My grandson started teething at 2 months. Tylenol and ibuprofen really didn't help. He will chew on teething rings sometimes. The tablets (they bought them at Walmart) have worked wonders for him. Every child is different but this has worked for son and dil

Calley,
My mom would give us corn cobs that were cleared of the corn niblets. The cobs are perfect for holding, won't break and can be dipped in the water you cooked them in to keep them moist. Just remember: Don't salt the water! You can take a knife to them and 'shave' the niblets off. Try them warm or chilled.

Calley,

It sounds like teething to me. Frozen wash cloths work well, especially if they have been dipped in chamomille tea first as it helps reduce the baby's pain. I don't know about old fashioned, but two very safe natural remedies are Hyland's Teething Tablets (available at Walmart), and Dr Christopher's Kid-e-col. It's available online, and well worth ordering. It helps with both teething pain and "colic." I have used both with my three children with great success. I hope this helps, and that your son feels better soon.

Sounds like teething. Even if there are no teeth visible, he could be teething.

Try ice in a baby sock, a teething ring, a frozen washcloth (soak in clean water and freeze), and you can also try teething tablets.

Other problems that may be happening is he may be increasingly hungry (try feeding more/more often) or he may have gas (but gas drops should help).

Mine is 7 months now and within the last month has gotten 5 teeth. When he fusses, I use a frozen teething ring. They do make them for the freezer and when it thaws you clean it an put it back in. The other trick I use is a vibrating teether I got at Kroger. It is shaped like a yellow star and when it was the worse would calm him right down. At first I had to hold it for him but he has the hand of it now. I have also heard of using vanilla extract, but have never tried it. You can look it up as a home remedy for teething pain. Good luck.

Calley,

He very well could be teething! I'm not sure why your doctor said he wasn't, especially since he's "eating" his hands.

There are LOTS of things you can do to help with teething pain.
~I've heard of a frozen wash cloth
~Using a teether, but put in the fridge not the freezer, I know Target sells one that is kinda big, but quite inexpensive $.97
~They sell (in Target, I know for sure) these little bags on rings that you can put a banana in and put it in the freezer and then they can suck on that, but ONLY if you have given him food at this point and if he's had bananas and is not allergic.
~Google help for teething babies! They'll be TONS of things that will pop up.

I've been told by my pediatrician that baby Oragel (sp?) is not recommended, so don't try that.

I just googled a link for you:
http://www.thenewparentsguide.com/baby-teething.htm
it seems to have a lot of good information, TONS of stuff out there on the internet!

Good luck!

teething tabs, they sell them at wal-mart for 2 or 3 dollars. they are like baby valium!!! but they are all natural and very safe. they worked for both my kids wonderfully. if not teething, could he have gas??? that was another rpoblem that caused alot of crying for us. try a warm bath and rubbing his tummy.

At 6 months you can start giving Motrin which seemed to help my sons more than tylenol for teeth pain- especially at night.

You may want to rule out Thrush or maybe even hand foot and mouth. My son (also 6 mo) had a very mild case of thrush which made him very uncomfortable with lots of drooling that I took for teething- unrealated but happened to be followed one week later by Hand Foot and Mouth disease- and non-stop screaming. (of course he had a fever too).

I did not catch the Thrush since it was so mild and had not bothered my nipples (I am still nursing him) but he got much better after a few days on the Nystatin.

Good luck. Hopefully it is "just" teething!!

Sounds like pain of some sort but too extreme for teething to account for all of it. He should be throughly evaluated by a pediatrician to rule out something serious.

If he is having painful teething Motrin is the safest and most effective way to control the pain. Continuous unmanaged pain can disrupt his development.

I took large bagels, cut them into quarters, and froze them. When my child was teething, I'd pull out a hunk and give it to him to gnaw. Whatever he managed to scrape off was mushy, so I didn't have to worry about a choking hazard. I also dosed him with infant Tylenol and Baby Nighttime Oragel. Good luck!

