Baby Tooth Knocked Out

My 2 year old son fell this afternoon and knocked out one of his front teeth. Does anyone know if there is anything that can be done? I've heard you can put the tooth in milk and they can try to put it back in, but I've also heard that there is nothing that can be done and you have to just hope that his permanent tooth will come in normally in several years? Has this happened to anyone else?!

You do not need to put a baby tooth back in. the risk is in the space closing up and when the permanent tooth comes in there will be no room, also just for speech and general appearance. I would definitely bring him to a pediatric dentist for and evaluation. He may need a spacer.

Yes, I've heard about putting the tooth in cold milk too. Call a pediatric dentist right away to get him seen. They need to try to save it since that tooth isn't supposed to come out for another 3-4 years. Best wishes.

Here's a link to my pedi dentist's website information on what to do.

when you put it in milk your suppose to take him right away to the dentist. i do belive there are several options as far as a replacement tooth. a fake one that is semi permenate untill the other comes in. I have seen the show called Toddlers and Tirias. The kids with lost teeth use something called a flipper. Its like a retainer with fake teeth that go inplace once the peice is in. Looks great. sorry your little one had a bad fall!hope he is fine now.

Call your pedi dentist for the best advice. It happened to us and the permanent tooth grew back around age 5...we were worried but no problems...

It is important to take him to the dentist for xrays and an exam. Our daughter knocked her tooth loose, but not out. It discolored but we monitored it to make sure it wasn't infecting the permanant tooth above it with all the trauma. aparently as the new teeth absorb the roots of the old tooth there can be issues with damaged roots. we almost had to yank the dead tooth out, but it is absorbing fine and not affecting her new permanant tooth. If his permanant tooth is affected then you will have problems down the road. baby teeth are just for the first few years anyways.

If it was knocked out, you'll just have to wait for his 'big boy' teeth to come in. get his teeth checked out and monitor it. good luck.

good luck

My daughter knocked our her front tooth when she was three. I felt like a horrible mother, it was a silly thing to think because my baby girl was/is a monkey and she knocked it on monkey bars. Its just one of those things that sometimes happens. The dentist didn't try to put it back in, it was knocked out clean. The main thing was to monitor the gum area for abcess or infection--which never happened. When she was 6 her permanent tooth came in fine. This is usually the case. I know you hate that it happened, but he will look cute snaggle toothed. I am sure it will all be okay.

Hey! Same happened to my son. Dentist said the front is fine. Permanent will grow fine. If it was in the back, we'd be in trouble. He'll be fine. It makes for interesting stories and pictures.

I don't know anything about saving the tooth. But the son of some friends had several lost and rotten teeth due to bottle rot (his birth mom was into crack and didn't take care of him very well). Most of the front teeth were capped, but he lost the front 2 top teeth when he was only like 2 years old or so, they came in just fine when it was their time. Your son should be fine. But check with a dentist to be safe.

It depends on the dentist. Some will try to put it back and others will put in a crown as a placeholder.

I can't answer the baby tooth issue, but I can answer what to do when an adult tooth gets knocked out. Your choice is to put the tooth in milk or into the person's mouth under their tongue to hold it until you get to the dentist. Obviously, not for small children who might end up swallowing it. Apparently the root of the tooth when put back in the "hole" can be either accepted or absorbed over time and the tooth will eventually fall out. My 11 yo son just got very disappointing news yesterday that his root has started a fairly advanced reabsorption and he will most likely lose it sometime in a year to two years. He's suffered through 3 root canals trying to save the tooth. Such a trooper! Bottom line: popping it under the tongue of the tooth loser is just as good as putting it in milk, but if it's a small child that might swallow it--Milk.
