So my friends son 3months will not gain weight. He was hospitalized last weekend and they claimed it was because of reflux. They changed the formula he is on and he has gained 3 oz. This is amazing compared to what this little guy was doing (loosing fast!). I know this formula is helping however I would like some idea's to help her out incase the nurse says he needs to gain more (next apt is tomorrow. ) You ladies are amazing and I know you can help me with idea's. I am so worried for her and her little boy!

Also he keeps leaning to the right. They said that the way he lays could cause tumors. Has anyone heard of this? I think it is crazy! So now they bought a nap nanny to help his sleeping! Those things are expensive!

The reason this is coming up now is because she was over last night and I could see the toll it was taking on her. Along with all of the questions about the baby, how do I help her? She is under so much stress.

What can I do next?

Stay on the formula that he is tolerating. They will set up more frequent appts. and monitor him. There really is no way to help a 3m gain weight except make sure that he is keeping the formula down, and taking them regularly.

As for the tumors. There is a condition called infant torticollis, which is probably what they are referring to. If the doctor suspects it, they will order xrays and tests. Most cases do not involve tumors and only require daily exercises to correct.

For the lack of weight gain - we just had a friend go through this. Poor little guy gained NO WEIGHT in his first 5 months of life.
After months of testing and trial/error at the Children's Hospital, they determined that he has a severe milk allergy.
He's on prescription formula now, and now he's thriving!

And I think your friend needs a new doctor.
Laying in the same position can cause muscle imbalances and "flat head", but tumors? Um....

If he refuses to eat, you could try what I did when my first GD was hospitalized when he was 3 mos. old. Nurses told me that if he didn't eat X amount by a certain time, they were going to put him on a feeding tube.

I waited until he was almost asleep and then I put the bottle in his mouth. Babies suck as a natural response to something in their mouth. So he just sucked down that whole bottle without even realizing it because he was pretty much asleep!

My littlest at 2 months of age was found to have a tumor growing on his neck. His weight had slowed every appt after his birth till they found that tumor. It was golf ball sized. I'll never know how I didn't see it till she flipped him over and showed me. There it was plain as day. I was shocked. Well he kept losing weight so they decided the tumor was giving him failure to thrive and removal was necessary. Well the first surgery the doctors all heard his murmur which my doc thought was no big deal and would go away by one. Well the anesthesiologist disagreed and refused to do the surgery before an echo. Well after the echo they discovered FOUR heart defects. They decided inspite of his unseen heart troubles up to that moment they decided that tumor removal was necessary. So three surgeries later it was gone finally. Then at 8 months of age he had his open heart surgery. They discovered he had actually 5 heart defects. All was well and we hoped for a turn around. He was 8 months by then.

Well anyways he got failure to thrive from about 2 months off and we watched him fall straight off the charts and keep falling. I was nursing which they said was best and we upped my fat intake and eventually they wanted him to be on a high concentration of alimentum formula in addition to breast milk. Didn't work. He got hospitalized again when he was around one with the failure to thrive and they suspected he had CF. He didn't.

Anyways with all my sons problems there really wasn't that many options. I got packets of stuff from enfamil they wanted me to add to my breast milk to bulk it up. They decided that the formula was better than the breast milk but I disagreed and did strictly breast feed still. I saw no gain with the formula and he didn't want it in the first place. Couldn't have him not eating so we just did all we could with the breast milk. He didn't actually start improving till mere months ago and he's nearly 3. Not much you can do for a 3 month old. All I was really told was breast milk that was basically bulked up or a formula like alimentum that was bulked up by putting in more scoops than is normally called for in the formula was the best bet. I tried both without much for results. Basically till his underlying conditions improved he just didn't improve.

I know failure to thrive happens for no reason sometimes but all three of the children I know who got it all had an underlying medical condition and it didn't turn around till it was addressed. I'm really sorry your friend is going through this. I know how horrid it is. I know how bad and scared she feels. I'd really suggest going to a nutritionist. That was where I got the best suggestions. Not shocking really but I feel without their help my son wouldn't be in the 5th percentile even that he is currently in.

Both my girls had bad reflux and my nephew was hospitalized because of burning to his throat, larynx, and voice box from reflux. As long as she takes things seriously and NEVER lays him flat he will get better and start to thrive. We had to use baby liquid Zantac With my girls as I found it had the least side effects. Prevacid made my daughter colicky. If she is away from home have her have him sleep in his carseat. My girls grew out of it when they started walking. This seems like a long time but the Nap Nanny thing is a godsend and will be her one thing she cannot live without. I remember the stress of having an infant with reflux when these other people had babies that were so easy around me. Give her a big hug from me too and tell her I promise it will get better!
