Baby Not Sleeping Well

My 8-month old is having trouble sleeping at night due to mucuous build up. It stops his breathing. He just gets mad and wakes up. The doctor has told us to try a humidifier, but I don't know if we got the right one. It is a cool mist humidifier that takes water only. Should I be looking for something else? There are so many out there, cool vs. warm mist, etc... Please help.

What can I do next?

My son's doctor gave him allergy meds. I don't know exactly what it was called but it was for babies and it seemed to help. When he was old enough she gave him Zyrtec(2yrs is what their website says). Although I found this on Wedmd, "Choices are more limited for younger children. The best choice is usually Zyrtec, which is available as a syrup and is approved for children over age 6 months." (Vincent Iannelli, M.D.)

Hi R.. My 4 month old often gets mucus build up and we use saline drops. We make them at home and give them to him right before we feed him and put him to bed. They really help get rid of the mucus by breaking it up and he either sneezes it out or swallows it with his food.
We mix 1 cup water with 1/8 teaspoon of salt. We use a medicine dropper and shoot about 3 or 4 drops into each nostril.
I hope this helps!

I think I would get another opinion. The baby may need medication. When my children were that congested the doctor gave them an antibiotic to help clear it up so it wouldn't go into pneumonia. I also used a suction to get the mucus out of the nose so the baby could rest better. I think the plug in vapors by Vicks is good, too. I sure would keep a close eye on the baby. God bless you.

Hey R.,
I just wanted to write & let you know, that what one of the other moms suggested is a great idea.
That sudacare (I think that what it is called) but it plugs in teh wall & puts the vapors in the air. That thing was a life saver for me. When I kept my friends daughter, both hers & my daughter always seemed to have colds at the same time, probably from them sleeping together alot, But anyway, she bought that & gave it to me since I had her daughter the majority of the time, & it helped them sooo muuch .
It is basically this lil thing that you get these pads for it that you just insert in & plug into the wall. The vapors last for 8 hours. After that you unplug it. The vaporss linger @ for a little while. But they work.
I just thought that i would let you know about those.
I recommend them alot b/c they work (At least for me they did)
Take care,
Jill

We use the cool mist in my house, makes sure no burns, just takes water. We also use this thing from vicks that puts the vapors in the air, you plug it into an outlet and put this little strip in it and the whole room smells like vicks. I dont know if it says anything about children under 1, so double check, but I really like it. God Bless

Well I don't know anything about humidifiers, but it seems to me that once warm mist reaches your child it will be cool anyway. I don't really see the difference other than the cool one seems safer in case something happens. Anyway I do know about Vicks. They make Vicks for baby's now. Just put a little on his pajamas while he is sleeping or you could use saline nose drops. (Make sure they aren't medicated) My daughter hated it when I put them in her nose but she got over it fast and always slept better. Good luck hope it helps.

Cool mist is usually best as long as the proper care is taken to maintain it as directed in the instructions to prevent growth of things you do not want spread. Some babies however, may do better with warm moisture. Try it and see what happens or if it makes a difference. You can also buy a plug in thing for the vapors (I think it is Vicks) in a child's version. Since it does not come in contact with the child directly it should be okay. Of course, I personally believe that vicks on the chest is always best but that is between you and your pedi.

Don't despair, this will pass, to make room for the next cold.

The humidifier is a great idea. Cool mist is typically used for babies because they can get burned on the steam/pull it off of a dresser and burn themselves. You do have to be careful to clean/change the filter as often as recommended so that no mold can grow (one of the drawbacks of the cool mist version). You can also try using saline nose drops often (ocean spray or ayr are 2 good ones). This will not only keep the mucous loosened, but will help wash away the virus/germs that are causing the mucous. You can also raise one side of the crib to elevate his head while he sleeps. Other than that, you just have to wait it out. The good news is that they outgrow getting so many colds, the bad news that it is common for babies/young kids to get 8-12 colds per year, so it seems like they always have one. This too shall pass though.

Hi. I am a 34-year old mom for the first time. My son, Devon, is 1 year and 4 days old. It seem like the first year he was always conjested. Try letting him sleep in his car seat in the middle of the bed with you and your husband. That way is stays proped up and the mucuous is not building up. Also I used a vaporizer with the vicks vapor liquid. He really seem to help. My doctor also recommended just using distilled water in the vaporizer. Good luck. Hope this helps

So the doctors told me to put saline solution up his nose and suck out and it helps ALOT! I didn't want to do it at all so I never did it til he got whooping cough and was in the hosptial for 3 days after that I started doing it. It helps so much. Its hard to do it though!!

Hopefully the mucus and stoppage is temporary. If it happens alot perhaps you should ask for a referral to an allergist.

I know it sounds weird but that mucus can do more than make him wake up, it can drain into his ears and give him infections and drain into his stomach and cause all sorts of issues with digestion and nasuea. If your baby has allergies or sinus issues its better to get it treated right away, there are lots of allergy medicines safe for infants now days.

A cool mist humidifier is what my ped. told us to use when my daugther was congested. So, I would think that should be the same one you should be using as well. Honestly, I could never tell that the humidifier was doing any good.

Good Luck!

I don't really know anything about humidifiers, but when my son gets congested I roll up a blanket and put it under his crib mattress on the side where he puts his head so that he is on an inclines and the mucus can kind of run out. The saline drops and suckers that the other moms suggested work great to.