Your docotor just might be wrong. My son started teething at 4 months. The doctor said too early and the next week after the appt. his first tooth broke through. I never tried the wash cloth, but you can get some great soft teethers that have water in them that are shapped like dragon flys etc. and get that cold and it helps. We used baby oragel and I've had friends get the tablets from the health food store that is for teething that said it helps. Hope someone else has more ideas for you. If you think he is teething you are probably correct. I'm no expert, since I only have one, but I knew mine was teething and was right. Good Luck!

I'm not sure why the doc would say no- it's absolutely possible he is teething at this age. Did the dr say what else it COULD be? That just doesn't sound very helpful.

My son never chewed on anything- I don't know why. He would be completely miserable but wouldn't chew. A friend of mine would give her daughter a leather strap that someone had given her who worked with leather. It was really long and large enough not to be a choking hazard and it wasn't dyed or treated with anything, and she swore by it. My mom swears by the cold or frozen washcloth. I can't vouch for anything personally.

One thing my dr told me was that the Orajel stuff will actually make their gums tougher and thicker if you use it a lot, so teething is actually more difficult and takes longer. I just wanted to warn you about that.

As for the Melaleuca Oil, I love that stuff. But NO WAY would I have put it in my baby's mouth. It isn't meant to be swallowed, and it is really strong tasting. I have gargled with it when I had a really bad sore throat and it almost made me throw up, and that was like 2 drops in a cup full of water. Always ask your doctor before you give your baby anything, natural or not. Lots of things are natural, but if you aren't a hundred percent sure of what they are supposed to be used for or how safe they are, you shouldn't give them to an infant.

frozen apple slices or pear slices are good. Make sure there are no seeds or anything. I also got my son these things from Target called "mesh feeders" and it looks like a giant pacifier but instead of a rubber nipple, it has a little mesh bag. You can open the top and put frozen fruits or veggies in there and its awesome because it's numbing for teething plus they get the nutrients of the food without any small peices to choke on. Frozen bagles are good too

we tried a lot of "home" methods like the frozen washcloth, frozen waffles and frozen bagels, teething rings you put in the frige (she liked those a bit) - when she was in pain they really didn't help because she refused their coldness. She liked chewing on the "Soothie" pacifiers - the 3 months plus ones - they're hard but not too hard. She doesn't like to suck on pacifiers so she chewed them. To be honest, the best for her was tylenol or motrin. If she's really cranky and gnawing and especially when the tooth is just breaking through we give infant tylenol during the day and motrin just before bed. We find tylenol works faster but motrin lasts longer. Baby oregel that you swab on can work wonders in seconds, but the effects aren't long lasting. The homeopathic teething tablets did nothing for her. The sad truth about teething is, it's ongoing for about three years. The molars were the worst for my daughter but the early teeth weren't too bad once they broke through. It's the breaking through that hurts the most! at 6 months, your son could definitely be teething. I got my first tooth at 5 months and a friend of mine has a 6 month old with 3 teeth already! You won't know till you see swollen gums and that little greyish tranparent tip breaking through. They don't look white until they've broken all the way through. Good luck!

I would say yes, he is probably teething, especially if he never behaves like this. I have taken damp baby washcloths and frozen them and my older daughter loved to suck on them hen she was teething. My younger daughter who is just now getting her top front teeth, not so much. For her, adult-strength orajel was all that seemed to help, and even then, she just wasn't herself for over a week, + fever and diarhea and pulling at her ears. Then, poof, yesterday she cut that first top front tooth!

Just find what works for him, and be patient, he is in pain and can't help it. Hope this helps!

Hyland's Teething Tablets!

They are a homeopathic remedy, they dissolve quickly in baby's mouth. They are about $5 for a pack (that lasted me through 2 kids & a neighbor)

I have seen them at Target & Wal Mart, if not, your local health food store will have them. Here is a link:

Good luck!
