Baby Swimming Class?

Hi all,
We'd really like to get our 8 month old in the water for baby swim classes. We live on the North side and would prefer something nearby public transportation (the EL, if possible). Any ideas? I've looked up the Y, but can't seem to find infant classes, and I can't quite understand the other myriad links on google. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

The Y on Ashland and Belmont is semi-near public transportation and has youth swimming.

http://www.lakeviewymca.org/proAquatics.html

If you go to ymcachgo.org and click on branch locations, it'll bring up all of the YMCAs in the Chicagoland area and a lot of them have their program brochure pdfs there. Youth Swim Only and Gym and Swim are listed under Aquatics.

I also have friends who belong to the Galter LifeCenter up near Lincoln Square. I know the brown line runs up there, but not sure how close it is to that. They have an aquababies program. You can call and find out more about the program but this is what is up on the site:

Aquababies helps parents better understand how to expose children to the water in a healthy environment. The Galter LifeCenter's certified instructors and warm water environment (typically 90 to 92 degrees) are ideal for babies to become comfortable with the water. 8-week course. Fee: M $40, NM $60. Feb. 7-Apr. 14: Weekdays & Weekends (no class Mar. 7 thru Mar. 17)

Wednesdays, 3-3:30 pm, 6 mos.-4 yrs.
Saturdays, 7:45-8:15 am, 2-4 yrs.
Saturdays, 8:15-8:45 am, 6 mos.-2 yrs.
Saturdays, 11:30 am-noon, 2-4 yrs.
Saturdays, noon-12:30 pm, 6 mos.-2 yrs

Their site is: http://www.galterlifecenter.org

If you Google Chicago Park District, you can find their website (not sure exactly what it is) but they offer swim classes at many parks for all ages. The key, however, is to register as soon as open registration begins. They fill up very fast! Not sure how close you are to Wright College (Montrose & Narragansett) but they also offer classes for infants and I believe they start in February. The park district is probably already full for this session. Good luck.

Some of the YMCA's offer parent tot swimming classes (my kids take at the Leaning Tower Y in Niles). The ymcachgo.org website can be a bit difficult to manuever through. I suggest calling the Y you are interested in directly and getting info from there.

Many park districts also offer swimming.
Good luck!

Welcome to Chicago M.!

Well since you live up north, there are some park districts on the north-west side of town that offer swim classes for you, your son and even for the whole family! Check out the website chicagoparkdistrict.com for more details about which park district offers the classes and when. And the prices are inexpensive, unlike the YMCA.

Take care and I wish you and your family the best!

Dear M.,

the Lakeview YMCA has infant/toddler classes.
http://lakeviewymca.org/

or the chicago park districts offer lots of options at many locations.
http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/

those are the only options that I know of. I'm taking my 21month old to a swim class beginning monday at Portage Park. I think you've probably missed the registration deadlines for winter, but you should be able to get into something for spring.

auf wiedersehen,

C.

The Y in Oak Park offers parent and infant (as young as 6 months) swimming classes. Although it is outside of the city, it is still located within blocks of the Green line el.

Have you tried Lakeshore Athletic club on Fullerton Ave? They are reasonably close to the el and have lots of baby and tot swim classes. You have to pay more for classes if you are not a member but you don't have to join. Phone number is ###-###-####. I don't recall the web site offhand but it is the Lincoln Park location.

The New City Y near the Clybourn Red Line stop has infant classes starting at 6 months. Each class is $50 (Y members) or $100 (non-members), although I think they are running a new year's special. Our 9 month old starts lessons next week and they have both weekday and weekend classes.
