Baby Sling for Breastfeeding

Hi moms! I was hoping for some recommendations for a good sling/infant carrier that I could maybe even use to breastfeed as well. I am expecting my second child and am wondering if it's possible to be a little more mobile while breastfeeding. Are there slings that work well and allow your hands to be somewhat free and are comfortable for you and the baby while of course being private in case I am in public? How easy is it to get the hang of feeding this way? With my first I just used the baby bjorn to carry the baby and while breastfeeding he would take nearly an hour to feed. Can't imagine I'll have that kind of time to sit with my 2 year old to look after too!

I have a NoJo padded ring sling, non-structured wrap, baby bjorn and an ergo. The NoJo and Wrap were probably the easiest to breastfeed a newborn in, for a larger baby - the ergo.

Some good articles:

You really do need to try a few and see which feels best to you. A lot of times you can find them for a good deal at a second hand children's shop.

Good luck. My baby girl lived in her sling the first year, and we went everywhere. Enjoy!

I would look into a wombfruit baby wrap. I know several of my friends who have worn these and nursed at the same time. I have one, but my daughter is only 2 weeks old, so we are still getting used to nursing on the couch!! They do take some practice putting on, but are wonderful when you get the hang of it. I'm not sure of the website, but if you google wombfruit baby wraps I'm sure you'll find them. Good luck!!

Hands down the Ergo is the way to go. You will love your mobility and its ease of use. It's pricey but so very worth every penny. You can see video of it on their website. You might find a good deal on eBay too. I don't recommend the backpack attachment as the extra weight was too much for me and my friend who has an Ergo too. Good Luck and Congratulations!

I've been a sling-wearing, breastfeeding mama through 4 babies and have used a variety of slings. With my 4th I used a NewNative sling. I liked it because it was quick to put on and it folded up very compact so I could stuff it in my purse. It was also easy to use while nursing. However, If I was going to be wearing the baby for a longer period of time I would use my Moby wrap. The New Native and ring slings put all the weight on one shoulder, so after a while it aches. The Moby sistributed it much better and was very comfortable, but it was more difficult to put on and off and was bulkier.

I used (and still use with a 19 month old!) a ring sling. They're adjustable for any size person, and you can usually find them with a pocket on the tail that is convenient for keys, wallet, phone, etc. You can also use the tail as a nursing cover for more privacy. I also know people who love wraps (a long piece of fabric wrapped and tied around the body). I'm not sure how it is to use one for nursing though. I know it can be done, but now sure how easy or comfortable. I would suggest trying to find some that you could borrow once baby is born, so you can try them out before deciding, as they can be pricey. Or you can always make your own! Check out thebabywearer.com and they have a link for directions. Good luck!

I used the Over the Shoulder Baby Holder (http://www.babyholder.com/) and nursed all the time. There's lots of fabric so you can conceal yourself from indecency.

I made a Maya Wrap type rin sling and used it with both my girls. Very easy to make, even if you don't have much experience with a sewing machine. You can find a free pattern and order the slings from this website: http://www.slingrings.com/ Make sure you use high quality rings, not the kind you find in craft stores. The one sling I made lasted through 2 kids and I just sold it in a consignment sale (we're done with kids) and it still has plenty of wear left. I always make one for new mommies as part of their gift. The retail around 50 or so, but I made mine for less then 10.

I have the Maya Wrap and it works really well (once you get the hang of it) for carrying the baby around even while breastfeeding. I still have to use one arm under the wrap to help support the baby, but you don't have all the weight on your arm so that definitely helps. I also have a two year old and it gives me a free hand and cradles the baby so she's not flopping all around while doing stuff with my two year old. Only problem is the one I have is a very heavy material so it can get hot in the Summer. Not sure if they have lighter fabric because mine was a gift, but I would definitely recommend buying one made with lighter material if that's an option. Good luck and congrats! The world of more than one kids is very exciting (never boring). :-)

I saw your message and wanted to let you know this is a great idea and I successfully used baby slings for my baby and breastfeeding. I also used nursing tops, dresses to help make this work well no matter where I was at... even at church. I initially used a store bought sling, but then I made my own. The kind with the rings are the ones that are adjustable and can grow with your baby, or say you lose weight, you can tighten it up.

If you would like, you can check out the slings I have at http://www.balterbaby.com. The Tickle Turdle would work great for breastfeeding while carrying baby. Thanks,
