infection the discharge is white and cottage cheesish. With BV the discharge is more clear/yellow and causes moderate to severe itchiness/burning. I never had the BV while BFing so I am not sure if the antibiotics are safe. I do know that the earlier you treat it the easier it is to clear up. One time I got the antibiotics late and it was pretty much past the point of no return. It was a horrible experience. HTH
